Pro's are now pushing like $56k. Up almost $16k over what they released at. I've had so many quirks with public charging I'm not going for a second EV. Probably just going to look at Ridgelines when used market gets a little less stupid and nab one of those. I've also been so burned by airlines over the last few months that I'm getting sick of dealing with them too. Want something more functional for longer drives.

I’m really surprised you would be willing to go back to ICE. I do get the charging frustrations, my wife took our Rivian from New Jersey to central Ohio for a two week trip. Compared to the Tesla experience it’s the wild Wild West. She never failed to charge, but it definitely requires far more knowledge and awareness than Tesla where you can essentially just plug in and know it will deliver charge at the best rate possible.

For now my solution to that is to just have at least one Tesla in the household, but Elon going crazy MAGA makes another Tesla purchase unlikely. Hopefully things will be improved by the time our Y needs replacing.

Btw if you want to drive a Rivian mine now lives in Battle Ground. It’s obviously very expensive compared to a Ridgeline, but it is just so fucking good.

Elon is MAGA? LOL. He took a safe space away from the alt-left. He's still left.

Yeah I don't really want to go back to ICE either, but I'm just struggling over here on the west coast if you aren't within a handful of miles from I-5. We traveled from Portland to Bend over Labor Day. I could get to Bend ok. Had about 60 miles of range left on my Extended Range Mach-E. Dropped family off at the hotel and took a 10 minute drive over to the EA station at the Walmart. 3/4 chargers down over labor day weekend. There was a line 3 car deep. Went back to the hotel and tried to go back again the next morning. Was now 2/4 available, but both were taken, was an extended range Lightning (the only one I've seen in the wild) that had an hour to get charged. So I scrambled and had to go to some public charging station that was a slow level 2. Spent 3 hours there while my family was stuck at the hotel just to get enough range to do some light travel to Smith Rock and some other close locations to Bend. It wasn't until later on Monday that I was finally able to get an available charge at the EA station for that trip. It sucked.

I've had issues going back and forth between Portland and Hood River where the EA station in Hood River was down and I rolled into Troutdale on electron vapor.

If I want to go to the coast I have to be very mindful what my trip looks like since there's only a Tesla station over there. I can do a basic trip there and back, but not much more than that.

And then if I ever dare traveling further east on I-84 it gets real spooky fast once you get past Hood River. Infrastructure just isn't there and I'm kind of sick of putting entire trips on hold trying to find a unicorn charging station.

I really want an EV but these constant price increases across the board are just making it more and more out of reach. I don't think I'll ever see myself actually own one unless I win the lotto or something.

That right there is the biggest reason I haven't made the leap to electric yet. I can fill up my car from empty in under 3 minutes at any gas station, and even if there's a line, it moves literally within minutes, and I can also just go to another gas station nearby. That's why I'm holding out for the Cybertruck. I'm hoping they'll boost it to the Roadster 2.0's 620-mile battery range!

On the electric car front, it's a shame we're dumping so many large batteries into such huge vehicles, instead of aiming for smaller vehicles that can get similar range with lower total wattage (I know that's a pipe dream, because everyone is a contractor that has a family of 8). That's only going to contribute to extended charge times at the limited number of public charge points, until public infrastructure can catch up.

Yep, it’s a joke. Some of these monstrosities end up having a bigger carbon footprint than a small efficient ICE-powered car. Of course if people actually drove small efficient cars (or god forbid walked, biked or took public transit) we wouldn’t need to be in such a rush to transition to EVs in the first place.

What I'd like to see is plugin gas-electric vehicles with smaller battery. Sorta a hybrid but rather than having the 2 drive trains everything is still full electric and it has a gas generator built in that can generate just enough power to keep the car driving and top up battery then shut off after. I think the Chevy Volt did this, but the concept never really took off. Given the high cost of batteries and the rarity of the minerals this seems like it would be the best of both worlds.

This already exists. They're called plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) - you can even choose from a few models today.

