/wave Hi, first post. And ya, I did do *some* forum/web searching first.
Anyway, my question is about different resolutions in cameras, particularly P&S. DSLRs might as well shoot at their full resolution, so I'm not worried about my dslr. However, in a pocket-sized p&s for $150 rated for 12MP (ok I don't think that exists yet for that price, but you know it's coming) noise becomes a problem. Noise happens, but that's largely the trade-off for a p&s. What I'm wondering though, is what happens when you set the same camera to only take pictures at say, 6MP? Do they just take a 12MP and resize it for you? (Which would not reduce noise) Or do they only use say, 2 'pixels' on the senor for each pixel, and would that reduce noise?
As I understand it, a big part of the p&s noise problem is packing the sensor with too many 'pixels' (image-sensing sites, I forget the proper name) and you get light-spill between them. Since it's harder to find 2MP p&s's anymore, I"m curious if there's a way around that by just reducing the resolution for those times when you're just wanting to email/post a 1MP picture anyway (hence using a p&s instead of a dslr.)
If anyone knows, I figure it's the Anand forums, so that's why I'm here. tia.
