Maybe this should start happening, at least over here.

The ongoing reason often given for the demise of journalism is that it is all based on market trends: The people want clickbait, not news. Thus, logic dictates, that it isn’t a government problem, but an economic one. “We’re giving the people what they want,” is our lament.

The government created this mess. Specifically, Ronald Reagan created this mess. The media landscape, our current political divisiveness and the fact that cheesy, cheap hucksters like Donald Trump can worm their way into politics is all because of Ronald Reagan. By removing the guardrails that insured a robust journalistic industry dedicated to providing factual information, we’ve been gifted, via Reagan, the Fox Network that recently settled a $750 million libel lawsuit and admitted it’s not broadcasting news – only entertainment. Biden is in a unique position to fix the greatest existential communication problem of this century: bust up the media monopolies.

He has long supported unions, decried monopolies and championed the cause of the small businessman. He took on big pharma. He can take on Big Media (emphasis on Big.)
The thing that killed journalism was the Internet. It fostered an expectation that news (and content) should be free, and destroyed the newspaper business model. The nail in the coffin was social media satiating dumb media consumers, but that's really just gravity and inertia. (Also note the GOP's entire electoral strategy relies upon on low information voters.)

The NY Times has finally shown you can successfully pivot to a successful subscription-based model but it's really too little, too late for the industry as a whole.

Joe Biden could walk on water, but he wouldn't be able to fix journalism in 6 months as a lame duck.

Yesterday's Google antitrust verdict was big news, and I wanted to mention it but couldn't find a good existing thread to sneak it into. Of course we can expect years of appeals from Alphabet.

Won't any attempt to do that run into the "Calvinball" (I really want to call it Mornington Crescent) of the Supreme Court?

Elon Musk's X sues advertisers over alleged 'massive advertiser boycott' after Twitter takeover

ABC|44 minutes ago
Elon Musk's social media platform X has sued a group of advertisers, alleging that a "massive advertiser boycott" deprived the company of billions of dollars in revenue and violated antitrust laws ...

Hopefully it will open the door for me suing all Ebay users for their failure to bid for all my old shit when I put it on there.

Fuck yea, at the end of the day you cant have democracy without a functional free press/journalism.

In the US, you can file a lawsuit for practically any damn reason. Doesn't mean you'll win, but there's nothing to stop you from filing such lawsuits. At least until you get slapped with a cease and desist for filing too many of them.

What this shows is that Twitter is bleeding a lot of money, and their finances are in ruins. He's desperate, and doesn't have a single clue on how to fix it. Hint: Don't be a racist douchebag.

Sorry you must be mistaken, clearly the right call is to call for civil war because you lost a custody hearing.

This past week I've seen a lot of people posting how they left Twitter and joined threads. Some big names in there too like Pete Souza and Parker Molloy, and others that had tens of thousands of followers there.

This is true but it should also be noted that they judge shopped for O’Connor so it’s highly likely they win at the district level. Not because of the law or anything else, just because the judge will always rule in favor of republicans, no matter how absurd the case.

Well in this case there are Republicans on both sides (Musk v. corporate America), so it is a bit less clear.

You would think that but very recently we had Republicans on both sides in the social media case and both the district court and the 5th circuit ruled that states had the right to force social media companies to publish right wing content against their wishes. Even worse, at least 3 SCOTUS justices seemed to agree.

Wtf? What’s next, he sues the rest of us for not visiting Twitter? Or for refusing to buy a Tesla?

On very little reading, the lawsuit seems to be based on the theory that all of the advertisers have formed some sort of "cartel" to get people to not purchase their product. I would think they would all individually have the right not to advertise on a particular site. If this “cartel” were actively blocking others (say, key suppliers) from also advertising there, we’d start to approach an argument. But even that would be a stretch. Even if they were working together, how is organizing a boycott not legal?

Unless Twitter has smoking gun emails, the defense of many companies independently deciding to not advertise on a platform that forces them to look like they support shitty, racist abhorrent ideas next to their adds seems pretty easy to support. It’s going to fun to see what discovery they can get out of Twitter. All those internal emails about advertisers complaining about Nazi stuff and Twitter’s internal response.

A judge should kick this bullshit suit to the curb and fine Musk double for being an unrepentant douchebag.

But it’s O’Conner which means he will issue summary judgment is musks favor while blowing musk. Then the fifth circuit will bless the ruling, and at the Supreme Court it will finally get killed for the ahitty suit it is over the objections of Thomas yes, Alito, and Kavenaugh.

And all the lawyers rejoice as they get to bill millions in pointless legal fees. Although open question if one’s on Musk side ever get paid, just like Trump…

If corporations are "people" that can spend their money as they choose, for any reason and without limit, then they can certainly not spend it on anyone that they choose not to. Even this SCOTUS wouldn't argue that the people can't organize boycotts against corporations as they choose. So it would be interesting to see what they think about this new class of "people" that they created out of thin air, and if they have similar rights to choose what to do with their money.

It is almost exactly the logic of the 'incel'.

(Hopefully he'll end up involuntarily-insolvent. Elon the insol?)
