Crap,
So my co-worker sent me an invite to WoW earlier this week for a free trial. I toyed with the idea and then ended up downloading it to my Powerbook. I played lots of DAoC back in the day, and always wished it would have run well on my Laptop at the time (1ghz Compaq).

I fired it up, and sure enough it runs flawlessly. I sitting with my dad who was over so he could watch my daughter... made it to level 5 while watching are you smarter than a fifth grader. This is a bad thing. I'm already contemplating getting an account even though I have my lovely 360 in the corner.

wait, your dad came over to watch your daughter so you could play WoW and watch Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?

Glad you have your priorities straight...

Summations often leave out some specific details, you know, like he was coming over to watch my daughter while I was at work the next day. We were just hanging out and "Are you smarter than a fifth grader?" came on, so we were watching that. I decided to start up WoW for the first time during during that time while my daughter was already in bed sleeping and we had nothing else to do.

I guess because you douche bags are critical of everything, I should have wrote it first, but I didn't feel like explaining my whole evening last night when all I wanted to do was say "Crap, I may be getting a WoW account because it played very nicely on my laptop"

Rofl. WoW may or may not be worth it Modeps. Not sure how else to say it. It can be a very social experience, but you'll also spend way more time than you'd spend on other games playing it. Theres trade-offs both ways.

why even mention it all if it has nothing to do with playing wow? if you wanted to summarize it, your post should have been this:

Oh, quit being so picky about it. For God's sake, the guy gave a little background story, you jumped all over him because YOU ASSUMED something... now you try to fault him because he added back-story? Lay off, you made a mistake now just let it go.

WoW is addicting to many, and the gameplay is good still. the endgame raiding is the big downfall for a lot of people, its akin to a second job sometimes. we have guildies that raid 4 nights a week, then farm 3 nights to get materials to make flasks and food to buff them for the raids the other 4 days. gold farming is necessary then too, especially when youre learning new areas. lots of social built into it, and a pretty deep trap to fall into. i only play when my kids are sleeping, but ive known people that would play all evening, then after 3 hours ingame would tell their raid group "gotta go put kids to bed, brb!". that astounds me, what were the kids doing the last 3 hours you were playing? i dont raid, so i dont really see all that side much personally.

great time tiller tho, and very fun killing stuffz.

Give it the full 10 days before you make a decision. And play a gnome imo.

Yeah, I'd be the same way. I've got time for gaming only when my daughter is sleeping and chores are done. My coworker has made it up to level 59 by playing only casually for a few months... which intrigued me much because I know in DAoC, casual players would be stuck in the low levels for a loong time with no advancement.

I like MMOs, I've played 3 different ones (CoH, DAoC, and Asheron's Call 2). So far, WoW totally seems like a great combination of CoH (very casual, low commitment) and DAoC (you can really get involved in gear and talents).

My coworker has made it up to level 59 by playing only casually for a few months... which intrigued me much because I know in DAoC, casual players would be stuck in the low levels for a loong time with no advancement.

You've correctly summarized levels 1-69. Reaching level 70 is akin to hitting a brick wall in terms the character advancement you'll achieve while keeping up that same casual playing routine. In my experience, almost everybody who doesn't have large amounts of time to devote to the game ends up disappointed when they hit max level and all there is to do is grind. There's only 4 avenues to the really good gear: pvp, instances, factions, and gold. And they all take a very long time.

I totally don't have a ton of time. If all that awaits is disappointment, I don't know if I want to get involved now

ggnl is right. Exactly why I quit, and I'm not a casual player!

Well it's still pretty fun just getting to the cap, especially if you do it on a new server where you're starting at the same time as everyone else. A lot of people just forego the endgame crap and spend their time playing a bunch of midlevel characters. I have a couple of friends (2 brothers) that have been playing steadily for years but dont have a single lvl 70 character between them because they like the mid-level content so much.

I don't want you to get them impression that it's not worth playing. It really is a fantastic game, especially if you're playing with real life friends or you make good friends in the game. I just wanted to make it clear that the game really slows down the further you get.

Modeps,
I'll throw my two cents in here. Like you I played DAoC and enjoyed it. When I had the chance to get in on the WoW beta I jumped at it. I played and convinced all of my friends to play as well. Fast forward to last month. I don't play all that often anymore. All of my friends play almost every night. Our guild raids Kharazan Three nights a week, and our periodic lan parties are now periodic WoW parties. Personally, I think it's ruined the whole Lan Party thing. In the course of playing the game, I put on 50 lbs. and stopped doing the things i used to enjoy like hiking, mountain biking, and weightlifting. In the course of playing DAoC and WoW, I've personally known three people who got separated or divorced as a direct result of the games. I guess if you can keep the game in perspective, you'll be fine and enjoy yourself. I'm just now digging myself out from under all those lost hours of my life. Don't get me wrong, I had a blast playing with my guildmates. Now, however, it's become more work than it's worth.
