The Viper > Cobra in combat every day of the week. The Cobra is marginally better at everything else with the exception of excelling considerably in jump range. If you're going to upgrade from the Adder and you want a ship for combat, there's simply no justification for buying the Cobra over the Viper. The Viper is very significantly cheaper and so are all the parts. It's far superior in combat, to boot.

I really like how the ships all have a unique sound. The ASP sounds like some kind of prop-driven fighter. MREEEEEEOOOOOOOWOWRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR :awe:

I don't care if he's trolling me or not. He's being an ass so he gets me being an ass in response. I handle trolling just fine. With me, you get what you give. The guy has shown repeatedly in this thread and in others that he's perfectly willing to be a complete ass to me and being polite to him doesn't seem to satisfy him, so I don't mind roughly putting him in his place if it shuts him up. I've talked to mods about it and they don't seem to care anymore because they don't do anything about it which is fine with me because I'd rather stand up for myself instead of running like a little bitch to the mods like a kid running to mommy. I have no problem giving him the same garbage in return that he offers me.

So...you're saying you two have man crushes for each other? Get a room.

Also, I love the sound design for this game. And I hate trading.

Got a rank progression mission. 1 1/2 days to take down a guy. Thing is, I can't kill anacondas. I'm just hoping he isn't one. He's also 83ly away from my viper which can jump 40ly on a full tank.

Gen. Something. I seem to recall him being in an adder. I also got another mission but killing gen. Khan (hmmmmm) Can I abandon the one 90ly away for the one 10ly away without rep loss?

Don't abandon those missions. It hurts.

If you're at the stage where you're being told to kill a general, you might see the same "go kill General _____" mission over and over if you dock at different stations.

As soon as you destroy one of them and turn the mission in, all the rest of the mirror missions that you have all magically disappear and you progress in the rank chain.

Don't abandon the one farther away, just go kill one of them and turn it in.

I was playing Open Play for about 2 hours earlier and it was working great! I racked up about 160k credits from bounties using my Viper. I went into a place to dock to sell some cargo and turn my bounties in using my 100% hull ship with full shields. I somehow blew up the inside the Orbis station for no reason; nothing collided/hit me... I rage quit but I'll give it another go... I was gonna buy a Cobra with that cash

I'm just gonna give up Open Play until the devs iron the game out because I seem to keep getting screwed over unless I play Solo.

Also, those bulletin board missions for assassinating a high-value targer for ~180k are really difficult for me as they can usually 1 shot me with a cannon; breaking an important module rendering me helpless. My last attempt at a high value assassination had me entering silent running to hide; since my thrusters died. Had to self destruct anyways however....

HOLY MOSES.

I'm just reading through the Frontier newsletter.

Name New Yembo's Starport
One of the first Community Goals introduced in Elite: Dangerous 1.1 was the ‘Starport Supplies Test.’ Thanks to nearly 5,000 commanders who shipped 8,150,000 tonnes of materials to the nearby Yembo system, the construction of a brand new starport has begun in HIP 101110 "New Yembo", where it can be found in its unfinished state right now.

MORE THAN 8 MILLION TONS!! Holy BALLS! That's 1650 tons per player on average. That's CRAZY.

Aw come on! I was fighting in a conflict zone and all of a sudden everyone turned red on my HUD. All the CMDRs turned against me when we had been fighting for the federation together. Anything I did that can do that, or did it glitch?

Same thing just happened. All turned hostile. 300k lost today, along with 100k of bonds and the mission.

I'm still bounty hunting but slowly getting tired of this income pace. I should make more credits, I wonder how SLU feels about trading.

I just trade for 30-60 minutes at a time while listening to music or the news in the background. That way I don't burn out and after a week or two I'll have some serious bank.

Oh man that sucks. My son and I were nervous about losing 10k worth of cargo last night(our biggest haul to date). I can't imagine the feeling of losing 400k.:|

I made a mistake, crashing my Type 7 with something like 3.8 million in cargo.

