Hey all. Question about Canada and public high schools:

Are students that live in Canada required to attend grades K-12 by law? Or is it possible that they stop going to school after the 11th grade? Is the 12th grade entirely optional? Are classes in the 12th grade most elective courses, courses chosen entirely by the student, or courses in all subjects?

I remember reading that the 12th grade was optional and now I am writing an opinion piece for my school's newspaper. Thanks much for the info.

Well, its not based on Grade here in Alberta. Once you are 17, you can quit. No earlier.

Once you turn 18, you become your own student. You have the ability to quit school.

All but one of your courses in Grade 12 (English) are elective. Most end up with 6 in their final year, some need 8.

There's been something in the news in recently about increasing the age when students can quit in Ontario. Do some searching, The Toronto Star will probably have something.

K-12 education is a provincial responsibility. Each province's curriculum is different.

I think that's the case, yes. Some google searching can probably find a list of the ages/grades for each province and territory.

The only way to receive a diploma, though, is to complete your 12th grade year, correct?

I really do like that 12th graders can take mostly elective classes though. In the U.S. it's quite a bit different. English and U.S. gov't/Economics are required. Everything else can be electives, but that usually isn't the case. More sciences and math courses are generally taken.

Ontario goes up to Grade 12, just recently we eliminated Grade 13. But they also added in Compulsory "Volunteer" community service

I think in manitoba you have to be 16 to drop out, but I could be mistaken on that.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but is there an option of taking non-elective courses for students in the 12 grade? A second year of calculus perhaps as a 12th grader? Some more sciences? Or is the only course required (and available) English? The rest are electives?

I can't thank you guys enough. this is helping me out a lot.

In manitoba you need a certain number of english, math and science credits. but that was like 5 years ago when i graduated, no clue how it is now.

this site has some info about MB.
here

Canada doesn't have standardized education, it's a province by province thing.
