Electric RC car speeds

I know quite a few people here are into RC stuff. So I was wondering what types of speeds you see from RC cars. I know you can go gas which is really fast, but what would be the top speed of an electric, and how about the average speed of one?


I saw a cheap one at rat shack(i know, its probablly not high quality, but its cheap) and it was rated for 1800ft/min, which if my math is correct(there are 5280 feet in a mile, right?)thats about 20.5MPH. That seems pretty quick to me, but I don't know.

20 mph is fast for a toy rc

my bros friend's nitro losi and team associated trucks did 45mph+

but i heard electrics are really fast if you spend the $$$

you can get a CEN CT5 that goes 73.4MPH but its gas. only costs around 349 with a nitro Starter pack

Yeah I am not really ready to spend hundreds of dollars for a RC that can go as fast as my real car, LOL. That would be sweet though

Electric RC car speeds are HIGHLY variable. Are you looking at a basic toy to fart around with, or an actual hobbiest model, with real shocks and everything?

Well the car at radio shack is like 50 bucks or maybe less since some stores have it on sale. So anything in that range. Is 20 MPH good for that price, could I find something better in that price range? Mainly just something to fart around with, but if its slow and crappy it will probablly bore me quickly.

if your anything over 15 years old, go to a real hobby shop and get one of the kits, either ready to run or one you start from scratch. Team Losi or Team associated are 2 companies that are good. also check out http://www.rcuniverse.com/index.cfm
that will get you going in the right direction. trust me you will get a whole lot more appreciation for the car if you build it.

I have a Nitro RC touring car that will do over 40mph out of the box. It has a 2 speed transmission and AWD, I have a hard time finding a large enough and smooth enough surface to really let it fly though.

Edit-It cost me just shy of $300. I have a few 200mm bodies I've made for it (that's one of the fun parts).

I have a Nikko Evo lancer, does at least 15mph

toy cars 15-20 top speed is impressive (mine cost $30 on WOOT.com)

kit/hobby RC cars can top out in the 40's I think

Just not sure I want to spend several hundred dollars on a car even if it will go 40MPH, cause as one person said, there just aren't many places to use something like that, and I would probablly break it. Now a pro RC Helo or airplane, that I might consider

Agreed, the stuff at radio shack doesn't hold a candle to what a real r/c car or truck can do in terms of speed, performance or fun.

Yeah but where do you run an RC car that can do 40+mph? And I just want somethign to play with, not to race. If I was gonna spend a lot of money like I said, it would probablly be on a plane or helo.

1800 ft/second is supersonic. So that's can't be right.

Anyway, I used to have RC cars in the late 80's, and I had one that went over 60 mph. It was a 1/12th scale Newman Porsche 956. It was an on-road car. I put in the biggest pinion I had, used a 7-cell battery pack, and used a 50,000 rpm Big Daddy drag motor. It became airborne occasionally. Looked like a damn missile going down the street.

Good catch, thats per minute, my math was right, I just used the wrong time denomination there.

Yeah the fastest I've ever heard of for electric is 60mph. Anything from Losi or Associated will be fast. HPI somewhat, same with Bolink. I use to have a Bolink pan car that went pretty fast, enough to completely smash my nice Lexan bodies everytime I got in an accident

OP, if you're looking for a chopper, the little indoor Dragonfly for $27 over in the Hot Deals forum is pretty fun. I'm having a blast with mine!

i have a 1/8 scale buggy nitro powered. 4IS, and AWD.......................This thing flys, took me a bit to really learn to drive it since it was so damn fast and can flip just like ** if your not carful when you turn.

The popular cars were all off-roaders like the JR-X2 or the RC-10. 60 mph for them was pretty extreme. Also, they were all 1/10th scale cars.

The on-road cars weren't quite as popular but were much faster. 60 mph for mine is a low estimate. It was insanely fast and completely uncontrollable with that motor/battery pack. That car originally shipped with a 5 cell battery pack and a low-power version of the "plain" mabucci 540 motor, intended for longer battery life. Me, being the tinkerer that I am, bought a 7 cell pack and a drag-racing motor. Also, being a 1/12th scale car meant that it was smaller, so with the same motor/battery it had less drag.

I fiddle with the Radio Shak stuff because Im poor and my uncle can get em cheap, but anyways fastest Ive gotten one of my electric trucks to go was about 35km/h using a 7.2 volt battery.Neighbors claim to have gotten thier C6 racing edition over 40km on AAA batteries...
