MATTHEWS, NC (WBTV) - Two parents are facing drug charges after their child took their drugs to school and told a school officer his parents were breaking the law.

WBTV is not releasing the names of the parents or the name of the school to protect the child's identity.

The 11-year-old student is in 5th grade at a an elementary school in Matthews. Police say he brought his parents' marijuana cigarettes to school when he reported them.

Matthews Police say he reported his parents after a lesson about marijuana was delivered by a police officer who is part of the D.A.R.E. program, which teaches kids about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

"Even if it's happening in their own home with their own parents, they understand that's a dangerous situation because of what we're teaching them," said Matthews Officer Stason Tyrrell. That's what they're told to do, to make us aware."

Tyrrell says the town's D.A.R.E. officer spends time at each of the three elementary schools in Matthews teaching kids to make the right choice when it comes to drugs.

Police arrested the child's 40-year-old father and 38-year-old mother on Thursday.

Both were charged with two misdemeanor counts each of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

They were not jailed and were released on a written promise to appear in court.

"I don't give drugs to my kids," the father told us when we went to his house.

When we asked him how his kid got ahold of his drugs, he replied, "That's no one's business."

Police say both the 11-year old and a sibling have been removed from the parents' house by social services. Police say they are staying with relatives.

Reminds me of Orwell's 1984... would any of you even think about doing this when you were 11?

I bet he's sorry he did that now, just because of the effect it's going to have on his family.

This actually really pisses me off. Who's fucking bright idea was it to let authority figures(police) into schools? I have no problem with it in principle, but at least in this case it is obvious the authority figure was being manipulative. Otherwise, why would the kid have waited until now?

I will not let my children participate in nonsense like DARE. What a fucking crock of shit.

I knew what marijuana was well before 11. I also sat through DARE and smiled, but even then I had the presence of mind to realize the whole thing was complete and utter nonsense.

Edit: They REMOVED the children from their home?! WHAT THE FUCK? Because the parents smoked marijuana?? How can they do that?!

This is mind blowing. Yeah, I bet the kid is going to grow up having a real high opinion of police and drug laws after being in foster care. How can they just take them away like that? I thought it had to be demonstrated that the children were being neglected.

For fuck's sake, my Dad was busted for growing marijuana when I was in the 6th grade. He plead to a reduced sentence, did some community service and that was that. Social Services never entered into the picture.. which is the way it should be. I was a happy, provided for child. I would rather my Dad have smoked marijuana than drink alcohol any day of the week.

It's really upsetting that it is taking so long to put an end to the endless torture of good citizens because of a fucking plant.

I didn't have to. My parents weren't drug addicts.

if this kid is being removed from his house for "marijuana cigarettes" then anyone who has REAL cigarettes or alcohol should just boot their kids out too.

Just to be consistent.

Retort: BUT ALCOHOL AND CIGARETTES AREN'T ILLEGAL
Retort: But why are they not legal?
Retort: BECAUSE THEY'RE BAD
Retort: But why are they bad?
Retort: BECAUSE THEY'RE ILLEGAL

repeat.

No, they're bad because they are bad. Something can be bad and legal.

Just because alcohol and tobacco are legal, marijuana should be?

lol foster care. Have fun with that.

My piece of shit neighbors had foster kids because the government gave some kind of kick back if you had foster kids. Basically the idea is that you take care of a kid, the government pays you some amount of money, you spend only a small fraction of that on the kid (ie feed him rice and give him used clothes) then pocket the rest. There are some genuinely good foster parents out there and some of my family members have been through foster care, but there are just as many shit bag families that need to be killed immediately.

The anti-drug people won't be happy until every kid is in foster care. Your dad drank 1 beer a couple years ago? Oh shit. We better get you out of that situation right now!
