It is my sisters computer, she says that it started rebooting itself a few times, then it turned off and now it wont come back on. Nothing moved the computer or jarred it.

I went and bought a power supply, changed it out, it didnt do anything. I checked all the connections, etc., and I got nothing.

I reset the cmos.... nothing. Tried different power cord and a different outlet, still nothing. Also checked the connection between the power button on the outside of the comp and the mobo....it was fine.

So I have two questions:
1. Is this a common problem and what can I do to fix it?
2. Can I just buy another motherboard/cpu and install it in the emachines case? It is from about 2003 or so.

Thanks

If its a standard ATX (or microATX) case then you should be fine replacing the motherboard (or CPU, depending on whats broken)

If you say you replaced the PSU and it still isn't doing anything (it isn't beeping is it?) then it sounds to me like the motherboard is toast

If it has a operating system on a restore CD, chances are putting in a new MB will make it recognize the computer as not the one it was licensed for and won't install. You already have a PSU and you can salvage the HD, floppy, CD Rom drive, ram, network card, and the CPU if you want to. Get a decent case and a cheap MB, find a vendor offering free shipping and you'll be looking at $60 total if you go cheap. You'll probably need a MB with onboard video as the emachine probably used this as well and you won't have a vid card. However, windows will cost approx. $90 OEM.

I had the same problem with my sisters emachines. The PC didn't start one day and it turned out the power supply had died, so I had to replace it. The PSUs in the emachines are complete crap.

Now while it's true they are crap, they are really no crappier than your HP/Compaq/Dell/Sony.

Back when eMachines was a new company, they really were garbage.

But recently, they really have improved to the point where their home PCs are just as good as your other brand-name computer, sometimes even better.

That being said, all retail brands tend to have sh!tty PSUs, & i would never recommend buying a prebuilt brand-name PC

I was with her when she bought it, I knew emachines werent the greatest but it was a good price with a monitor, and she got at least a year and a half of good service out of it.

I probably will just get a new case so I dont have to deal with the small space of the emachines case and salvage everything but the mobo and the cpu. Frys has cheap mobo/cpu combos and Ill just have her buy windows.

Dad has two of them that he bought for really cheap. So far, both are still chugging away.
