Time to close this thread. Both sides have been deliberated and if it continues, it might get ugly. Another situation where we need to agree to disagree.

Blade_47 hit the point with his post. PM'ing always starts with one first message, if this is considered spam, disable PM's generally. Every PM is spam then. Period.

I agree with Jator. All that can be said has been said. This discussion has run it's course, and should be closed.

You guys are pathetic trying to come up with a defense that all PMs are spams..... That is not a defense and you know it.

[edit] I will respectfully say don't reply to this so the thread dies... otherwise reply to me in a *ack* pm

To echo the words of Canada's Prime Minister Pierre-Elliott Trudeau when he invoked the War Measures Act during the 1970 October Crisis and was asked just how far he was prepared to go:

"Just watch me."

You tell em Dennis!!!.

Office Boy:
And why do Canadians love Pierre Trudeau so much? It's sickening to see so much love for a politician.

He is what G. Washington was to the U.S. Maybe that?s the difference between Canada and U.S.???

Seriously this time,

I think office boy hit the issue on the head. This is about privacy and what regard TA holds privacy in. Quit hidding behind vague definitions of the term spam. It is merely an overused status quo term for unwanted [insert any form of communication that gets you off here].

We have since come to an understanding of the rules of communication as set forth by DNET. But to quote them in support of PM'ing for RC5 is out of context.

If you want to get somewhere with this, get down to the core issue, where does a member's right to privacy end/begin?

I feel that a PM to member that you have had interaction with in a previous thread is an appropriate form of contact. I have no doubt that some of Dennil's contacts were based on this. However, I also know for a fact that he has contacted members via email addresses that are contained with profiles. Specifically one member who has past history with DNET and has since been employeed as the CTO of a competing distributed computing organization! Certainly there is very little that is "personal" or credible about that particular contact.

Unfortunately, I disagree with Jay here. Instead of sweeping this under the rug, we can get down to core issues and discuss them reasonably. I have proof that it works!

Is TA in such a compromising position that we need to compromise ourselves and our team ethically?

Osmo.

Jay- sorry

I belive he was acting on his own and not as the voice of the team, I am saddened that he did this and that it inconvinenced you, on behalf of team anandtech I apologize. Denni I read your post and am saddend that you feel that its OK you did not ask the team however you posted these private messages under the Team anandtech name. next time I hope that you consult with us Before you do these events in the furture.

Oh come on guys. Everyone knew he was doing it. Not one person said anything against it cause it was really helping out the team.

I'm Physically sickened by some of your actions. Why do we do this to each other?

We seem to have a wide disparity in what is viewed as 'acceptable' or 'ethical'.
This debate will not be won. Bottom line is that Denis has done a tremendous job recruiting for the team - Team AnandTech.

The method works for him. Whatever each individual's methods are - those are the methods they use. If you don't like one particular method, then don't use it.

Several of you are slamming the single most productive member of this team. It's not in the best interests of the team and I appeal for an end to this discussion. If we try to shoot down every idea - the DPC will take first place guaranteed. You don't see these types of discussions on GoT. And - they're laughing at us right now. Let's focus and pull together. I challenge anyone (myself included) to dispute that Denis is the absolute #1 producer in terms of time vs new members. Can we please move on?

Narzy,

You are wrong. I did not post my private invitations "under the Team anandtech name". I did not act "as the voice of the team" and nowhere in my invitation do I portray myself as such. That should be clear from the following excerpts:

"I was wondering if you would be interested in joining my Borg herd"..."So this private message constitutes a one-time invitation to join Team Anandtech and be part of my Borg group in a miniteam called TA Cube."

"I am part of a team involved in a contest as to who will find the key first, Team Anandtech (after the best hardware site in the world, off course). Within TA, I am part of a miniteam call TA Cube or simply THE BORG!!!"

I know that we have not talked before but I would be delighted if you jump on board my group or if you become your own Borg."

I simply ask people if they want to join my herd, which is part of TA Cube, which is part of Team AnandTech and therefore I invite them to join Team AnandTech in the process but I do it as an individual, a terrible thing to say for a Borg.

I think this is dragging on a bit. But I stick by what I said in my first post - D'floss should try and get the feel of the persons character before trying to send them this PM.

I think sending this to any Tom, Dick, and Harry who is on the forum would make it become spam - which I dont want to see as this is effective and things like spam would turn people off of the forum let alone the team.

I think Dan and Russ (no insult intended here) are using the 'is the biggest recruiter/producer for the team' as a sort of justification, which it isn't.

Plain and simply, d'floss should be a bit more selective about who he sends it to (I dont think the 'we have not talked before' bit is a good start) and scout out people a little.

Alright, I don't post much here, but I feel I had to say something in Dennilfloss' defense. He also sent me a PM, asking me to join his Borg. Before that, I had a vague idea of what RC5 was, but I did not really understand what it was about, or what was required. Once I agreed to join, DF and Russ walked me through it, and helped me with problems I was having getting it to run. If it was not for this "spam" some of you are referring to, I never would have joined. Dennilfloss has gotten many others like myself, who just did not get the whole idea of RC5. So instead of accusing him of doing wrong, I think you should be patting him on the back for all the effort he has put into this.

Down guys. Let's put it to rest.
We don't need to dissect every syllable and try to derive meaning from it.

Anyone who thinks they've got a better way should try to match Denis' output of new blood. If you can't - well.... figure out the rest of the speech.
