its still not a question for upgrading or not..no problem if any of us is not gettin it..

Still, I doubt he wants that kind of visual quality. Oblivion looks great @ Max, but anything else, it's ugly.

That is only a point of view, but in any case I was only pointing out an alternative. The question was, does he have to upgrade for Oblivion. I found that answer to be no. He does not have to, even though he should.

Of course he doesnt. Technically I didnt have to upgrade to my current PC either, I could still have played Oblivion @ 640x480 with everything @ LOW (Radeon 9600 PRO). Now I'm in the sunshine with an X1900XT.

OK, first of all, the 6-series cards take a major hit in performance above 1600x1200 resolutions, so just accept the fact that you will not be playng Oblivion smoothly with that card at native resolution. Also, you have to turn down some settings. Turn off AA, HDR, Bloom, self shadowing, grass shadows, and shadow filtering. Also, set the grass drawing distance all the way down, as I have found this to have a significant effect on performance. Experiment with some other settings like texture size and draw distance until you get playable fps at an acceptable resolution. You may even have to drop the resolution to 1024 or lower to get playable fps, but there is no magical tweak that will give you 2x more performance than what you're getting now.

We get it... You are a troll, there isn't much more to comprehend.

Edit: I'm done responding to you in this thread, and this debate is closed as far I'm concerned. I suggest that Extelleron do the same.

Wow... I didn't expect it to blow up like this.

Like I said before; gaming isn't that big of a concern that I'm going to spend $300 on a card that I will max out for maybe 2 or 3 games before it becomes obsolete.

Thanks for all the replies.

I got it running smoothly at 1600x900 without lowering many of the effects -- I actually raised some of them above what they were before -- I just followed the tweaks guide -- the only issue I have right now is that at every "Loading area..." it pauses for about .25 seconds. The overall graphical quality of the game did go down slightly -- but now it is much smoother during battles.

Hi, I am running an AGP 6800nu and I find that 1024x768 with either 4xAA or HDR is pretty playable. Outdoor framerates can drop to the low 20s but indoors is a pretty solid 50 fps or so. 1280x960 was unplayable for me even without any AA or HDR. I turned off all grass and shadows as they don't honestly do much for me and I try to keep view distance maxed as it does greatly enhance the atmosphere of the game.

The loading area issue won't be solved with a new graphics card. I think that slight little "hiccup" on entering a new area is just something that we have to deal with. Luckily, travelling to a new area isn't something that you generally do in combat.

As far as settings/playability are concerned... Glad you got that squared away to your satisfaction. As long as you're happy with what you have, that's what matters. One note though, your screen has an aspect ratio of 16:10, and not 16:9, so your image is probably a tad bit distorted. You might want to try out 1440x900 instead, as it would be the correct aspect ratio and a few less pixels to boot.

If you're willing to not run at the native res on the 2405FPW, your standard 16:10 options are:

1920×1200 (native)
1680×1050
1440×900
...you probably don't want to go any lower

I would guess that 1440 x 900 would be the resolution you would have to use.

I'm getting my copy of Oblivion in a few days, and I'll be way happy if I can run at 1280 x 1024 or 1280 x 960.

I've actually been keeping it in windowed mode, because for some reason when I change the resolution back and forth it messes with my desktop placement -- it is an issue with Oblivion and not other programs (since they keep the desktop intact)

so 16:9 v 16:10 really isn't much of an issue (w/distortion)

I play Oblivion on my 2405FPW with a 7800GTX at 1920x1200 - and it runs kinda slow.

Make sure you have AA off and all the special tweaks. There is a short grass mod which should improve some things. Also, try reducing the render distance for trees and grass to the bare min.
