I'm still thanking the good brother who hooked me up with the Rio Car 10 Gb. MP3 deal, nothing even comes close. But for the money, this doesn't seem bad

For Techie333, there used to be a lot of websites (that had pictures displaying step-by-step instructions) that showed you how to install car radios. I know - because I installed an "add-on" to my 96 Camry radio. But the links are no longer showing up that I used way back in 2001... So here's a verbal description:

http://on.starblvd.net/cgi-bin/bbsmsg?cabarett&tr=2813.1

Does anyone know if there are online guides (with pictures) on how to take apart the center console of a 96 Camry - or for that matter, any model car? Or have all the sites gone to pay-for-play?

Thanks.

Here's the webpage excerpt:

Hi;
If you look at the radio you'll notice that on 92-96
cars have a seperate bezal around the radio and pocket.
this bezal is held in by spring clips on the bottom
which if you pry out should just unclp (tilt out}
and just pull down to unhook. You should then see
the four phillips screws holding the radio and
pocket that come out as an assembly. Unplug the
harness by depressing the tabs on the molex's
and pick up an adapter plug from any audio place
and your ready to put in the radio of your choice.
don't forget to pull out the antenna plug.
Good Luck!

For those of you asking if we think you can put the deck in yourself, the answer is probably. Gettting the dash apart is the hardest part. It varies from car to car. On my '89 Celebrity, it was very difficult. On my '92 Sentra, it couldn't be easier.

You will do just as good of a job yourself as some of the bonehead sleazeballs at places like BB and Audio King.

If your radio is a standard radio size (single DIN), the new radio should bolt right in to your factory mounts.

You need a wiring harness adapter for your car, which you can get at wal-mart for about $6. You will also need about 25 butt connectors (blue color) and a wire crimper from a hardware store or place like Radio Shack so you can connect the wring from the radio to the harness adapter. For those with Nissans, you will most likely need a Nissan Diversity Antenna Adapter, which they sell at sounddomain.com for $10 shipped.

Some cars have wierd setups, like a Bose system with external amplifiers and whatnot. Wiring these is somewhat more difficult, you have to bypass the factory amps or convert the output of your new deck to line level, but it's still not too difficult to figure out.

Installation instructions are usually clear, wires are color coded and diagrammed, if you can build pcs, you can install a car stereo.

Has anyone tried this current on sale model (with the remote) if it picks up in the same part of the song (mp3) when you restart your car. I ask because I'll be using it to listen to lectures encoded in MP3, and I'd hate to have to fast forward to the right spot 45 minutes into a lecture.
I read the thread that the model initially on sale didn't , but perhaps the newer model (with the remote) does.
thanks

<< yep.....those who believe walmart and K-mart are for poor folks got it wrong!! (and believe me almost more than half the ppl in this forum rag on walmart and kmart as shops only for the poor and meek)!!

again, the brand for the MP3 player is called Xtreme Sound... 160Watts Max(4chnls), Rms is most pbly like nutz...reads ID3 tags, search capability with for Directories and File names...
-Pre-Amp outs
-3 Preset EQ

_Better than the Koss Mp3 indash in my opinion.....

---
just a note, i have to leave now, be patient if you have questions, i will be back!!!!

EDITED: for the same price now, you can get the Koss brand which has a remote, and also 1 Sub out and four more RCAs pre-outs.....a lot better!! Remote comes very handy esp. while driving and searching files by file name(NOBODY's IN-DASH PLAYER HAS THIS OPTION CURRENTLY with their mp3 car player)

This CD player SUCKS!!! I just installed it in my girlfriends car over Christmas. The motorized face is LOUD and the electronics are not shielded well at all.... it picks up alternator noise 100% of the time. I highly recommend that you do not get this player!!

I've built a few PCs,and I used to be a be a (slightly above average) 'bonehead sleezeball' installer at BB and spent a lot of time re-installing decks and repairing dashboards that very intelligent people screwed up trying to install it themselves.

