Post your system specs please. How old. Any overclocking? If you are certain it is your mobo then it must be the chipset cooler unless you are running a very loud heat sink fan.

If you think it's the fan, only way to find out is to stop the fan from spinning while it's on by stopping it with your finger at the center (not the fins). A fast speed fan though, I'd be careful..

Could be capacitor hum/whine the cause is all down to the interaction of the PSU and the motherboard, switching either of them will probably get rid of it if it is.

Stop the fans with a pencil and see if the noise goes away.

Maybe you should give it lyrics.

Sorry, could not resist. Now if you can hear a hum from another room that is really bad! What exactly does it sound like?

So does it do yankee doodle?

Seriously though, you're going to have to be more specific. What makes you sure it is the mobo? In my experience humming usually comes from a bad fan or bad HDD positioning causing awkward vibration.

Many are willing to help you, but you must offer much more info.

Full build spec and age of system is a start. First make sure it is not a fan. The PSU's fan
can be blocked with a non-conductive probe, then the rig booted. The rest can be stopped
with a finger as suggested.

Are any of the caps bulged or venting.? When you press on the toroidal coils does the sound
change.? (Google images) Have any heat sinks been removed from board chips in a rough
manner.? (CPU excluded) If it's a P4 board you may have to change it out. It does not
happen often but they are known to be talkative.

Heh, Thanks for all the input.

I removed the casing, jossled the hdd and then shoved a pencil in the motherboards fan. The fan is mounted on a heatsync. Can i remove the fan? or should i purchase a new one and put up with the humming untill the new one arrives.. my parents have guests coming to stay soon so i need to eliminate the problem so i dont wake the guests up with the constant noise...

My Build is quite old. as at the time of orginal consturction i was broke.

So my motherboard is around 5 -6 years old.. it is a M848A (V2.1)

- thanks

If the fan is mounted on a heatsync, it is there for a reasona and disconnecting it could damager whatever it is cooling.

When you stopped the heatsink fan did the noise stop? If so then you just need to replace the fan, or the entire heatsink, swapping out the fan would probably be easiest.
