So you really like the HOTAS over keyboard and mouse? I'd really rather not switch cause I usually keep my joystick put away and I like all the keys at my fingertips when using the KB+M (they're still there if you have a joystick but you can't get to them as fast). But I may give it a shot at least.

I rebound some keys from the default. I moved throttle to mousewheel up/down and set it to 10% increments instead of continuous. I also changed mouse X-axis to yaw instead of roll and set roll to Q/E. I moved thrust up/down to W/S as well, and instead of just J for FSD I set hyperspace to R and supercruise to F. I like this setup WAY better and find maneuvering my ship much, much easier (though I am also just getting the hang of it more).

For missions I took a bounty one and some other delivery one or something, but for the latter I kept getting refused docking at the place so I just aborted the mission. The bounty one I couldn't find any ships to shoot where I was and it was getting late so I just aborted that too. I'll have to try again; I'm definitely liking the game.

I can manage with a keyboard and mouse in this and bf4, but I don't think you can really compete with someone with hotas. Took me about 2 days to muscle memory it, now I can't live without. It feels more natural, and no way I'd be able to use 5-6 keys at the same time on kb and mouse.

I'm not understanding piracy as a viable profession. I shoot at transports and they just fight my viper until death, I guess I need to pop cargo things?

I such at combat but can handle most npcs... I guess I'll just stick with bounty hunting. Mining is sort of fun...maybe I'll save up and get a good mining rig. I haven't even touched trading yet...bah. dunno

Often times, if you shoot up a ship down to like 20% or 10% hull, they'll start ejecting their cargo. Try getting them down that low and then holding your fire for a few seconds to see if they dump cargo.

You can even shoot the actual cargo hatch to break it. As an example, the cargo hatch on an Asp is on the under side, dead center mass.

You don't need limpets.

One of my first thoughts when I saw what the game was about was that I'd get to use my joystick and throttle, but I haven't went to it quite yet. Mainly because I think of War Thunder and the number of people that play that with a KB+M instead of a joystick. I'm pretty sure most people, especially the good ones, use KB+M in that game so I was wondering if maybe for whatever reason it was better to use KB+M in Elite: Dangerous. Suppose I'll have to try it out now with my HOTAS.

I do. It gave me a more realistic feel. Like I'm actually as close to flying through space as I ever will be. If you're more comfortable using the KB+mouse do it. You got to do what feels right for you.

Another thing to keep in mind is I DON'T game. This was the first playable game I've bought for myself since Diablo II: LOD. I bought this game and SC to fulfill a childhood fantasy. I have no interest in being a good ED player. I'm happy with being the guy who flies around exploring and doing the occasional odd job for fuel and repairs.

I can't say much about missions yet. I basically find a port and look at the bulletin board. If a job doesn't pop up that interests me I look at the commodities and buy some low dollar metals like copper. Then I launch pick a system I have never been to before and jump.

I did take a screen shot of my setup for you to see. Maybe you can compare it to yours. I admit it's not perfect but it works. Sorry about the clutter...I'm terrible about that on my pc desk.

I'm thinking about trying trading for the first time when I get home from work. I'm going to cash in the Viper, and get a transport and beef it up a bit. I tried that Slopey's thing but couldn't get it to work, I didn't really try very hard though

I'm probably just going to do basic stuff, no luxuries or anything like that. I keep seeing screenshots of people with Anaconda's and still have like 50mil in the bank. That is just insane. I am just under a week and I have ~1 mil from bounty hunting. So...I hope to remedy that so I can get a decent combat ship.

Anyone have any tips for starters? Or tips if you're not using Slopey's?

Also I found a really neat system if you are interested!

BD-02 5286
Federal System
Has 5 or 6 stations, most of them are the "big" kind of hubs that you can outfit in (not the little platform ones).
All stations are federation except 1 is independent.
11/12 planets are gas planets with rings! There are like 12 RES sites! And several of the stations sit inbetween the rings and the planet, so its like a 12mm jump to get to the RES->station. Very convenient!

If you're a miner/bounty hunter/pirate, it's a pretty nice system.

Well seeking luxuries is definately the fastest way to make money, and once 1.1 comes out it will be nerfed so this is your last chance to crank out some dough with less effort. Baring that, if you don't have a type-6 yet than rare trading is the best way to go. If you look around on reddit there are people that have figured out some optimum routes. If you don't want to do rares either, then the trick to regular trading is to find an extraction or refinery system with high supply and low price on gold or palladium, then find a nearby high tech system to sell to and return with consumer items or progenitor cells typically.

