I play first person shooters. Is this point and click? I have never liked those. Is there a demo to make sure I like it before I buy?

no demo

Oblivion is a Hybred Action FantasyRPG with FPS style fighting.
[it is still RPG . . . but more 'action' than "heavy rpg"]

my 1st fantasy RPG [i played KotOR series - loved the story and HATED the D&D style fighting . . . in Oblivion you "fight" like any FPS . . . ]

my game of this millenium
i have over 1,000 hours into it - BEFORE the mods

let me try and balance some of the reviews here

outstanding graphics ... may be best graphics for a game ever.

huge world to endlessly explore

tons of levels

unusual monsters and designs

love making spells etc ... lets you be creative within the game.

but........

only has about 9/10 different monsters that you fight over and over again.

huge world suddenly becomes VERY,VERY repetitive

so many levels that character all turn out the same in the end(power-wise) magic users can fight, fighters can magic etc.

i played it all the way through ........... once and haven't touched it again.

just fyi

you sound like a FPSer . . . Oblivion is RPG

all the way through
i doubt it

you mean the MQ

*everything* means ALL SQs [over 205] . . . head of all 9 Factions . . .
*All Skills and Abilities Maxed* . . . 90 unique Oblivion Gates to close . . . and ~400 places to explore.

i DID finish it. . . at Level 92 withOUT cheats or Mods . . . it takes hundreds of hours . . .

and NOW i am playing entirely NEW [great] Quests and exceptional User-made mods. .. including useful 'companions' . . . 1,100 hours .
:Q

i just never found the "love making" spells . . . where?

don't skimp . . . Oblivion can bog down the fastest rigs . . .

a hint: if anyone is having problems running outdoor scenes smoothly - turn OFF self shadows and Grass all the way Down [you miss the grass but everything really speeds up]

Well so far I bought a 7800GT video card, 2 gigs of OCZ DDR2 ram, and 320 gb sata2 hd. I'm still waiting for the E6400 conroe to be more widely available and hit MSRP (hopefully). Still researching on what to get for motherboard.

Great overall rig to be sure, but the video card will slow you down/bottleneck in terms of Oblivion at max settings/high res. Oblivion really shines with ATI X1900 XT/X series of cards (and the upcoming X1950 and R80 R600 next gen cards).

Unfortunately, I couldn't rationalize spending too much on a video card. I got the 7800GT off of ebay for $200. That was before the Hot Deal concerning the ATI X1900 AIW for $150. Oh well.

Curious. Does anybody know how well the Xbox 360 version stack up against the PC version?

QFT

Once you realize you are on the level and advance treadmill, you see that you are fighting the same stuff over and over in copy/pasted dungeons. The main story line is pretty good, but I can't see playing this for more than 30-40 hours.

The combat is really over simplified, and some spells/skill make the game far to easy. I think I ended up casting a high level pet and going invis for most encounters. Wow, that was skill!

Still worth $30 and a single play through.
