Have fun. I do find the Adder quite limiting with poor outside visibility, but it is quite a good explorer. Personally, I was never able to get over the cockpit visibility. But if you really enjoy the Adder, I'm sure she'll get you there. There's CMDRs in Sidewinders out there; LOL.

Yeah, the canopy never really bothered me. Feels more "shipish" if that makes sense. It is even less cumbersome with the Vive since I can lean forward for a better look whenever I want.

Thanks for all the ship suggestions. I hope to bring back some decent coin for a new ship and will keep these ideas in mind. I find exploring much more interesting wearing an HMD than I have before, so the future is good for me to keep playing Elite for a while.

Quick update, I'm already about 750LY out. Just now starting to find some undiscovered planets around stars that were missed by others (thank you ADS). Hopefully soon I'll start finding whole undiscovered systems. Had a brief scare where I came across about 5 unscoopable stars in a row. That put me under 1/3 fuel after my next jump which is into my discomfort zone. I'd ideally rather not get under half and if I can I refuel at every star. Luckily the next star was scoopable and I have been carrying on my merry way.

Don't forget you can limit the map to only scoopable stars! It won't change your route, but it'll let you choose one that is scoopable if you're low.

Always remember economic mode and KGBFOAM if you're low.

Thanks. That's usually my "oh shit" plan when it gets alarmingly low. I do usually have to look up KGBFOAM as I can never remember it in the moment. Maybe now that I'm picking it up again it'll stick.

I do wish the nav computer would retain my route between logons.

Fixed with VoiceAttack. Created a command that types in the full system waypoint for me.

Now about 1500LY out and well into fully unexplored systems, so I'm slowing down. Doing some SRV driving, collecting materials, and enjoying the vistas. Good times.

Progress has definitely been slow. Not much time the last several days, and I've been going full on completionist on scanning. I'm over 2000LY into the trip now (not sure the exact amount) and the view is definitely becoming noticeably different. Full speed ahead!

Now over 3000LY out. Come across some interesting planet combinations along the way. Decided to set her down for the "night."

It's unfair to call Elite "No Man's Sky on steroid" when it's been around for two years now while NMS hasn't come out yet.

That being said, they do have similar features. While NMS is very fiction oriented with an artistic style to it, Elite tries to be a full sim. Elite has:

  • 1:1 scale galaxy. Planets are appropriately sized and the appropriate distance between them and their stars and moons.
  • 400 billion+ star systems, just like our real galaxy. Real astronomical data was used for stars we know enough about and procedural generation designed to mimic real life was used for the rest of the galaxy. Real life locations can be visited, such as nebulas and even the super massive black hole at the center of the galaxy Sagitarrius A*
  • Trading, bounty hunting, exploring, mining, smuggling, etc

This video covers it pretty well:

It works well enough you could say. Though, I don't think you'd want to do dual sticks in Elite anyway. You can have everything from full reverse to full forward on the throttle or toggle between reverse and forward with a button. A lot of your time is spent with the throttle full forward travelling between locations that unless you have something setup as a traditional throttle it would get old having to hold the stick forward for long periods. Dual stick is great for combat, but with Elite's flight model it is less so and there's so much more to do than combat that's interesting. I don't really care for Elite's combat at all anymore after getting used to SC. I don't even have a weapon mounted right now.

Gamepad is decent, HOTAS is king in Elite. M/KB jockeys do still exist, but are fewer and further in between since gimbaled weapons have targeting computers.

Thanks a lot for this insightful post, appreciated.

Does a cheap joystick would do the trick with this game? like this one? http://www.bestbuy.ca/fr-CA/product...spx?path=265e456041e17a24e195b06886b5f79cfr02

Don't want to unfold hundreds of dollars for a one-game stick, but still want something that will last and offre some nice customization options.

With a HOTAS, you get what you pay for. It really depends on your budget because there's always something nicer that you can get if it is doable for you.

I don't have any direct experience with that stick, but Thrustmaster is a pretty good brand. Like most companies, they have tiers. They might be great at the top and middle, but crappy at the lower end of the spectrum. I'd head over to the Frontier forums and see if someone is using that particular one.

+1 for getting that T-Flight Hotas X.
It was the first HOTAS I purchased and was great value given it's pricing and how it sits in the whole spectrum of HOTAS available, along with the price gulf (almost 2.5x) between that and the next superior (and expensive) HOTAS that caught my attention, that being the X52/Pro. Another honorable mention has to go to the Logitech 3D Pro, as it's pretty much the same price as the T-Flight, although not a HOTAS.
One thing to note, the three buttons on the side of the throttle aren't the strongest and after a year of moderate use began to push though and became a chore to use.
Then again, that beginning to push though was enough to motivate me to get my X55

I'm wondering if someone can help me figure out if I screwed up.

