Already? They've been out for over a month at least! Kodak, Canon, and Nikon are using even larger sensors for the high-end Pro cameras.

I can't wait for the Microtek "27 Megapixel (interpolated)!!!" camera with "52x zoom (2x optical, 50x digital)" for $99.99.

that zoom sucks. i would never use digital, and the optical SUCKS. for such a crazy camera?

plus, if its 2x optical and 50x digital, the total zoom would be 100x if i'm not mistaken.

8 Mp cameras were announced a while ago, although Sony was the first to market. There are also only a few manufacturers who make 8 Mp sensors e.g. Canon use a Sony sensor in their 8Mp camera, whereas they have previously used their own sensors. Interestingly, some reviewers have commented that the Sony sensor is perhaps not as good as some of Canon's older sensors (e.g. their 6 Mp sensor used in the EOS 300D).

Anyhow, I'm watching and waiting in anticipation - but I think if was going to get an 8Mp camera it would have to be a DSLR.

Sigma SD10 runs like 10.3 megapixel for $2000 with a lens.

It's not really 10 megapixel though. It uses 10 million sensors to produce a 3 Mp image. More conventional cameras use 1 sensor per pixel (and a bit of interpolation). The SD10 has comparable image quality to a 5 or 6 Mp conventional camera - but is totally outclassed by the 11 Mp Canon 1Ds.

MPixel doesn't matter. It's all about the objective and the sensor itself. I'd rather have the Canon Rebel 300D with 6MPixel instead of the Sony F828 8MPixel. They have some nasty color thingies on some edges.

WELL SAID. I'd stay away from Sonys unless you are just taking everyday pictures.

Doesn't one of the Fuji 6mp camera's interpolate out to 12mp? I'm pretty sure it's under a grand too.

Of course, the 12mp interpolated shot doesn't look as clear or crisp as the 8mp shot from the sony that Depreview matched it up with, but it's still pretty impressive. 12mp TIFF is like what, 35mb per image?

Yep. And the pictures will STILL look like they were taken by a crappy $100 camera

Most people don't realize that Lens quality is still the most important feature in a camera, film or digital. I already have friends who are bragging about their 5 Megapixel cameras that they got for $250 from Gateway, only to complain that it takes forever for the camera to process a picture and the image quality doesn't seem as good as my 4 Megapixel Powershot S45.

Not to thread crap, but the thing that really pi$$es me off about the number of megapixels in digital cameras is that when kodak took the risk of venturing into possibly making a digital camera several years back, they suceeded, and released a 6 megapixel camera as a professional tool The type of camera that costs thousands of bucks and is used by magazines like sports illustrated. Now their professional grade is 14Mp. What erks me is that when the technology for 6Mp existed, companies milked the market as we the consumer bought 1Mp, and 2Mp, etc cameras. Only now are we getting past what kodak did years ago. Me personally, i'm waiting for the gigapixel camera, until then, my 2.0 is fine for me.

Sony cameras tend to have some of the nicest image quality out there, and their hologram AF-assist technology is unparalleled. I still would tend to shy away from them because I resent the Memory Stick, but in general they make great cameras that are suitable for all uses, not just "everyday pictures."

The 828 and its CCD have generated some bad press, but that is not really Sony's fault per se IMO - it is just a function of cramming more and more pixels into a tiny CCD.
