My Asus P3V4X still won't operate my Intel camera or print with my new 930c H.P. printers usb connection. (stuck using parallel port) Slikkster and I tried to fix this a of couple weeks ago but I don't think God himself can fix this one. Just a feeling I'm getting.
I thought since both items were brand new it couldn't be them and fortunately I was right as they work perfect on other machines. Is there any way to tell if the usb on my mobo is bad? Could this be a windows issue? I e-mailed Atacom for some tech support since this mobo is only a couple months old but they haven't replied yet. They don't seem to answer the phone these days. Any ideas?

Good question, what type of motherboard? Did you check in system properties and see if you had any flagged USB devices?

The wave device on the sblive was flagged and also there seemed to be an IRQ conflict but both were fixed by Slikkster. Could the sound card have anything to do with anything? I know when I put this card in the bsod was present constantly until I downloaded the latest drivers from creative labs.

Sounds like a USB problem, especially since 2 different devices wont work on them. And if you want to see if the sound card is the problem, take it out, try plugging in your USB devices in (while computer is on), if nothing happens its more than likely something wrong with the USB ports.

Try installinf usb108 (available from the Asus site) This worked for me. My first USB port wasn't working properly.

Thanx for replying all especially Slikkster. I know this must be getting kind of old but I really don't know what else to do. I've just started downloading file you recommended.

No luck. Program freezes still when you try to use camera.
This might sound weird but I just installed the software on my nephews 2 year old laptop and as it was installing I noticed different boxes popping up that I did not see or remember as it was loading on mine. Also, on initial set-up after program installed, the prompt to sign on the internet that came first when setting up on the laptop never even was an option that was asked of me on my computers install. What gives?

Well, from what you just told me, I'd uninstall the camera software and reinstall it. See if anything's different. Have you tried using a registry cleaner, like Norton Windoctor or Cleansweep or the freebie "Regclean" from Microsoft? You could have a lingering problemo there. But if the printer isn't working on USB either then the problem would seem to be USB-related only. Still, after you've made these patches/downloads from Via and Microsoft, it might be a good idea to uninstall/reinstall both the Printer and the Camera software and see if it helps.

Here's Regclean's link:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/win98SE/Utility/4.1a/W9XNT4/EN-US/REGCLEAN.EXE

Run Regclean at least twice. Let it fix anything it wants, as it will create an Undo file if you ever need to restore something.

One thing that you might try is, go to the "Boot Menu" in the BIOS an look at the line "Plug & Play O/S". If this line is set at "NO", then change it to "Yes", and if is "YES", then set it to "NO". I don't know why, but sometimes this procedure helps with these types of problems on the P3V4X. I had similar problems and this cleared up the problem!!!! Hope this helps!!!!!

Tried all suggestions. Nothing so far. I'm tempted to uninstall windows and start over but I won't yet until absolutely all avenues have been explored. What's the easiest way to do this if I do decide to do this?

Hey Fitzm,

I went to the http://www.usbman.com webpage were it's noted that there are many reported problems with VIA and USB. There's a specific page for VIA tips. Some of these you have already tried.
There are a couple of others, too. The page (so you can follow along)
is http://www.usbman.com/Guides/VIA%20USB%20Tips%20and%20Tricks.htm

Edit: I would pay particular attention to the following areas: Installing the "Bridge Driver", installing the registry patch for ACPI, AND doing the Device Manager settings tip on the USB Host Controller.

Your final solution might involve getting a USB add-on card as mentioned in the tips section on that webpage. Good luck...

Slikkster, when I initialized this link - http://www.usbman.com/WebDrivers/VIA%20Drivers/VIA%20INF%20File%205-16-2000/viainf.exe - from that USBMan site it asked me in a DOS screen that popped up if I wanted to open/install .ini files and I typed in Y for all prompts. Well, when I re-installed the camera software just now the program froze after "bar graph" said %100 in the miniature window that says: "configuring .ini file entries". What did I do wrong?

That file you downloaded and extracted doesn't do anything until you run "setup.exe" from it. When you run "viainf.exe" (the file you downloaded) you answer "Y" to the prompts, as you did. What happens is it creates another folder called "Disk1", and inside that folder is "setup.exe". So, depending upon where you downloaded it to, look for "Disk1", then, click on that and doubleclick on "setup.exe" to install it. After installing, reboot.

I would still go back and concentrate on the other things I mentioned in my last post:

Installing the "Bridge Driver", installing the registry patch for ACPI, AND doing the Device Manager settings tip on the USB Host Controller all located on the http://www.usbman.com/Guides/VIA%20USB%20Tips%20and%20Tricks.htm webpage.

At this stage I really am out of ideas. Asus/or the place you bought this from needs to remedy this for you, because it's obvious that USB just isn't working right on this board. I'd call/email them and let them know that you've tried all the patches/tips, etc., but NO USB device will work for you. They should be fixing this at this point.

