Embarassed to be a Utahn

I had a friend visiting from Austin, TX for 5 days. While he was here I tried to show him all the fun places here in Utah, which is not a really easy thing to do. I thought I had it made when today, before I took him to the airport, we decided to go check out the LDS sections of Salt Lake. We stopped at Temple Square first and felt like we were herded around like cattle. I got the feeling that we were either to attend a scheduled tour or get off the grounds.

Next, we went to the LDS Conference building. Upon entering the lobby, we were immediately helped into the 10 minute tour of the auditorium. The older lady who I assume was our tour guide was just finishing up her coversation with another lady that had the tour guide or LDS personnel badge on. I thought I overheard a negative comment that our guide made about Texas, so I decided to inform her that my guest was from Texas to give her the opportunity to not embarass herself. She then took the opportunity to inform us that she was going to move to Texas but decided against it because there were too many cockroaches and WETBACKS. I was completely stunned, and the next thing I heard was my guest informing both of us that he had to use the restroom. Our 'kind' tour guide informed us that the restroom was out the door and to the right.

Well, as we wandered out of the auditorium and to the right, we apparently went 5 feet too far and were shouted at and promptly escorted to the men's room.

After this interesting visit, we went to the family history museum and it seemed as if we were being watched like we were scoping out a good bomb site or something.

Overall, I must say that as a native Utahn I am extremely embarassed and I think the LDS church should be ashamed of itself.

Well what do you expect from those Mormon's? I wouldn't want to go to Utah other than to fly over on my way to Las Vegas.

Yes, I understand. I escape frequently. However, they're not all this way... I have some good family members that are LDS. But they can't stand the overall Mormon culture here either for the most part.

You also elected Orrin Hatch.

Well, I tried my best to provide an alternative.

Actually, it was my friend's idea. He wanted to see something unique to Utah. Oh and all those 'Visitors Welcome' signs didn't help anyway.

i believe everybody is entitle to their morals and values but mormans have some warped mind bending techniques. i think its their calm nature and relax approach to every conversion. one of my cousins is marrying a morman down in arizona and i've learned that they are encouraged to marry young. the two idiots even had the audacity to send us a letter validating their reasons for their marriage. i wish i can post it cause it was pretty stupid. they're only 20 and they lectured us on god and marriage..even using quotes from the bible. they talked about money and how its not important cause love always prevails. they talked about how college isn't imporant and that many people get married in college...

all us relatives back in cali are not going to the wedding. not just because we disapprove of the torrid affair but because we can't even go inside the church!

argh! okay, sorry if i got a little tangant (sp?) here.

a beautiful ray of sunshine is a derogatory term implying a mexican who illegally crossed the border from mexico via the river to get to the US.

Some guys here at BYU setup a protest of SCO a while back, nobody showed up and none of the local/regional media cared.

About the behavior at Temple Square, I honestly can't even believe that, that was horrible. I'm Hawaiian, and proudly a Mormon. I moved to Utah a few years ago to attend BYU and the Utahns are not the most racially sensitive people. It's not because they're Mormon, it's because Utah is a mainly white place. I've had to deal with people thinking I'm like the "bad" or "mean" Tongan or Samoan kids from their hometowns.

Please don't think all Mormons are like the lady at the Conference Center. That's really a shame that she and any others there ruined such a potentially cool expirience for your friend and yourself, the conference center is, in opinion, one of the coolest building in Utah, by far.

I've only been to SLC twice for Novell Conferences.... (Both times this year)

I went in April when there was still snow on the slopes. I took my board with me and found that the snow there is like 200 times better than the crap they have in TN and NC... (duh) But I was TRULY impressed with the mountains. I also got to see Huey Lewis and the News in a special concert for the conference I was attending.

When I was there in July, I went to see Phish and Don McLean in concert. (not the same concert) I drove around the mountains and had a good time meeting locals and enjoying the different restaurants.

Places of Interest:

Port O'Call - Bar/Club. Haven't struck out yet there... (HEHE)
Squatter's Pub - Good beer... They sell 6 packs too so you can take em back to the hotel if you want.
Cafe Pierpoint - Cheap margaritas and appetizers on Wednesday
Slopes: Brighton, Snowbird for snowboarding

Just one more reason for me to be skeptical about the Mormon "religion". Have you ever noticed most of them are blond, blue eyed, and have large teeth? The Osmonds aren't blond, but they have the horse teeth. It's like they're breeding a race. Very Arian. In the past, Mormons didn't allow African-Americans into the church, because they had "the mark on Cain" on their skin, reminding us of Satan's presence on Earth. They can join now, but I don't think many hold an office in the church. I know women can't be leaders in the church. Their role is to shut up and have babies. As many as they can, to further populate the cult for generations to come. [/rant]

Hmm...that's wierd...I'm Mormon and Hawaiian...wait let me check something...no I don't have blond hair and blue eyes...let me check some more...neither does my Mom (luckily she's visiting from Hawai`i right now, so I didn't have to call home)...let me check again...my brother...nope he's darker than me...one last time...let me check...nope, my wife...no blond hair on her Navajo body...that's wierd too, because we're all Mormon...odd...

IF you really want to check something, nearly 4 Million CHurch members are Latino, over 500,000 are from Asia, and there are at least 100,000 each Tongan and Samoan.

I work with the fastest Collegiate 1500 Meter runner in teh US, he's definately not a rare white Kenyan Mormon...haha...

Utah is a whole lot of white, that is for dang sure. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints...well, you can read...right?
