i am new to linux and decided to try my hand at some linux stuff (networking, web sites, shares etc)

I have 2 boxex connected to a hub
first is WinXP Pro
second had Mandrake 8 before with a K7N2g MB
the onboard network adapter gave some problems but i had a nic there, so i plugged that in and it worked fine
Installed Fedora over this (about three times bc of the problem) and i am still having network issues
I can see the other shares/network servers from my fedora box (smb:///)
I can ping the windows box and the windows box can ping the fedora box
I have web sites on both machines and i can see them from the other machines using ip addresses
However, while I can access the net with the windows box, i cannot with the fedora box
I've tried turning off the firewall, taking off iptables but to no avail
any help here would be greatly appreciated
any other info u will need, just ask

thx

EDIT: 12:14pm
Seems that i can access outside servers if i use the ip address but not with domain names
Something is wrong when it tries to resolve the names
For instance I can go to http://64.7.209.82 but not fifa.com
What could cause this?

RE: Your edit:
If you are using DHCP, the DHCP server is not giving you dns servers. If you are using static ips, you aren't giving yourself DNS servers. Populate /etc/resolv.conf.

Are you running a dns server? If not, remove 127.0.01. Put in entries for the name servers your ISP gives you. Check your windows machine for those nameservers (ipconfig /all).

At the risk of sounding noobie
which line contains the name server from that command?
I can see dns server, dhcp server etc but no name server

No, i meant from the windows side
But don't worry, i figured it out
I used the values for the DNS servers as my nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf and now it works
thanks alot

ps. i plan on creating my own name server soon
would i need search localcomain or nameserver 127.0.0.1 or both?

thanks again for the help

It's good you figured it out on your own. I don't have a Windows box handy

search localdomain would search the domain localdomain. So you would proabaly want to change localdomain to the domain you set yourself up under. And if the nameserver is on 127.0.0.1 (localhost, that same physical machine) you would probably want to set the first nameserver to nameserver 127.0.0.1.
