You don't have to do non-combat tasks. There are people in this thread who've jumped right into combat with the shartbox stock Sidewinder and earned 100's of thousands of credits.

Start at a Nav Beacon to get the hang of it.

Then look for a system with a ringed planet (metalic rings are good, but any will do). Fly out to the ringed planet and look for Resource Extraction Sites and shoot wanted targets there.

It's cake, and it's fun.

I use KB/Mouse because my brain am cannot joystick. I probably just haven't spent enough time with it to get good at it, but I'm pretty good with kb/m so don't give up. The kb/m combo absolutely is viable long-term.

Lies! HOTAS or bust!

Also, exploring or bounty hunting runs (either at a RES like TC says or at the Nav Beacons by the (main) star) are the quickest route to riches at the very start. I'm definitely glad they buffed the bounty-hunting rewards. My modest Eagle kills are netting me around $20k per kill.

Have I mentioned I find trading incredibly boring?

See I find bounty hunting boring, I can't do it more than 30 minutes at a time. What I find fun is the progression of making money and getting better stuff. When I trade though I don't typically just do the same run over and over but move around and explore a lot.

Oh...I know. I did that every reset on the Beta. Every. Reset. Got to my 'Conda twice.

Have I mentioned I hate trading?

D:

I couldn't trade enough for two condas. Not without the pre-nerf rare tactic. hundreds of millions at 500k or 1.2mil per trade run? No. Just... no. D:

Same, I like the progression of buying better ships and parts. However combat in elite is incredibly satisfying, gliding between asteroids, managing power, countermeasures, and shunting heat is an incredibly beautiful and deadly dance that's quite addicting. Can't wait for my Viper again.

I should also mention the positional sounds are great with the Oculus Rift setup. With the run I had last night, I could hear the Fed eagles firing off as I tried to weave around trying to avoid hitting them while not letting my target get away. Truly awesome experience, even if I know that Elite is still mostly a hollow experience.

I just made almost 100k on rares. Not as good as hunting for $/time but it was a good break.

I'm replacing my hauler with a cobra. The 21ly jump on the hauler is really nice, but the 8 cargo limit is horrible.

Anyone at the Beta Sculpturis party tonight? If you thought trading was boring, head down over there and see how much fun trading can really be lol. I made 10 mill in about an hour until some jerk spammed thousands of canisters and crashed the server haha.

How in the world do you make 10 million in an hour without cheating? I couldn't even do that in my Type 9.

Seeking luxories in a high tech system. (performance enchancers)

The system is in a state of economic boom.

Yeah, I've seen those ships buying various things like guns and jewelry but I can never find those items for sale for anything less than about 6/7ths the value that those ships are buying at.

This 10 million per hour, I do not understand. I mean, holy exploit or something, batman.

If the rare commodities market was nerfed for much MUCH MUUUUCH less, I can't see this not getting "rebalanced" as well.

If the ships seeking luxories orbits the same planet as athe station selling performance enchancers. You can do a round trip is 2-3 minutes. With 500 cargo in a T9 and 1000credit per tonne profit that gves between 10 and 15 million per hour. It quickly dries up tho.

In Beta S there is a seeking luxuries dealer which is 9 Mm away from the station, which is selling performance enhancers for rock bottom price at high boom supply. It has been heavily traded and has not yet dried up. Last night a server admin told everyone to clear out of the area though because it became too congested and laggy so FD is surely aware of the issue and may shut it down.

Seeking luxuries only buy performance enhancers as far as I know, I've never seen one buy anything else. They usually buy them for 7500 cr/t and it counts as smuggling. It is not an exploit, it just happens to be a lucky coincidence to have a dealer so close to a station in economic boom.

Elite Dangerous is *the* showcase for OR IMHO. Tracking and movement are nearly perfect (full range of motion) provided you can keep the FPS up for it. Elite also keeps track of joystick/throttle input and plays it on the character model very well (similar to SC), so I've definitely had a couple of moments where I actually feel there. I just need that chair for completeness (see my previous post in this thread).

I can't use the OR when I'm playing Elite Dangerous: The Excel Sim (i.e. trading), but for combat it's just awesome.

Headphones for CV should be removable/optional. Otherwise I'll be hacking them out, not giving up my DT770s for nothin.

What sorta specs do you need for a flawless framerate (thinking 1440p for the retail release of OR)? Hoping my 3570k/GTX970 will be fine.

My setup gives 75-175FPS depending on location in 2560*1440 with everything maxed. 75 is inside stations.

I normally play with vsync tho.

OK - read the entire thread. I have never played anything like this game- watched EVE a few times when a friend was playing. Watched a few Utubes- very cool!! IS there a monthly fee to play? just how hard and/or expensive will it be to play? Game= $60 plus ??. Plus I will need to purchase a stick as I have only played with K /M and I will need all the help I can get.

Specs in my sig can run the 1080P OR at a very smooth refresh (75fps) with a couple of settings turned down to medium (think it's shadows and one other). It's actually quite demanding.

OR 3D is quite a bit more demanding than just 1440p. My rig has no problem with fps @ 1440p with all settings maxed, but trying that with the OR pushes the fps below 75 at times without turning down a couple of settings.

No monthly fees. Check the resources provided (YT videos TC & I have posted, the forums) for difficulty. Stick is NOT required, but I *heavily* recommend it if you're seriously interested in the game (i.e. play it first, and if Elite Dangerous isn't the bee's knees for you and you have no other games that would benefit from a joystick, obviously don't splurge on one; normal disclaimers on budget, etc).

You can run the OR without 3D, correct? I don't have normal stereoscopic vision so 3D is useless for me.

No? How would you render a VR headset with two lenses without 3d? That doesn't make any sense. Besides, even if you are stereoblind you can still use the Oculus Rift, your lack of depth perception will be no different compared to normal vision. If you just want head-tracking and don't care about VR then get TrackIR instead.

I'm used to 3D stuff appearing as fuzzy double images. I haven't used a stereoscopic 3d system, so I am not aware of the differences.

I thought normally you'd just have two 960x1080 displays. I don't understand why that'd be more difficult to render than 2560x1440.

Well yeah, but most of the time those performance enhancers are sold for 6k or so.

Even in the same system... 10 million? Christ....