Installing car audio equipment is just like anything else in life-there are a million factors that can effect your results. I reccomend finding someone with some car audio install experience if you don't want to pay a professional. At the very least, find some instructions that are specific to your year, make, and model exactly, and make sure you have all of the parts (i.e. wire harnesses) and tools you'll need in advance. It may save you a lot of headaches (and $$) later.

Some cars have all kinds of hidden dangers that you may encounter. For example, replacing the factory deck in some cars is simple. But your remote locking won't work anymore afterwards, and your factory deck may be useless, to. Just because you can build a PC does not always mean you can put a deck in a car, and vice versa. A PC you can put on a desk and completely dissasemble. And if you screw up building a PC, it won't wreck the A/C, ruin the furniture, or kill the electricity for your whole house.

I took back my first one of these since the CD/MP3 player part stopped working.

The second one I got istn any better. The face gets stuck on the way down and will not go back up unless pushed up.
The CD player does not work at first either, takes a little while.

And both units had bad alternator noise. Even with an additional noise filter (so that makes two on there), still have noise

you know what.....i think ill just stick with a cd player because first of all I have 400 blank CD-R and I don't think I need to fit 200 songs on one cd..............because of all the problems you guys are having.......i think ill just go get a sony or jvc........unless more people think that this koss one is better......

The JVC-KD-SH99 is very good - I've had one for the past month

I don't think you will be disappointed. The great thing about the mp3 capability is that you don't need to change the discs very often though

I'd get a car mp3 player, but only if it's made by Pioneer, their products
are pretty decent, although Alpine is real sweet.

Alright, all you people that want to buy an in-dash MP3 player, rush to the nearest Fry's Electronics store. Fry's has the Koss MP3 in-dash player for $97! Pricing is good until tomorrow only. The model is the Koss MS551 with remote. For the price you can't beat it.

I also got the Pioneer 7400MP from Etronics.com for $235 + shipping. The Pioneer comes with the remote and it is sweetttt. But hey, for $97, I got the Koss for my wife's car.

The Pioneer 7400 is absolutely sweet. It has tons of options such as built-in high pass filter, subwoofer output with RCA jacks, built-in 3 band equalizer, different environment settings, XM radio capability, etc. It has everything plus great sound. My only complaints against it are:

1) The faceplate does not flip inward to hide it from thieves. The Kenwood ones have a faceplate that simply flips inward when you turn it off so you don't have to carry it around with you.

2) Only the first 16 characters of MP3 song titles are displayed. If you want to see the rest, you have to hold down a button for a few seconds before the title would scroll so you can see the rest of the title. On the Kenwood models, I believe the titles automatically scroll after like 5 seconds.

You know, I don't know how to put this in your guys thick heads...

1st of all, the whole point of having an mp3 indash is so that u could stash all the best 200 songs of your life together

-the next part comes, how tp do your search for those songs that you really want to listen to at a given specific time/mood by name while you are driving?

HMM... your ALPINE won't do it except by track... Your JVC won't do it except by track... Your pioneer won't do except by track....

Digme's listening schedule Monday - Friday

Mornings - Jazz collection, search Carless Whisper
Coming back from work - Sizzla, Marley etc.
Saturdays - Old school
Sunday - Worship Ferando Ortega, Etc.
All this collection in ONE MaxWell CD-RW(200 songs)

THE Whole point of having an MP3 in-dash player is to have the ability to search songs by name, and nothing on the market except the KOSS mp3 player with a remote has that ability. if you didn't want this ability, why in the World did u in the first place wanted to get an Mp3 player? and why would u want to have Id3 tag display capability? IT JUST DON"T MAKE SENSE.....END OF MY STORY!!!!

I have the $300 Sony MP3 in my RV - it is our full time "home stereo".

On some discs it does take 10 to 15 seconds before you can play, others it takes only 6 or 8. I'm not sure why some take longer than others (same basic structure / same number songs).

IT DOES allow you tput the soncs in a subdirectory. On the remote, one back/forth button will skip subdirectories... the other skips tracks. So you can easily change from one group of songs to another.
