Even though I've got a Mach-e sitting in the drive I'm still really considering going through with my lightning reservation for a Pro. Keep the EV credit and flip it. There's no sales tax in Oregon. I'm sure demand is enough that people will pay close to sticker.

imo, the Mach-E is the best EV on the market right now, car-wise. Great creature comforts & an absolute joy to drive! However, I think the Lightning is going to surpass that because of all the features it has. My only complaint is the range (supposedly 230 & 300 miles). The primary reason I'm interested in the Cybertruck (vaporware for another year, at least!) is for the 500+ mile battery. Although some articles are saying that the Lightning could potentially hit 400 miles with an empty bed, which would be pretty compelling!

I'm guessing you haven't been following the Lightning launch closely, but Pro is sold out for 2022 MY. Expect MSRP to be the least you will pay for a Lightning for 2022 or 2023 MYY unless you're at one of the handful of dealers offering (very small) discounts. To make matters worse, many of the dealers offering discounts are in non ZEV states and are getting so few Lightning allocation as to be nearly unobtainable. My reservation was about 90 seconds after they opened and I'm not expecting an order invite in wave 3 (I was #3 in line at Chapman of Horsham, they got one order invite in wave 1 and I believe 0 in wave 2). With Pros gone the next logical choice is an ER Lariat. Nothing in between really makes sense.

400 miles is a pipe dream. Never going to happen. Unfinished software running in unrealistic conditions yields BS range estimates. Expect a few percent over rated at best. TFL's tow test on the R1T is a great example of this with almost 300 miles range predicted at 16% SoC IIRC.

to finish your comments viper.

totally agree with you. i'll need to see this with the Chevy and Ford before I could commit. Towing over mountain passes is something we do on the regular.

we drive the routes they are talking about on the regular.

I wonder if batteries are a big reason the Cybertruck is delayed...

The Chevy will cost you a whopping +$100K for the first year's units. Chevy already stated they were going to sell the upper trim first, which I think starts at a ridiculous $107K.

yea, so you can buy an electric Denali for the price of.... a Denali.

and the top end ford is 90+ as well...

and the top end cyber truck will be similar I am sure.

GM also said they are starting with the top end model and the fleet model.

why does GM get so much flac for the price and you forget that everyone else is in the same ball park?

Ford is catching plenty of hell for it as well. So many pissed off people who thought they'd be able to get into a big battery truck for like $60k. I don't think anyone expected that Rivian would end up looking like a bargain, but that's where we find ourselves now.

Well, Ford and GM do have their loyal redneck customers that will pay anything to get whatever is popular so they can keep up with their redneck neighbors. Now add to this idiots with more borrowed money than brains and I'm sure it'll be a winning situation--especially if you artificially keep inventory low of other products.

My town is full of white collar dudes driving Raptors and other F150 trims in the 70-80K range and that's before they start bolting shit onto them.

I've never really thought about it quite like that before, but that's exactly the perspective that a lot of buyers have! I know people who do this for cars, clothing, etc...they'll spend every last cent they have to buy into the bleeding-edge, most-popular gear available! I understand the drive...it's easy to make bad financial decisions & it's easy to be driven by what the crowd thinks, but man, I know a LOT of people who are paying $900+ a month for their vehicles who are not in a financial position to do so, all so that they can "feel" cool. It's the American way!

Auto manufacturers and the ad agencies they hire are excellent at parting people and their money - convincing people that they need to buy the land barge. The people of your town (and many others) would have been better off buying less vehicle and a cowboy hat.

I just want the base Pro to give a little more wiggle room for weekends in the summer.

I can fit 4 paddle boards in the Mach-E but it's awkward. And when we are done there's sand and water everywhere. Be nice to chuck them in the bed when done. Plus I don't have a factory hitch on Mach-E so hauling bikes is a pain in the ass. That was a major miss on Ford's part.

I got my order invite yesterday. I have to order by 3/31 or extend to next MY for the Pro. Shows 24+ weeks for delivery of any other model.

I’ll probably order the Lariat with ER battery. Haven’t committed yet.

Do they offer an option to get one installed? The Y didn't come with one initially, but Tesla offered it as an aftermarket option with integrated wiring harness. Would also give you the option to get a rack for your paddle boards.

Nothing from the factory. There's a company called Torklift in Seattle that does custom installs. Have to cut into the bumper and some of the fascia under the bumper to get it installed. Probably a couple grand and has a somewhat limited tongue weight (500lbs I think). It also messes with the rear sensors. So it's not ideal.

It's consumerism. It's why marketing and sales pay better than engineering and production.

Ford is a joke, maybe two. $70K starting price? For up to 230 miles range?

No, that's only for the Lariat edition. Base is $40,000 for 230 miles of range:

The pricing vs. features isn't entirely clear, but from what I gather:

* $40k Pro (230-mile range)
* $53k XLT (not sure if this is 230 or 300-miles) * $19.5k more 320-mile battery (same cost as a new Maverick truck lol)
* $68k Lariat (230-mile range but more goodies like a huge 15.5" touchscreen) * $10k more for 320-mile battery
* $78k Lariat Extended Range
* $91k Platinum (300-miles)

For reference, the absolute cheapest Tesla available right now is the Model 3 SR+ for $46k:

So the fact that you can get a 230-mile EV pickup truck is pretty amazing!

Ford has a 3-year backlog on the Lightning right now:

You are thinking manufacturer pricing--no such thing in the states. I was thinking dealer pricing, which I am probably dead-on.

At this point I don't know if I care that the credits will be out by the time I can get delivery. Even at 40k and my state $2500 incentive and no sales tax the Pro model seems like a steal.
