I think this is a fairly hot deal, but it takes a little work.

The laptop is a Compaq Presario 1722. It's not one of those cheap 700 series with the rounded edges.. this one looks just like the 2800 series, and has pretty good reviews.

Edit Updated Specs (Staples has it wrong!):

512KB L2 On-Chip Cache Memory
256 MB 133 MHz SyncDRAM upgradeable to 1GB
Hard Drive 20.0 GB hard drive
DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive (Hot swappable, FutureBay) Drive speeds of 4X CDR, 4X CD-RW, 6X DVD-ROM, 24X CD-ROM

Here's what you do. Call Staples, 1-800-3STAPLE, and tell them you want to pricematch item #479641. (link)

You're going to pricematch it with Outpost.com, item #3217041.

Here's the tricky part--you cannot get to the Outpost listing by navigating the site or searching for the laptop name/item number. The only way to get to it is to type in the URL. So when you call, make sure you cell the CSR this URL:

http://shop3.outpost.com/product/3217041/

They should be able to get to it. If Staples gives you a hard time, hang up and call back. The systems from both retailers are the same preconfigured models made by Compaq for distribution in the US. Eventually the pricematch should work. Keep trying! (This worked for me the first time, though I tried it before this post).

Here's the math:

Staples ($1699.98) - Outpost ($1149.90) = 550.08. 550.08 x 110% pricematch = $605.09

$1699.98 - $605.09 = $1094.89 sub-total.

EDIT! Even hotter! There's a $100 rebate on this system if you purchase by June 29th (Saturday). link

1094.89 - $100 = $994.89 sub-total!

Your final cost will vary depending on shipping & tax. Mine came out to be $1179.20; your mileage will vary.

N.B. Outpost is currently offering free shipping on all orders >$500. Mention this to the CSR, and they should give you free ground shipping as well. There's a link for this off www.outpost.com if the CSR doesn't believe you.

Good Luck.

I don't think these are identical, but hey, the price match may still work...

outposts lists a XGA display and Staples a SXGA+ (as i said before) and also outpost mentions a mobility radeon with 8 megs of video memory and staples doesn't mention the graphics chip, just that it has 32 megs of video ram...

someone look it up on compaq's website, i'm too lazy

CSR just told me this was a built-to-order and won't allow me to order it. I challenged it saying if it's built -to- order then I can customize it right? After a pause and consultation, reason #2 came. Outpost's model is a 1722 and Staples is a 1722US - different part num,ber therefore no price match. On further reflection it may be cheaper for me to go Outpost as I'll save in sales tax (NC).

If you do order from Staples don't forget the $100 rebate available here - good for purchases thru 29 June 2002!!!!!!!

Just checked Compaq website - there is no 1722 - just 1722US therefore Outpost is probably a 1722US - just left off the US on there web site. The good news is that the $10-0 rebate applies !!!!

I just ordered from Outpost - total $1,172.87 with overnight to NC so I can submit the rebate online ASAP (as I can't find a printed version)! I hope it all pans out as I was looking for a lappy for daughter's college so she can play all those MP3s.

I saw at CompUSA that they had a Sony Vaio Athlon XP 1500+ for $1499 AR.

is this the same, better as the compaq?

it has:

256mb
30 gig
14.1" screen
DVD/CDRW

are XP 1500+ comparable to P4 1.6? 1.4? Piii?

One question though...

Haven't these laptops been cancelled by Compaq? I don't believe Outpost still has them in stock...

I don't get it. Isn't this deal pretty hot? < $1000 for a laptop with those specs?

Geez... if only I had a reason to buy a laptop, I would buy it.

For me buying this lappy at Outpost would've been hot. It would've come out to just under $1050 delievered with three months same as cash financing. The only realistic thing that could've made this deal sweeter would've been a SXGA screen.

It's too bad we noticed it too late.