It happens. Don't be scared, though, have fun. Take risks! It's a game.

Oh yeah we have a good time playing. He's showing me things like better trading routes and how to work the commodities. He even tweaked my galaxy map for me so it's a lot easier to use now. We don't play very often though. Once every couple weeks is about it.

Hey I was going to ask you since you seem more up to speed with the game. Did the laser cannons on the entry level Sidewinder get nerfed in the latest patch? It seems like we were able to fend off pirates better before the patch.

The latest patch notes can be found in the Patch Notes subforum. I'm not sure when the last time you played was (so not sure how many patches you received all at once), but I don't think they've been changed. Just in case...

Here's the thread from the 1.1.05 patch that came on the 19th. There's no mention of weapon modifications.

Here's the thread from 1.1.04 patch, still no mention of weapons changes.

Here's the thread from 1.1.03 patch, still no mention of weapons changes.

Here's the thread from 1.1.02 patch, still no mention of weapons changes.

This is the thread for the mega 1.1 patch. Here, I have a couple questions...

"Rebalanced shield strengths at different pip levels to make those levels useful"

I don't know if NPCs even use pips (I can see Frontier doing that, based on the NPC's combat rank, like how they do some low combat rank ships with flat out no shields at all). If there's some kind of system in place for NPC ships to use pips, then this MIGHT be something to consider. Wild conjecture on my part, at this point.

"Don't just consider combat rank when determining AI rank"

I don't know what all this entails, but apparently now the AI takes more into account than just the combat rank.

I went through and read the patch again line-by-line to make sure I didn't miss anything. Other than these, which are both really long shots, I don't see anything relating to the Sidewinder or it's stock weaponry stats that should have changed. :-\

Anyone use a PS4 controller for this game? How is it?

I've been playing on an Xbox One controller, which is basically the same experience. Works great! You will be short a couple buttons, so don't stray too far away from a keyboard.

This game supports gamepads impressively well.

Anyone here trade within the same system? I've been traveling 1100LS back and forth trading metals. I sold my mining laser, shield, and refinery to make my Adder a freighter; and just sold that for a Cobra! With this giant fuel tank I'm going to explore a lot more and do a little pirating.

I've seen this strange bug happen a few times on Open Play and Solo where when an AI is leaving a Coriolis type station, they start shooting, causing the station to blow up their ship. Pretty funny hearing loud explosions and gunfire echoing about while docking/shopping.

The AI are made to make the same mistakes that players make. Some AI smuggle items in and get caught. Some AI loiter over pads. Some AI loiter in the station when they're supposed to be leaving. Some AI have some sort of bounty or are hated by the faction.

Just don't get caught in the crossfire, it hurts :awe:

If you want to use a controller but don't want to have to reach for the keyboard, consider paying $8 or $9 for a program called Voice Attack. If you have a mic, you can speak phrases that the program will translate into specific key presses. You can create your own commands and even create your own feedback.

With a little customization, mine is configured to have R2D2 parrot back a unique confirmation for each voice command I issue. :awe:

I picked up an Empire rank progression mission to take out some guy, so I slapped some weapons on my Asp and traded a few other modules to make her combat worthy. The guy happened to be in a clipper. I was a little rusty, because I haven't done combat since the practice sessions before starting the actual game, but he was pretty easy.

It gave me an itch to go ahead and outfit a combat vessel. Only reason I haven't yet is cause I have been focused on profits. Is an eagle worth using at all or should I just skip to a viper?

Well, the eagle is smaller and therefore harder to hit, but it's actually slower than the Viper and has one less weapon and none of them are class 2 weapons.

Think of the Eagle as a Tie Fighter. Fast, extremely maneuverable, cheap as sin, but paper thin. That price tag is the trade-off. It's pocket change to entirely fit out an Eagle properly.

It's entirely up to you. There's one pilot in my wing who prefers the Eagle over every other ship but most of the rest of us prefer the Viper between it and the Eagle.
