What's the rest of your system like?

Doom iii DOES support the 8500 . . . i think it will be (quite) 'playable' as long as you have the minimum 1/5Ghz CPU/384MB (min) RAM (win2k/xp) . . .

you might also consider O/Cing your 8500.

For a noticeable UPgrade - a (~$150) 9700Pro will give most a very satisfactory Diii experience with more eye-candy.

prersonally, i would UPgrade for whatever new games are coming out . . . not necessarily Doomiii.

OR you can wait for the Doom Demo and decide what to do THEN.

It does seem weird at first, not being able to hold both at the same time, but I actually think this was a good choice. I'm more scared when I enter a dark room and I can't have my gun ready while I look to see what's there. For me it adds to the danger and the excitement. A hands-free light would limit their ability to use darkness to make the game spookier and more challenging.

That said, I agree that so far the gameplay is fairly repetetive. We'll see if it gets more interesting as the game moves along, as some here have suggested it does.

Didn't romero split to make daikatana what is probably the biggest flop in human history(even bigger then Alexanders last words)... I don't think it's valid to say he left cause he thought another doom sequel would suck(and imply this foreshadows it's failure).

Thank you John Carmack.

For making Nvidia look good.

Errr, mostly I just like to play Doom3 and I would play it on whatever ran it best. I would have bought a S3 Savage 2000 chipset to play this game.

I've been waiting for it for four years.

I had pretty much given up on single player for years now, this is the first game in I don't know how long that I will play through.

It's that good.

In the timedemo benchmark I scored ~29FPS, but that is a very intense portion of the game. You can buy a refurbished 9700PRO for around $130; that would be my choice in that price range ATM. If you have ~$285, you can get a 6800NU which would double the 9700PRO's performance in Doom3.

i concur. the 9700pro has been a pleasant surprise in Doom3. I'm so proud of it like a daddy.

Yep, its getting on my nerve.

I was expecting it to have flashlight on all the time like farcry or the thing.

I don't care for flashlight as soon as I find that plasma gun.

I haven't decided whether I like Doom 3 yet, but a game no one's mentioned that beats it all to heck in terms of ability to frighten is The Suffering. No joke it's a great roleplaying/FPS/survival horror game, as scary as some of the best scary games ever--Resident Evil, Realms of the Haunting, Alone in the Dark (and sure SS2 but that seemed more tense than just scary). The Suffering is really freaky and scary!

Do your own research; google the reviews, then go play it. It's terrific!

let me "share" what has "killed" the Diii experience for me

I don't bother to tiptop into a new room . . .

just 'save' b4 each new area, walk right in - withOUT hesitation - and get killed or badly injured but figure out where the monsters will spawn and where your weapons and armor are . . . reload and then you know EXACTLY what to do . . .

Rinse and repeat (till you are sick of it)

Just like a horror movie that relies on the SAME music, SAME shock - becomes same boring repetition that needs more and more gore to be "interesting". . . .

Doom III is SURE pretty - but lacking in game play; it is a GOOD game, just not a Great game (IMO)

Pffft. So you basically circumvent the actual point of the game, to be surprised by the monsters and have to deal with them on the fly, and then come here and say the game is bad because it let's you do this?

What games are there that are not scripted that you find so much better? I'm thinking you can do this with most games?
(at least if you're dumb enough to pay money for something and then cheat yourself out of the experience?)

The game is absolutely incredible on all accounts. I am still terrified every time I turn a new corner or the lights go completely out on me.

In my opinion, never before has a game been this immersive. The lighting and sounds are amazing, and it litertally has the ability to scare the life out of anyone playing it in a dark room with a good pair of headphones on.

i think the most predictable (and silly) part is that if a monster jumps in front of you, one will also be sure to jump in behind you, even it must jump in out of pure thin air.

just saw some new HL2 screenies from IGN. honestly, the character models are eons behind Doom 3's.
some new hl2

My "slowest" Doom3 machine uses a 9700Pro. Played the game for about an hour last night on it. At 1024x768 with Medium settings, the game looked great and ran really smooth. I really don't think 9700Pro owners are missing out on anything.

Regarding the game itself, I have to admit I was not really as impressed as I would have liked to be. From a FPS gaming standpoint, it's really nothing that hasn't been done before and the story (thus far in game for me) is about the same level of quality as several other shooters I've tried over the years.

Sure, it's scary, but not scary enough. The annoyances with the flashlight doesn't help either. The game can be TOO dark at times. I understand that the darkness is suppose to add to the atmosphere, but it get's really frustrating at times and makes me more mad than scared. I pay a lot of money for the hardware to run this game and I would like to actually SEE some of the graphics instead of fleeting glimpses of it.

Regarding the graphics engine itself, I think Id did an absolutely fantastic job. Very scalable with existing hardware and is very robust in features. They're going to sell a lot developer licenses in the years to come.

When a game with this much hype comes out, people will tend to be dissapointed. Reviewers are people, they are just as dumb and emotional as anyone else, the only difference is they get to tell everyone all about it.

Personally, I never read reviews. Just play the game. Who cares if someone else doesnt like it. Not everyone likes cheese either. I love cheese, and grape flavored soda. If a review comes out about how much cheese and grape flavored Soda suck, I'm not going to stop liking them. My point is that entertainment is just like food, it's totally subjective. I could care less if one of the retards at gamespot like or dislike a game. I only care if I like it, and so should you.

I'm almost done with the game, and it has been great, but I would have liked it more if they cut out some of the more unnecessary fighting. Some people like that, and use id uses the excuse that they are staying true to the original, but IMO all that means is that the gameplay is many years old. The parts I have liked the best were those where the story really takes hold... I even enjoyed exploring the information in the PDA's I picked up. There have been a few times when I've fealt almost like I'm playing just to get to these parts, and just to get the repititious parts done with. Overall, I can't regret getting the game.
