Edited title: Should we have a "general discussion" thread?

This started as a gripe about the "nef thread" - it has turned into what I hope will be a positive discussion about how we can reduce OT threads, and still allow those who choose to "socialize" with our friends here... not in that cesspool of OT.

I've changed the poll as well. Please... can we just discuss this like teammates trying to make it a better place? I'm sorry I used the word "constipated." To me... it means overly wrapped up in one's own self-importance. I therefore... am constipated. ok?

edit: Posted Further down - and reposted here for your convenience.

Perhaps this could all be settled diplomatically.

My observations:

Mods don't like meaningless crap threads, and I can't blame them.

"Nef" threads per se, are almost always meaningless crap, except that we were
using this one as an "anything goes" have some fun sorta thing... so perhaps
by definition we should have called it something else.

I would propose for the members consideration that we start a "water cooler" thread, or something of the sort - for those of us who choose only to socialize with our DC buds. This would be with the understanding that we won't engage in a bunch of meaningless crap, empty posts, and the like. We'll self-police, and the mods won't have to be hassled.

I'd submit that it'd be a suitable repository for items that would otherwise not warrant a new thread, but that we could chat freely amongst ourselves.

I'd submit that this approach would actually REDUCE the number of OT threads, giving those who may be overly constipated - only ONE thread to ignore.

How does THAT sound?

As the most prolific neffer on that thread I am quite prejudiced (hm is that the right word?) but: I still vote yes!

I think that it was very inconsistent of them to lock ours while ignoring the one in ATOT... I would simply like to see equal rights for DC'ers and OT'ers - preferably in the form of unlocking our thread.

Maybe if we offer a prize for the 10,000th post they'll leave it open

I will put up a cruncher, 24/7 on any project in the name of the 10,000 poster as a prize. Any current TeAm DC Project. I will run the machine 24/7 for 30 days (at least.)

I voted No. There's an entire "Off Topic" forum for folks to go to and post blank messages, goofball garbage, and whatever else.

Well, there's a curmudgeon (sp?) among us...

I for one absolutely can not stand the harsh tone and moronic posters that one frequently finds in OT. DC is a much nicer environment, and I like a bit of socialization from time to time. I'm sorry that some people have a problem with that, but it's my opinion, and we know what opinions are like.

While I've usually been squarley behind everything you say, you have to acknowledge that many of us here in DC wouldn't be caught dead in OT. I am sure I speak for the vast majority of DC members on this.

How is a nef thread socializing?

Same way telling jokes "around the water cooler" is. Sure this is DC - but it's a group and a "family" unto itself. I wouldn't go to OT if it were the last forum on earth. I don't know anyone over there, and don't care to.

If this forum were strictly about DC, and nothing else - it'd suck. We at least confine a large amount of off-topic stuff to the nef thread, and it's not like there are usually multiples.

I certainly didn't intend to get people all bloody worked-up over it. To a great extent, it's ALL tongue-in-cheek. The "no" votes actually surprise me, but there's always folks that take themselves too seriously.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled strictly DC with no kidding around discussions.

Some people were posting useful info in the guise of "neffing." Some would rant about a bad day, or rejoice over a positive occurance - the type of stuff that you couldn't really start a dedicated thread for in DC, that you'd get nothing but flames and useless crap for in OT, but that fit very well in our "general purpose" one-size-fits-all sit-back-and-relax thread. I realize that there are forums set up by TeAm members which might be used for this purpose, but those never get the frequent attention and regular participation that the main forums here receive.

Edit: I'm off to college in a few days, so I won't be around as much. Good luck and have "fun" with your serious, no-humor-allowed DC forum - if that's the way you like it!

Well I voted yes although I don't tend to post much in those thread myself ( I believe 1 was my post tally for the thread in question ) I can see where people have a good time posting in them and I fail to see the harm in one thread. After all we are doing this ( Our hobby )for fun aren't we?
Otherwise what's the point in it ?

Hey - don't look at me - I didn't PM or message anyone, Mod or otherwise to have the thread locked up. I just tried my best to ignore it.

Besides OT, there's irc channels, off-site forums and plenty of other places for folks to "nef". You may not agree with my take on this - that's fine by me.

Please understand that not all of us (ok, speaking for myself now) have time for IRC. I gave up IRC and IMs long ago because I just don't have time. Off site forums are nice in theory, but I haven't seen any that have that much participation - usually they're a small clique of "old timers" (in which case I don't fit in), or they're mostly from a mini-team of one sort or another (and thus I don't really care to join). I'd like to have a great time with my fellow TeAm members, but I guess I'll just have to duct tape my fingers and be quiet since I don't have anything of importance to add to the serious discussions that shall be allowed here exclusively.

lol, I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. It's been awhile since I've been here. Nef threads used to comprise "nef1" "nef2!" "neffffffffffffff!" and litterally nothing "social". Guess I (wrongly) assumed nef threads didn't include any social stuff. I admit I didn't read the last one . Heck, I rarely ventured out of the safe harbours of the DC forum myself, years ago. I never said I was against socializing within the DC forum. I was just against neffing for the sake of neffing -- but apparently there were some social bits interspersed. I'll have to take ya'lls words for it

well ya'll are all welcome to come nef on the forums on the Rebel Alliance's site.
You don't have to be a member of the RA to join and I'm sure Mike would love to have more people to nef I mean post with.

EDIT

The problem I see with that is that it would become like "Brag and Moan" over in hot deals for example. Most people don't use it because it goes largely ignored.......rebate tracking thread is another example. Most people just return to the old original thread and bump it looking for updates since so many posts in the "correct thread" go unanswered.

I really like the water cooler thread idea and perhaps it would work within the DC forum but these types of threads don't seem to go over as well as the good old "can a mod delete this thread" types!

Still a good idea I think!

It is simply amazing to me how this one person can vote no on an innocent poll, give a reason for their vote, and instantly become a target for name-calling and questions about their state of health. Some folks here truly are amazing.

So tell me petrusbroder how long did we last?

Well... we could agree to "ground rules" I'd think.

The DC crowd is a "cut above" any forum I've ever been a part of. It's the one reason that after all these years... I'm still here. MOST of my true friends are here.

People from other countries, have come to stay at my house... met where? Here in DC.

This isn't about me, I just use it as an example. There are actually quite a number of us that are this way, as some of my dearest friends will attest. I don't like most people I have to deal with on a daily basis. It's HERE that I find understanding and real friendship.

edit:

nw - why are you assuming responsibility for any of this? It's a discussion, not a hate-festival. It would seem we're on the verge of coming to some sort of middle ground... methinks thou doth protest too much. Reading back over the thread, I fail to see where you were called any names, nor do I see any reference to your state of health. If you're referring to my "constipated" comment - well... in my opinion, anyone that becomes overly worked-up about a social thread is constipated. That's just my opinion... and it's pointed at ANYONE who is by that definition "constipated." If the shoe fits, wear it. If not - why not join in a meaningful discussion about how to improve things?
