So you really like the HOTAS over keyboard and mouse? I'd really rather not switch cause I usually keep my joystick put away and I like all the keys at my fingertips when using the KB+M (they're still there if you have a joystick but you can't get to them as fast). But I may give it a shot at least.
I rebound some keys from the default. I moved throttle to mousewheel up/down and set it to 10% increments instead of continuous. I also changed mouse X-axis to yaw instead of roll and set roll to Q/E. I moved thrust up/down to W/S as well, and instead of just J for FSD I set hyperspace to R and supercruise to F. I like this setup WAY better and find maneuvering my ship much, much easier (though I am also just getting the hang of it more).
For missions I took a bounty one and some other delivery one or something, but for the latter I kept getting refused docking at the place so I just aborted the mission. The bounty one I couldn't find any ships to shoot where I was and it was getting late so I just aborted that too. I'll have to try again; I'm definitely liking the game.
I can manage with a keyboard and mouse in this and bf4, but I don't think you can really compete with someone with hotas. Took me about 2 days to muscle memory it, now I can't live without. It feels more natural, and no way I'd be able to use 5-6 keys at the same time on kb and mouse.
