Well yeah, but FA doesn't work like that anymore. FA doesn't work anything like that anymore, sadly.

Care to elaborate? Do you mean they nerfed Flight Assist? Any official link?

In the Beta 1, turning FA off let you maintain maximum boost speed and increased turning speed indefinitely. This was nerfed in Beta 2 onwards. FA off lets you fly in a different direction than you are facing (e.g. to let you shoot at a target while not flying directly towards it). This is tricky though since with FA off you have to compensate for all movement manually, which makes hitting a target quite difficult. FA off does not give you any increase in maneuverability.

The news letter is out. Great news!!

We couldn’t be where we are today without our community. Players have been integral to the development of Elite: Dangerous over the past two years and it’s been a two-way relationship that’s set to continue throughout 2015. We have a number of major updates planned throughout the year, and our Beta backers will get exclusive access first. Beta participants will play on a separate client so testing won't keep you from playing the regular game, and all participants can continue to play the full retail game while testing is ongoing.

We’ll have ways for new players to join our existing Beta backers very soon and we’ll have details on how you can sign up in an upcoming newsletter.

Beta backers will be the first to experience Elite: Dangerous 1.1 in the first week of February and with their help we’re hoping to roll out the update to everyone one week later. We’ll be talking next week about how 1.1 will introduce a new way to collaborate with other players in the galaxy in preparation for 1.2’s major Wings update in early March.

For now we have good news for anyone embarking on a long journey. The 1.1 update will increase the maximum distance for the route planner by ten times – up to 1,000 light years – and you might just see our new look gas giants along the way...

They state that people will be able to have a separate account for beta versions. This sounds stupid though, because I don't want to waste time playing a beta account where my progress will not be carried over.

Beta is for testing. People forget that. You don't play a beta to have fun, you play a beta to find bugs and help fix it so that when it's released it's not still broken.

I bet what's going to happen is that it'll be an additional listing from the launcher. You can either select to play the retail release or you can select the beta to launch in to.

Nobody's going to force you to beta test, either. If you don't want to beta test and report bugs and help them better the game, then don't. Just continue to play the retail and wait for other people to finish the beta testing of the new patch.

I definitely used the Beta for fun That being said, if they start throwing balance issues into the mix with Betas, for that reason alone they're right in keeping Beta in a separate instance from your main account.

A few other games do this too, like Smite. The latest patch is usually available ahead of time on the play test server for players to goof around in and try to break before the changes are implemented. I like that kind of update model.

Same, BF4 does something similar as well.

Okay, this is me in the prison yard taking my shirt off to show my flag. I love this game to death. If this game could cook, hold a conversation and metaphysically get pregnant, I'd marry it.

I love the look, the freedom, the accurate universe modeled that makes that GTA 5 map satire gif look puny. I love how it doesn't insult players' intelligence and drops you in the wild on your own with all the tools you need. I love how it handles things and balances combat around mid tier ships/gear and instead of having an end-game tier (semi accurate right now due to the python evading the nerfbat), it intelligently branches into specializations that don't force you to go to some grind-powered cookie-cutter for everything but let you grind you behind off if that's what tickles your fancy. I love how there's already hundreds of hours worth of gameplay and I have a blast playing with my friend every time yet, it's still barely scratched the surface of the potential for things to come. I just love this game.

All of that said, let's be real. The game-breaking bug of combat logging is driving me two fries short of a happy meal. Seriously, it NEEDS to be hotfixed yesterday, I don't care how much of the rest of the game is broken while doing so. When me and my man completely outplay some guy in a python (a ship that costs about 100 times the price of mine) over a long 15 minutes, a dozen shield cells and he can alt-F4, become invincible til he despawns, then log back on with 100% health and seemingly more ammo, I want to just punt this game aside and never play it until everyone who has exploited this crap gets forced to wear a tar and feather skin for a month of game-time.

Lord I hate SC and their "pay and not play" so called "game" so much I really would love to play ED again, but those horrible bugs are still in there?

WORST NETCODE and implementation of "multi-player" in the history of gaming. I really wish'd ED be a great game but I just cannot get myself playing it again. (I might tho at some time). And worse EVEN....I totally admit I would probably Alt-F4 myself when I know it would save me millions and my ship.... ;( I think I did that a few times back in beta once I heard about it...sigh...

I know of at least one other space game were this was a MASSIVE problem until they implemented some counters to it. Hard to believe this problem made it past Beta.
That is extremely disappointing but fixable. Hopefully Soon TM ;-)

Yeah, Eve had the same problem where you could pull the ethernet from your NIC to win fights.

Yeah, it will get worked out eventually. It is one of those things that will get higher priority as more complaints show up. I think at this point in time, most people are off exploring. As more PvP starts to happen, this issue will get more complaints and need to be addressed somehow.

Got into the game, played for about an hour. All I've managed to do is get interdicted. I survived though! Ended up making no money, landed in the LHD 3447 system at yaping enterprises.

Head to the system's nav beacon and look for ships that are wanted. That's a good start.

Telling a noobie to go bounty hunting in a sidewinder isn't the most helpful advice.

What you really should be doing is a few billboard cargo delivery missions. Do these until you have enough to buy a class C or better frameshift drive. Then start trading rares (e.g. between Eranin and Lave). With a single run you'll be able to buy a hauler or eagle. With just a couple more runs in a hauler you'll be able to get a Viper or even Cobra.

I've got a 2 jump trade that makes me about 1.2k a run. I plan on doing that until I make enough for a fuel scoop depending on how much they are. Don't even have a warrent scanner yet.

What do the frame shift drives do? Farther jumps?

One question? How do I take a screenshot? Made a beautiful flyby of a blue gas giant in supercruise this morning. Also amazing how I can keep 60fps at max and 1080p with this 280x. Most new games don't.

1.2k is not very much at all and is kind of a waste of time. Upgrade your sidewinder to have 10 cargo capacity (sell shields and weapons, you don't need them for trading, just run away from any interdictions) and do bulletin board cargo delivery missions. They pay 5k-10k each and after doing a few of them you can afford better fittings. Yes, frameshift drive increases your jump range which is crucial to trading. Rare goods net you about 15,000 profit per ton (150k per trip in a sidewinder, 300k round trip profit). All you need is the minimum jump range to make the trip, which I think is 10-12 LY or so. The higher the better since the longer the range, the fewer jumps you need. You may also need a fuel scoop, the lowest class is sufficient though. The sooner you can get to an adder/viper/cobra the better, the sidewinder is very limiting.
