.edu + firewall + ftp = hassle :o(

Hey guys! I just got ethernet connected to my comp at a big name university. I want to setup an FTP, but it can't be accessed from anyone outside my school. I'm guessing im firewalled, but is there anyway around that? I tried setting up the ftp on open ports like 80, i figured that would be open for web surfing etc. but it didn't work either? And i tried a traceroute to microsoft, and a lot of the traces turned up timing out. Anyone got any ideas? I'm sorry if this question has been asked already? Can someone post a link for me or something then? I really need your help, and i came here first b/c often this is the quickest/easiest place to find the best of the best Thanks for all your help in advance!

firewalls are generally configured to prevent inbound TCP connections - that is one of their main purposes. Maybe call your schools tech support? I really doubt they'll allow it, not to mention the IP addressing problems.

Also, Microsoft's servers do not respond to pings/traceroutes.

yeah, we don't allow ANY icmp through our firewalls.

No ICMP? How do your users get ICMP error replies from outside? You haven't had any odd network problems crop up? My experience has been that blocking all ICMP ends up causing odd network errors when communicating to the outside.
