I know this was posted already but if you are lucky you can when you head down to Target look for a Blue and Yellow Magna retail at $99 for $23. Got one yesterday. Definitely worth it.

Took the electroshock to the mountain bike trails at one of our local parks, where they have Trails, Mounts, Logs, Steps and such setup. Almost killed meself, that Manga needs quite a bid of adjustment before attempting a trail. The chains came off 5 or 6 times. The front wheel was not tighten, so it almost came off. Brakes started rubbing really bad.
Just a Warning, (but what you want for $25.00 buckaroos)

good bike to give to a student to ride to school, though. especially broke college students on a tight budget. 20 boxes of Kraft Mac & Cheese, or a mountain bike... tough call.

you can get way more then 20 boxes of mac and cheese for $23, closer to 70 if you find a good deal

You called that one right! My brakes need a lot of pressure to come to a quick stop. Also the gears dont change real smooth. Anyone know how to adjust them?

Anyone get the deal on the concord? Who was this bike made by and how much better is it. I would love to find one of them. Is it aluminum?

If you're having problems with the bike take it back to Target and make them fix it. You have 90 days from when you bought it to return it or have them fix any problems.

good luck getting anyone at target who can assemble/adjust/fix a bike any better than your average 6 year old girl...

your best bet, unless you know bike maintenance yourself (or want to learn, there are tons of DIY guides on the net) is to float the extra $30 and take it to a bike shop and have them adjust it and make sure it is assembled properly.

i know that peeps around here GASP at the thought of SPENDING MONEY... but believe me, if you take that thing home from target, leave it as is, there's a good chance you'll end up with a hospital bill that is quite a bit more than $30. my best guess is that target also has all kinds of liability disclaimers about bikes that they sell, knowing that they don't really employ people who are qualified to assemble bikes.

0.02, yours, free for the taking.

Target employees aren't the ones that put the bikes together or make the adjustments. They bring in someone from Huffy (if I remember correctly) that does that for them. Granted, they could care less about putting the bikes together properly as they get paid by how many bikes they get done.

No offense but I think many bike stores will turn their noses up at servicing department-store bikes.

When I worked in a shop we more or less refused to service them because they are inherently somewhat unsafe (as the frames and wheels are really not ready for prime time even riding around town and invariably dangerous off-road), and the shop owner was leery of being held liable if one fell apart after being serviced in our shop. Anyone who tries to take a Huffy/Murray/Magna out on a real trail had better make sure his life insurance is in order!

Hence the name "ElectroShock".

I posted my big old rant in the previous thread and I'm not going to repeat it! If you MUST buy one, by all means find a compotent bicycle shop and pay them to do a proper tune-up on it, for your own saftey and satisfaction. This will involve SPENDING MONEY but it is worth it.

For more details on what comprises a "tune-up," you may refer to the thread I linked to.

Anyway you put it... $25 for a bike + $30 for a good tuning up = $55.00 is still a good deal. Grants its not a $800 cannondale, but for $55.00 you can get around and have some fun every soo often. (must make sure my life insurance is paid up...)

Tee: I completely agree with you... it is hard to find a shop that will work on crap bikes.

carmann: so a 16 year old kid that works for Huffy assembles them instead of one that works for target..

and i have to agree with several people who have said this...
if you must ride one of these bikes, keep it on the sidewalk, or in your driveway

for me, i'll stick to my Treks, thank you have a nice day.

I'm going to purchase a bike real soon, but I'd rather put that $23 (plus applicable state taxes) toward a real bike. I'm a tall guy too (6'4&quot so I'd never fit on a kiddie bike that'd fall apart after a day's ride. Good post though... Everyone needs a chance to buy something cheap every now and them to remind us that you get what you pay for. Happy Trails!

Don't let these brand-name baffoons scare you away from this bike. It is built like a tank, and is as heavy as one, which is part of the reason for the low price. Making sure it is put together correctly before you ride it is a no-brainer, as is knowing its limitations. These snobs that say you can't ride anything but a certain brand name or you will get hurt are not considering how this bike will likely be ridden. Hey! Wake up! It's a $99 retail bike for Gods sake! We will not be doing time trials down Pikes Peak!

I agree, these kinds of purchases are personal decisions. Get the right equipment for your situation.
I got one of these which was in immaculate pristine shape at my local Target and gave it to my 12 YO daughter. She is happy, I know she wont be using it for anything radical, because that's just not how she is. I have a Trek and a Nishiki and know something about how bikes go together. I checked this one out and it was well put together, and everything that was supposed to be tight indeed was tight.
So come on people, look at it for what it is: a good deal on a cheap bike! Of course be careful, don't do anything stupid and then blame it on someone at the store. I know we are not all adults on this forum, but lets most of us try to act that way OK?

*sigh* It's hard to not come off as a snob when recommending a decent bicycle over a mass-merchandise bicycle. As a mechanic with over ten years' experience and over $8000 worth of my own tools of the trade, it is very stressful for me to even walk through the bicycle area of Target and other such places. Seeing a brake pad finger-loose, ready to dive into the spokes and lock the wheel on an unsuspecting future customer, is enough to make me very angry, and I could go on and on with both saftey and functionality problems that are blatantly obvious to a professional mechanic. :|

If the people who build those bicycles did a good job, they would still be low-quality, but at least they would be halfway safe. As it is, I have never seen anything other than hasty "stick-the-parts-on-it" work from any mass merchant in my city, and I am speaking with vast experience, because the last bicycle shop where I work did contract repairs for Sears. We serviced all the Sears bicycles in greater Spokane that were sold to a customer who bought the Service Agreement. Naturally, we also serviced every other make under the sun, whether of shop quality or not.

I am not a snob. Many of our customers were people who'd lost their licenses due to DUIs, or who were mentally handicapped and on limited income. I never put anyone down for coming in with their Huffy, or any other mass merchant bike, because I knew they couldn't afford a better one, any more than I can afford a decent car on my pathetic income. We do the best we can for them, oftentimes sneaking in some "mercy repairs" without charging them, just out of sympathy for someone who needs someone to look out for them. Properly adjusted, their bikes were usually capable of serving their needs adequately. At the same time, if a quality used bicycle is within reach, it will give safer, more-reliable service and have some trade-in value at the end of its life.

So if you need a utility bicycle, at least get it tuned up by a reputable bicycle shop, for saftey and functionality.

I think what most of you BIKE EXPERTS here aren't taking into consideration is that most people will only use their bikes for a casual ride around the block. For that type of riding there is no problem with this bike at all.