I have not played in like a week or any other games for that matter. Work & real life getting the better of me. Hopefully this weekend...

How do you identify bounty AI's? I guess I need that warrant scanner. Which internal component of the sidey can I "sacrifice" to replace it with the scanner?

The fact alone that I'm asking these questions means I'm getting old. I used to know everything when a game launched, now I'm asking the same type of questions I used to answer for others...

When you target a ship it will say on the left side of the UI:

-Name
-(Level)[harmless, dangerous, elite etc.,]
-Clean/Wanted

You don't need a Kill Warrant Scanner (KWS) just the basic ship ones will do. If they come up as "wanted", you can interface with the left menu to see how much they are worth. If it says they are wanted, that just means that they are wanted in the system you are CURRENTLY IN.

The KWS is used to hunt in anarchy systems (everyone is clean in anarchy systems), but you can also use it in regular systems if you don't mind a bounty on your head. If you target someone who is "clean" and then a bounty for another system comes up, and you shoot them, you can still claim the bounty in that other system, but you will now have a bounty in that system you shot them in.

What I do is use the KWS on targets already marked "wanted", to increase their bounties a little bit (although I have to go to a different system to claim it). Ocassionally I will hunt in anarchy systems and either pirate NPC's or just kill people, but it can be rough out there.

As far as replacing a system for the KWS, I can't remember if it goes in the hardpoints section for utility, or the livery, if it is the livery I usually dump the basic discovery scanner since I usually don't venture too far out exploring.

QUESTION: If anybody knows, I found a station (not a hub, or w/e) that had the pirate skulls floating on it. I was able to land, pretty sure it was an anarchy system I was just refueling in, but do those have any significance? Like is there pirate rank you can earn or....?

You don't need a warrant scanner.

When you target another ship, there's a panel on the lower left portion of your forward-facing view. It's to the left of your radar and compass. This panel will either say "clean" or "wanted."

Wanted means that they have a bounty for the same system that you're both in. When you kill this target, you're awarded the bounty for whatever that system has for him but you are awarded no bounty for claims made by any other system.

It's possible to have warrants in multiple systems.

If you scan a ship with the Kill Warrant Scanner prior to killing them, any bounties that they might have in OTHER systems will ALSO be added to your award upon their death.

If these additional bounties are in systems that are controlled by the same faction as the current system, you can most likely cash that in at whatever station you fly to in that system that can cash out your bounties. If those additional bounties you found with the K-Warrant scanner were in systems that are controlled by different main factions, you'll have to fly to a system controlled by that faction to receive that part of your reward.

Yes, those are pirate stations.

No, there is no pirate faction rank yet.

The K-Warrant goes on the same tab as your weapons.

Livery is for paint jobs and decals only.

Ah yeah, that's right. I R still pretty noob.

Man I really hope they fix the whole social aspect of this game SOON. I love this game a lot, and will for a few more weeks, but I have this inkling that soon I am going to get burned out if I don't have a group or someone to interact with. I pretty much solely play online games but the fact that it's near impossible to do group stuff without 3rd party programs and meet ups is kind of lame.

Also still struggling with trading. I can still use tips from reddit about rare trade routes and stuff currently right? As in the 'trade nerf' isn't coming until the beta is released as live? When is that by the way?

Oooooh shiny new ship, sweet. Any others and word on when they are arriving? By the way, hows that new expansion coming along?

By the way, Bubble. How's your trip to Earth coming along? Did you ever get the permit to enter system? You seemed to have leaped frog me in the wealth/ship department.

I haven't played this game in a while due to work/studies. New ship like that motivates me to clear some free time to start playing again. I hope they fix that logoffski problem and add the new ship(s) by the time I get back.

I've been pirating in eravate, other CMDRs only

Loads of fun. Is there another "starter" system? Don't want to bounty too high in federal

That's near my home system. I'll be on the look out.

I've not made any progress. Elite was a bit too distracting and I got removed from my PC by my parents for a week so I could focus on homework.

As of right now, I'm rank 1 in the federation with 4 ships. I don't really need all of them, but my siblings play it too and I don't want them in my 2.4m type 6.

Also, is wings out, or still in beta? Friends should be easier to fly around with right? I'll probably be online for the next 2-4 hours, but that might be it for the weekend.

I'm on my way out to the Cat's Paw Nebula, haven't seen anything particularly interesting yet although an NPC cobra did interdict me and did some damage before I manged to scare him off. Good thing I brought 2 pulse lasers as bare minimum defense lol.

My viper is now worth over 1m with that 10% loss.
Why am I driving something so expensive?