States jumped too fast in the west coast to ban ICE. They really needed to push for PHEV's to be a choice.

I really think PHEV'S are the right choice for *a lot* of people. 50 miles on battery alone covers a lot of daily commutes. Don't use a drop of gas on those trips. Lower emissions, less gas used, and you don't need high end charging for them. Then on the weekend you just go to hybrid mode and enjoy your first 40 miles on the house and fill up at a normal gas station.

There's a ton of room in this space that is ignored or addressed with shitty luxury options with poor range and cost 70k that check some corporate box for CAFE standards.

We need laws to help reduce the risk to car manufacturers to make them.

We could also just reform the CAFE standards to actually disincentivize the "light truck" category that everything is moving towards and incentive things falling back into smaller/lighter weight classes.

What I want is a mini convertible with a 350mile range.
An EV mini convertible would be the most fun to drive!

If we are concerned about actually reducing any sort of footprints or energy independence, niche vehicle types aren't the answer. A 2 seat electric convertible is a toy/second car for most people.

I agree on that front. However, CAFE standards currently have perverse incentives of having very strict fuel economy standards for sedans and sedan-height cars. It's part of the reason behind the explosion in crossovers: raise the body a few inches, and now your wagon or hatchback is a "light truck", and you get to use the looser standards.

Minis are pretty ubiquitous in the UK.

4th best selling car.

That would be the BMW i3. That was straight up an EV that you could option with a small 600cc moped engine as a gas backup that only generated electricity. The problem is on gas it didn't get great MPGs, think 35mpg, and on electric you are carrying around extra weight so also less effceient than the pure EV version. They are an interesting car if you want to watch some youtubes on them. The rest of them are more or less just hybrid with extra big batteries you can charge up off the grid. They all have the problem of hauling around two drivetrains so weight/more crap to break. I really like the volt btw and is on my list as possible next car.

We've owned/leased a few i3s. The only thing that ever gave us any trouble was the REX. I skipped it when I bought my 2019 i3s last year and the car handles much better not lugging the weight around. Bonus that I don't have to get it smogged since we're back in CA again.

RAV4 Prime:

42-mile battery + gas. My buddy got one & it's fantastic! The battery goes 0 to 60 in 5.4 seconds: (my Ecoboost Mustang is 5.1 seconds!)

My buddy just got one & took me out for a spin:

* He got the 320-mile version
* Got it used with 12k miles for $30k off lol
* imo, this is the best EV on the market, followed by the Mach-E

Notes:

* Unless you know the grill, it just looks like an ICE truck. No risk of social criticism like what comes with a Cybertruck haha!
* Soooooo quiet. So smooth. So fast. A full second faster than the Ecoboost Mustang (I'm jelly!).
* It just feels like what a car "should" be, if that makes sense: all the details are just right, everything works as expected, etc.

If I were buying an EV today, this would be my pick! btw, the physical knob in the center screen is genius:

The local Ford dealer is having its annual "Test drive any vehicle, get a free turkey" promotion. I screwed up and test drove an F150 Lightning Lariat. OMFG! I love that truck. Well appointed...nearly all the bells and whistles Ford offers on an F150, looks decent, Star white metallic tri-coat paint...nearly identical to my current 2019 F150 Lariat...but WOW! Instant acceleration...from a dead stop to 70 MPH in the blink of an eye...handles VERY well...better than my current truck, which handles like a large sports car. I choked at the nearly $85,000 price tag...but didn't say no. I'm thinking about it. They low-balled me a bit on the trade-in on my 2019...If I can get that up a ways...maybe. I dunno...it's a LOT of money.

If I were in the market for electric, the Ford is about my only option. I need a real truck, and I'm not sure the Rivian qualifies. It doesn't do anything stupid. It's just a truck that happens to be electric. Pretty much ideal for me.

I think the R1T is a good option for people who don't actually need to haul much on a regular basis. Which is most people buying trucks. Upside of the Ford is that unless you get close to it and know what to look for it just looks like a normal truck which is surely appealing to some.
