Got a new problem, but I'll post it at the bottom because some guy referenced this thread so I'll keep it intact

Alright, need a little help here from you smart ATers. I just set up my computer, didn't put anything in except the motherboard, cpu + HSF, RAM, and vid card, and it doesn't work when I flip on the power supply. No fans spin or anything. The light does turn green on my motherboard though.

Specs:

A7N8X Deluxe
T-Bred 2400+ w/Swiftech mcx462+ and panaflo L1A
Corsair XMS 2700LL
Radeon 8500LE 128 mb
Antec Performance Plus 1080 w/TruePower 430w

Stuff I haven't put in yet:

Seagate Barracuda ATA V 120 gb
Generic CD + Floppy
Mouse, Keyboard, etc.

When I was building it, my panaflo fan only has two pins, so I whittled off one of the plastic prongs so I could fit it onto the 3 pin socket on the motherboard. Also, I may not have installed the heatsink correctly, but should only be a slight chance. The power supply doesn't even spin up, no fans go on, all I get is this taunting green light.

Somebody, anybody, please help.

Try firing it up with the Panaflo unplugged for a moment and report back whether that helps. Also, if you have your case's front-outlet wiring plugged in, unplug that for the moment too. Also, you're going to need to do more than flip on the PSU to start the system... got to hook up your Power Button wire to the motherboard and push the case's power button, of course.

Well the Panaflo's kind of on the heatsink, will it hurt my processor to run without the fan?
I'll try as soon as I find out, don't want to hurt anything else. No, haven't plugged in any front wiring, just what I said in the OP.

You don't want to run it for long without a fan, nope. From a cold start, you should have 30 seconds before a heatsink of that weight starts getting anywhere beyond a reasonable level. All I'm suggesting is unplugging the fan, pushing the case's power button (assuming it's hooked up to the correct pins, refer to manual page 33), and see if it shows signs of life. If it does, shut down and check your fan hookup.

The correct pinout for the fan headers is shown on page 28. On Panaflo fans, the red wire is always the positive wire, and the ground wire will be either blue or black. You don't want to plug those in on the wrong pair of pins or you might damage the motherboard and/or the fan.

I would recommend taking everything apart and starting over. Make sure you seat everything correctly. Make sure your jumpers on the motherboard are properly configured. Make sure you are properly grounded when handling all of the hardware, as you could inadvertently fry one of your components (especially RAM, CPU, etc.). Make sure you have a fan plugged in to the CPU FAN header on the motherboard. Some motherboards won't boot otherwise.

Hmm... well, green LED means the board's getting power. Try using a metal object (screwdriver tip, for instance) to make momentary contact between the two Power Button pins (4th and 5th positions from right on the bottom row). If that works, then your case's power button may not be working.

Also, if you put your Panaflo on the wrong pins, you could have done damage to the motherboard. Hopefully that's not the case.

Most likely you HAVE to have a good fan with 3 wires plugged into the CPU fan header, or it won't even post. Get another fan with a standard 3 pin header and plug it into the CPU header socket, then try to boot.

That's the case with some boards, notably SOYO's, but happens not to be the case with this board. It does have a specific speech prompt for CPU fan failure, however.

He doesn't have the wires for the speaker plugged in. Quote:" No, haven't plugged in any front wiring, just what I said in the OP. " So maybe he is not even powering on, and no speaker, but the HSF install comment worries me, he could kill his new CPU:"Also, I may not have installed the heatsink correctly, but should only be a slight chance."

This is a must. You have to have a PERFECT HSF install or you can kill the CPU in 7 seconds!!!!!!

True dat The speech reporter uses the rear audio-out jack, however, not the case speaker, and even a SOYO will power on without an RPM-reading fan... it just won't actually POST, it sits there at a blank screen. I mean, they can't detect fan RPM until the fan runs, right? And that would require the board doing more than just laying there with the green LED on.

I think there are some good ideas in here, including starting from square one.

  • Take the board out of the case
  • Lay it on cardboard
  • Take out the cards
  • Take out the RAM
  • Take out the CPU
  • Plug the power supply into the absolutely-unpopulated motherboard (no drives, no CPU, no RAM, no cards).
  • Plug the power supply into the wall and flip its rocker switch ON. The mobo's green LED should come on now.
  • Trip the Power Button pins on the motherboard, and the power supply's fan should start to spin. If not, you've got mobo problems.

HTH

PS the board will shut down in under a second if the CPU is not getting thermal transfer to the heatsink. Asus' C.O.P. circuitry does work, and I would know

Alright, now this is kind of embarassing, but there were good ideas so don't consider your time wasted. And here it is:

I had the LED plugged into the pins for the power switch.

Switch the things, works fine, no probs with the panaflo or my CPU, just a little mental error.

They always say it's the simplest thing that causes the problem.

Thanks for your help anyways, sorry I couldn't have more of a problem

Hehe.....I bet a lot of people have done that but not many will admitt it ,anyway she`s working now which`s the most important thing .

Alright, I got it to boot, but it halted and printed an error that said something like "Warning! CPU Switched" or something like that. So I went into the BIOS, changed stuff, but no matter what it kept reading my 2400+ as an 1800+. I changed the multiplier and stuff, and when i rebooted, it printed "Warning!!! CPU Have Too Fast" or something in broken english. Went back to BIOS, changed settings, and now it won't POST or anything.

try resetting the CMOS and check to see whether there are any jumpers or check the bios that changes the FSB to 133MHz

Fixed it so it says I have a 2400+, but now it says that "Warning!! CPU over speed" thing
