Spaces could use a different set of servers so could have been targeted directly. You don't just do ping -f twitter.com it'd be more sophisticated than that.

Apparently rebooting a server fixed it though, so it probably not a DDoS after all. The interview is going now and it's stable.

They tested with 8M users before, now they're at about 1.2M.

Spoiler: rebooting is what i do/claim is happening while I fix a problem. The few remaining competents at twitter probably fired up more connection proxies while 'something rebooted'.