So, I have a heatsink launcher installed. You can clearly see it in my first picture on this page on the left aft utility mount. However, it does not show up in my modules list, it's not assignable to a fire group, and best I can tell nothing happens when I press the dedicated keybind. Am I missing something? All I can think is that I never stocked it with ammo (I guess in my mind at the time it should've come with one clip), but even out of ammo I feel I should see some sign of it on my holoscreens.

It's been a while since last had one, so can anyone with more recent experience help me figure out what's going on with it?

Are you sure you installed heat sinks? I'm having a hard time telling from that image. I just bought an adder for testing and here is a couple of pictures of mine with one on each utility mount.
https://imgur.com/a/fD5z9

Also here is how it should display on your HUD assuming the heat sink hasn't been assigned to any fire group.

Finally, the default ammo count is 1/3. It should also display as 0/0 if you have no ammo.

Thanks for the shots, Monk. On closer inspection, what I have mounted doesn't look like that.

Any guess as to what I have installed there?

Edit: Yep, I definitely screwed up. It's a shield booster. I had glanced at the specs of one and I must have quick purchased it thinking I had moved to the heat sink launcher right next to it. *facepalm*

Oh well, maybe it'll prove useful on my way back into the bubble.

Now at a little over 16000LY. Definitely have a rhythm down, but mistakes do happen so some of my unrepairables have taken damage here and there. I'm pretty excited as I can finally see the Milky Way wrapping around me in a complete ring. Some pics from the trip:

Found this pair of small moons very closely co-orbiting with their parent gas giant in the background:

Found an abandoned outpost or perhaps some wreckage while exploring on one:

I love the way the white stars look:

Most recently, I found this neat looking gem:

On approach to the large blue stripe seen above:

Ever closer. This moon is larger than it looked from a distance:

"Now if I can just find a parking space:"

I ended up touching down there and that's where I last logged out. When I return I'll be doing a little SRV driving (could really use some vanadium) then be on my merry way.

Oh, BTW, two days until the 2.1 patch drops!

I didn't get very far over Memorial Day weekend. Had an unexpected mission for work and spent the rest of the time with the family.

However, as of today I'm 1000LY out from SagA*. The star field has changed dramatically. The graphical updates from 2.1 are a welcome touch, too. With NMS delayed, I've got more time to finish this run before it comes out.

Almost there:

These two took their toll. Once again I was dropped out of hyperspace directly between them. A few percentage points of damage later I figured it was worth stopping for a shot:

And parking for the night. This is near the terminator of a planet in the center of a massive (thousands of kms across) crater. She's been treating me well for the past 24,000LY:

I made it today. Probably my last update, since after some sight seeing I'll be heading back towards Sol.

Beauty shot in the last system before the jump to SagA, checking out the new look of the rocky rings:

Powering up for the final jump. SagA is the glowing area directly ahead:

And, boom! There it is, larger than life. The gravitational lensing effect (see video below) made it a pretty interesting visit:

SagA has a companion star that was quite massive (got a sensor reading on it from 50,000Ls):

Video of the lensing effect from SagA for the curious:
https://youtu.be/QdRSAH2PGLI

Worth the trip. I thought for a bit about where to go from here, but I think I'll head back to Sol after I travel "up" from the galactic plane for a while to get a decent view. When I get back, I think I'm going to kit out an Asp Explorer and head out to the rim (since NMS is delayed to August now).

Sabrewings, I want to wish you the best of luck on your RETURN journey. 2.1 Brings in a whole lot of firepower to NPC's. If you are interdicted by an AI on your way back, I think you will blow up incredibly fast in the armorless Adder. (2-4 shot kill)

Be incredibly wary of your sensors and if you do see a contact, I would exit SC immediately. If you are Interdicted, remember to High-Wake out of there to a nearby system rather than trying to go back into SC in the same system to save a bunch of time.

Fly safe, CMDR! LOL

Yes, it might be a good idea to drop every time before you jump in the bubble. Also look into the iridium wing.

Anyone else disappointed with the Engineers Update? Never mind the issues with the NPCs, the actual Engineers themselves (and the materials needed to partake in their services) are a HUGE grind, worse than the base game already was. I keep waiting for the devs to add real content, and instead it's just more grind. Feels like a freemium game. Seeing an actual roulette wheel when attempting an upgrade was a real facepalm moment. I am actually dreading future updates now, they seem to be taking this game in the wrong direction.

I read that this game lacks content and gets boring after a while. Do you know if they plan to add more content any time soon? I figured I would just wait for Star Citizen but I would get this if it had some sort of EVE type content added.