Slikkster, thank you so much for all your help. I realize that the information you provided me took a good amount of research and I really do appreciate that. This is the first and only issue I have encountered with this mobo. I heard so many good things about Asus I figured I couldn't go wrong. Wrong! I know this is a newer mobo so I'm wondering if this is just a matter of getting the bugs out of a new mobo or what.
How do I prove to Asus or Atacom that the USB is really screwed up without going through all the hassle we have gone through trying to resolve this issue?

fitzm: Since you tried installing on another 'puter and were successful, this could be a problem with your cd-rom. First thing I would check is that the cd-rom does NOT have dma enabled. A friend of mine went thru hell on some game reinstalls until he turned off his dma. Just a thought-good luck.

That's an interesting take (CDROM), and worth pursuing, if possible. I'd try anything now, at this stage. If you don't have another cdrom to try, then maybe instead of installing from CD, you make a folder on your hard drive and copy the Cd's contents over to the drive. You should be able to compare file sizes of the identical files on cd and the hard drive after copying. Then, run setup from there...

The last thing I thought of after telling you I didn't have any other ideas involves going to the registry and doing a little deletion. If you're willing to try that (export the key in the registry first so you have a backup, but it's an Enumeration key, which should simply redetect on reboot.

What I want you to do, essentially, is delete the entry in the registry that shows your USB device is installed. Again, this is the type of registry key that will automatically be reinserted when plug and play detects your USB controller.

Open Regedit.

Go to this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\USB

Now, delete ANY subfolder underneath the USB entry. For instance, my entry reads like this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\USB\ROOT_HUB\PCI&VEN_8086&DEV_7112&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_01&BUS_00&DEV_07&FUNC_02

For me, then, I would delete the ROOT_HUB folder, which, since it is both a parent and a child folder, would automatically delete it's child subfolder labled "PCI&VEN_blahblahblah" Comprendo? All you want to see left after the deletion is the main USB folder, and it's only entry should say:

"(Default) (value not set)" There should be no subfolders of USB there.

OK, now after you've made the deletion, close Regedit, then shutdown and reboot the pc to Windows.

Windows should redect your USB controller. This might stimulate a working condition for you. Once it is redetected and all, try the devices again (camera and printer). If no go, reinstall the camera/printer software and try again.

Everything re-loaded as you said but the program just freezes after the "modem test". The last few times I was troubleshooting and loading and reloading the software, the icons on the desktop for the camera wouldn't open. Pressing ctrl alt del shows the program running in the background and the last couple of times I tried to uninstall I couldn't until I restarted the computer. Even after only systray and explorer were the only two things listed.

I just edited this message because I found something quite interesting in the newsgroups. It appears that the USB Filter Driver you downloaded from VIA does NOT install correctly. You can verify this yourself by doing a search of your hard drive for the file:

"viausb.sys"

Apparently, the install program seems like it's working ok, but actually doesn't install anything at all, so you think you've installed the viausb.sys driver update, but nothing has happened.

If yours installed correctly, it should be in your
"c:\windows\system32\drivers" folder. If it's not there, you have to install this thing manually. Here's what I would do.

If you don't still have this file, download it again at:

http://www.viatech.com/drivers/usbf108.exe

This is the USB Filter Driver 1.08.

Now, extract all the files to a folder on your hard drive...I'd make a temporary folder to do this and copy the usbf108.exe to it, then click on it to extract all the files. Once the files are extracted, you'll see that it's created 2 subfolders, one labled Win2K and one labled Win98.

Click on the Win98 subfolder. You'll see one file: viausb.sys

Now, get a clean diskette. Copy Viausb.sys from the Win98 subfolder to the diskette. Cool so far?

Ok, now, open up Device Manager in Windows98.
Go down to the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" section. Doubleclick on "USB Root Hub". Click on "Driver". Then, click on "Update Driver". Click "Next". Now, you have two choices...You want to choose the one that says "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location..." Now, click on the button that says "Have Disk". Make sure the diskette is in the A: drive now. Install the viausb.sys driver from the diskette. Reboot...try your devices again.

Slikkster, there is absolutely no file whatsoever in the "Win98" subfolder. There is a read only file in the "Win2k" subfolder though, weird. This is it's contents:

I have a feeling you're not seeing the viausb.sys file because you don't have Windows Explorer set to view all files. Open up Windows Explorer. (Not Internet Explorer...Windows Explorer!)

Click on "View" on the toolbar at the top. Then click on "Folder Options" on the menu that appears. Then, click on the "View" tab (the middle tab of the 3 tabs labeled General, View, and File Types.

Now, when you're in the View section, make the following selections:

PUT A CHECKMARK NEXT TO THE FOLLOWING:

"Allow all Uppercase Names"
"Display Full Path in Title Bar"

Under "Hidden Files" CLICK the circle that says "Show All Files"

UNCHECK "Hide File Extensions for Known File Types.

CHECK "Remember each Folder's view settings"

CHECK "Show popup description for folder and desktop items".

Now, after you've done this, click "Apply" on the bottom. Now, go back to my previous post and follow all the directions again. I downloaded and extracted that file so I know it's there in the Win98 subfolder. You just can't see it yet.
