I just ordered one with a Arctic silencer. Has anyone installed it on this card? Any tips or things I need to know before I do?

Also I think the thermal sensor is broken, it's stuck at 98°C
I felt the heatsink with my hand, it didn't feel like I could boil water on there, or even fry eggs, it was just lukewarm.

98c is really hot, if it's that hot idle then there is something wrong (especially with an ultra heatsink), maybe try a different driver? I had a 6800gt that ran around 83c under full load with the single slot cooler, my 6800u runs anywhere from 54c or so (idle) to maybe something in the 70s under full load, nowhere near 98c.

Good luck!
Yes as I said, it's stuck on 98C, so it's obviously not reporting the correct temperature.

sounds like something is seriously wrong with the card.

return it for a replacement before Rollo blames you for its woes

To those that got this to 'upgrade' from a 6800nu or 6800GT, can you provide some benchmarks so we know better where this card stands?

Well, This is my first post. I bought the 6800 limited edition from newegg last week, and got it yesterday. I OCed it to 350/1100 from the first min I installed it, and burned it overnight without any problem. Today, I decided to put some AC5 on this card (since I really like the stock heatsink, very good quality built). Oh boy, look what I found; right after I removed the GPU heatsink, I found that the original cheap white silicon thermal paste was removed, and some AC like paste was on the GPU (whoever did that did a very lousy job; there are plently white color paste left on the resistors around the GPU). This lead me to believe: These limited edition cards failed the stress test, and eVGA replaced better thermal paste to get better cooling.

Anyway, after I put on the AC5, I OC the card to 375/1200 and ran 3Dmark03; NO GOOD, the stock heatsink can't handle DDR3 @ 1200, 3Dmark03 freezed for about a sec. and the score was 7793. So, I clocked the memory back down to 1150, and got a 11037 score on 3Dmark03. The stock heatsink and AC5 are actually doing a very good job, I am now running the card @ 360/1100, and the temp is 46C idle, and 60 loaded.

Overall, I really think this card is a real good deal.

BTW, my system is A64 2800 with VNF3-250 @ 2150 1:1 memory @ 2.9V.

Well guys, keep us updated on your scores and overclocking (normal clocking?) of this card. I just placed an order for it so mine should be here in a couple of days.

A thing i found odd is that when you compare the cards on the new egg page the stats list the Max Resolution@32bit Color to be 2048X1536@85Hz whereas they have the 6800gt listing only at 2048X1536@60Hz. The 85hz is comparable to the Ultra specs. Hmm....

Well hopefully this will be the deal of the year. (and it still isnt out of stock!) I plan to put the GT bios on mine, then just overclock a bit more (hopefully) Once i get mine i will let you know how i do.

Also for putting the NV5 silenceer cooler on it, i would hope that you own a dremmel tool, or else it will be a PITA. Of course i wouldnt start hacking the thing up till you knew that you werent going to return it for an RMA.

I did some benchmarks at 380/1100
I had a lot of artifacts.
Doom3 timedemo1 at 1152x864 2xAA/2xAF medium detail - 50.2FPS
CS:Source at 1600x1200 4xAA/8xAF Video stress test - 88.3FPS
that's it for now
I played the river level of Farcry 1600x1200 4xAA/8xAF everything on ultra high, it was a tad choppy at places, but it was playable.

Can we all agree that since this card didn't pass 'Ultra' caliber stress tests that a wise/safe OC would be a very moderate 350 and that's it? I can't understand why ppl would risk this particular card approaching and passing 400...

For people that have this, try a GPU overclock without o/cing the memory (past 1100); my ulta can do 1310 mem but I have to lower my core overclock, and the core clocks higher when the memory is lower.

Also for those experiencing noise issues, gainward's 'xpertool' software should work with your card and allow you to change the fan speed, both in windows and games. It works fine with my PNY card.

In addition, if someone can dump their bios using nvflash and see what the core voltage is I'd really love to know (use nvbitor found @ mvktech.net)

Thanks

I think I'm gonna order one, but is there an problem with it having dual DVI and no VGA ports? My monitor is VGA, but I think I saw a picture with a DVI/VGA adapter. Is there some disadvantage or slowdown to using that?

I've been thinking about this, and I've decided to hold off for the folling reasons:

1. My computer is very quiet because I have chosen only silent parts. If I got the 6800LE I would have the hack up the PCI slot cover in order to install a NV5 silencer. I have done some dremeling in my day, but I wouldn't want to take the risk in this situation.

2. The 6800 LE requires two power connections, even though the core is clocked less than a GT. I have an Antec 430true, but I'm not keen on the idea of a video card sucking up more power than it needs.

3. Limited core overclock. Reading the various posts it looks like maximum OC's are between 380-400, but even these may not be safe in the long run. Like others have stated, most GT's perform far better than this.

So I've decided I will probably get a GT when the price comes down a bit (which admittedly could be a while). I'm not saying this isn't a good deal, but personally I'd rather wait a bit longer and spend a little more to get a higher quality card. My 9800pro isn't quite obsolete YET.

You better hurry, there are only 13 left at newegg at the moment. THey have included 2 dvi to VGA adapters for you. The only disadvantge i can see is that the plug will stick out more from the back of the computer. Other then that i dont know of any performance loss from going to DVI to VGA

I dont think it would be that hard to do, get something to cover up the board and just dremmel off the extra metal with a cutting bit. I plan on doing it once i am sure that i am not going to RMA it (faulty temp sensor, ect)

I would probably do that too if i had a 9800Pro (i have one in my rig right now, but it is my roomates that i am borrowing from him, i have a ti4200) but i think alot of people are making a jump from a geforce4 or worse to this, such as myself. If i can get GT speeds out of it i will feel as though i got a good deal, anything more would just be a freebie

Guys, don't forget, if you need more pwr or connectors you could always use an older pwr supply strapped or physically connected to your case. I have an Antec 300w unit sitting around and I'm sure some others have one sitting some where collecting dust as well. In my case as previously stated, my Antec 430 w Truepower is doing the job for now.
