Educate me on commuting to NY

So there is a possibility I'll be working in NYC (Financial District).

I currently live in Central NJ (Monmouth County) but may be moving in the next few months.

Is my best bet NJ Transit to Newark, then PATH to NYC? I don't want to take the bus.

If my info is correct it would be roughly $350/month between the NJT and PATH.

Any thoughts?

p.s. moving to the city is not on the table at this point

If you have access to NJ transit, the best way is to take the train to Secaucus Junction. From their there is a high speed train that goes under the river to Penn Station NYC.

Of you can stay on the train and proceed past Secaucus and go to Hoboken, the original terminus of the line. From their you can take ferries or the path train to either world trade center or to the 33rd street line.

I've always commuted to NYC from Northern Jersey but I beleive it should be the same/similar from where you are coming from.

P.S. If I am not mistaken, there is a ferry from South Jersey as well that goes to Manhatten.

take the ny waterways ferry! i did it for 8 months when i lived in jersey & worked on wall st.

way more relaxing than PATH. shorter walk to wall st from the pier vs the path station as well.

I like the ferry. That's usually how I go to the city. However, I think it might be outside my budget for a daily commute.

the bus isn't as bad as you might think.

otherwise, yeah... probably NJ transit into Penn Station Newark and PATH to World Trade.

going up to Penn Station NY is probably going to be needless extra time if you'll just have to hop on another subway to go downtown from there.

yeah, the ferry is stupid expensive... I'll take it once in awhile, especially when I've got to go to the Jacob Javitz Center, but it's a luxury expense. plus, unless you happen to live in walking distance on the waterfront in Jersey City/Hoboken, chances are that you'd have to take mass transit to get to the ferry in the first place (living in Jersey City even, I'd have to take the PATH down to Exchange Place and hop on the ferry there)

You couldn't pay me to endure the Port Authority Bus Terminal on a regular basis.
