Today, my wife, daughter and I were all walking out the back door when my wife points to this spider on the threshold of the door. It had an abdomen about the size of an acorn. We're all jumping around like a bunch of idiots and the spider runs out to where I can kill it. I pick of a nearby shoe and thump it down on this arachnid.

Wouldn't you know it, about 15-20 little spiders burst from it's abdomen and run everywhere. My wife runs to get me the bug spray and comes back with a can of wasp killer that shoots out in a stream. What am I supposed to do with this, drown them? I need a spray-type bug spray. She comes back with the right bug killer and I spray the spider babies and kill them.

I though spiders laid eggs. If I hadn't seen this with my own eyes I never would have believed it. Gross!! :|

I just thought I would share that with y'all.

I hate spiders. Even watching a documentary about them on TV literally sends shivers up my spine (honestly! every time!)

I absolutely abhor spiders as well. Today when changing my oil, I noticed a very small spider with a rather large abdomen... I decided to let the little fukker go, but not before I had my fun with it (nothing cruel, just trap it in a socket for like 2 seconds, poke it with blades of grass)

I think they're spooky but more tolerable than insects such as flies. Let them live!

I don't understand why so many people are so afraid of spiders.

About a month ago, my gf was showering at my apartment when she noticed a spider at the other end of the shower. Rather than just kill it, she pulled the inner curtain around so that it was between her and the spider, and watched it the whole time. Afterward, she kept checking back every half hour to make sure it was there so I could kill it when I came home from work. WTF?

hehe you wimps

I just let them be or smash them, although I must admit I can get kinda jumpy with them around, especially if they're very large (which they rarely are in my country, though)

I only kill the dangerous ones like Black Widows and then only of they are close to the house, otherwise I leave them be. They are too good at getting rid of other critters I dislike more.

When they start crawling around in my room when I'm half asleep.. they gotta go.

What I hate even more: cave crickets... You know what'll scare the crappers outta you? coming out of the shower, and turning a shirt inside out only to have a cave cricket (a damn big one too) jump on you...

Daedalus,
good job, dude
most spiders take care of pest control around the house
wolf spiders take care of black widows from what I have been told, so I never kill those ones, and I had tons of those in my previous house

for some reason, they always found their way into the bath tub, which was a one-way trap for them
I would have to get a piece of paper or something to free them

I had a pet tarantula (Mexican Red-knee) that was just gorgeous.

I got bit by an unidentified spider several years back that caused the skin on my hand to blister and peel for a few months. Very strange deal.

If any of you live in the south-west, and happen to see a spider with a large abdomen, it's probably a black widow spider. It would be wise to kill it, very carefully of course, because you might get bitten if you're not careful.

Also, a popular myth is that having spiders around the house keeps the number of other insects down. Spiders are never going to eat a significant number of insects in your house, otherwise they would die of starvation. Rather, having spiders in your place means that you have a serious bug problem. My parents don't seem to understand that, when I try to convince them to have some exterminators come over and spray our house down (they think killing insects is evil).

Living in the rural areas, you have a respect for spiders. They spin webs and kill the flys, nats, misquitoes, and other annoying insects. You do need to look out for the dangerous spiders. Such as the Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders. The best way to identify them is the markings on their abdomen. The Black Widow has an hour glass and the Brown recluse has a fiddle. Kill these spiders. The brown recluse will hide in closets for long periods of time. When you pull out a blanket, make sure to shake it out first. The brown recluse injects a cell destroying venom that can cause permanent skin destruction.

I have a healthy respect for Black Widows. Some years ago I was replacing an accelerator cable on a 69 Fiat 850 Coupe. It was at night and the car had been sitting for weeks ouside. I had been under there with a flashlight but not until the next morning did I notice the 12-15 Black Widows that had been only inches from my entire body the night before. I was lucky to not have disturbed them enough for a bite. They left me alone that night so I do feel bad if I have to kill one. I've seen the effects of a single bite when my Dad stuck his hand near a bush to turn on a water faucet and it is nasty. Imagine getting bit by 10 at once.
Wolf spiders are more aggressive I hear but I have not seen one that I know of. Supposedly the Black Widow has the most potent poison of all venomous creatures. Thank God their venom sac isn't that big.

I used to spray them with hairspray if they really bugged me (i.e. if I'm trying to sleep and they're right above my head). After about 30 seconds of continous spraying the, hairspray would start to stiffen and the spider wouldn't be able to move. Sometimes I'd just kill them but other times I'd let them outside and eventually they'd be able to leave (after some rain I guess hehehe).

Was watching Discover channel last night and they showed Banana spiders - ugg, don't want to get bit by one of those.

One of my friends went to Florida once and tried to kill a crab spider down there. He squished it with a boot, and it actually survived!

Down in South America they have the Banana Spiders that are bigger than anything I have seen around here

We were always under the impression that they were non-venomous

I awoke one night to find one on my arm the size of my out-stretched hand. As soon as I moved it took off and went up on the wall. I grabbed a syringe and filled it with cologne and held a lit candle in front of it to make an amateur flamethrower. Burned the thing to a crisp.

Years later in my E.M.T. course I learned that the Banana spider is one of the world's most venomous.

Black widows can only kill elderly or children. The poison although strong isn't strong enough to take down a healthy adult. Brown recluse are more dangerous but they don't go out looking for attention. The US has very few poisonous animals, 3 snakes and 2 spiders, go to austrailia if you wanna worry about poisonous snakes and spiders.

If a spider comes into my house it's dead. I don't play in their web, they wanna play in mine they won't be around long.

Mainly, I just don't like them on me or when that Black Widow was in my shoe when I was about to put it on.

The Banana Spider webs are thick and sticky. Don't really know how to describe it, kind of like a sticky fishing line. It is a lot stronger and thicker then your regular web and has a syrupy substance on it. It isn't the most pleasant feeling when going through the woods get the web in your face. If I remember correctly it doesn't taste good either or the 3-inch or so spider crawling on your neck isn't too pleasant. Never got bit. Heard some scientists are looking to making a synthetic web do use in bullet-proof vests.

Cockroaches are worst in my opinion.
