I had a friend visiting from Austin, TX for 5 days. While he was here I tried to show him all the fun places here in Utah, which is not a really easy thing to do. I thought I had it made when today, before I took him to the airport, we decided to go check out the LDS sections of Salt Lake. We stopped at Temple Square first and felt like we were herded around like cattle. I got the feeling that we were either to attend a scheduled tour or get off the grounds.
Next, we went to the LDS Conference building. Upon entering the lobby, we were immediately helped into the 10 minute tour of the auditorium. The older lady who I assume was our tour guide was just finishing up her coversation with another lady that had the tour guide or LDS personnel badge on. I thought I overheard a negative comment that our guide made about Texas, so I decided to inform her that my guest was from Texas to give her the opportunity to not embarass herself. She then took the opportunity to inform us that she was going to move to Texas but decided against it because there were too many cockroaches and WETBACKS. I was completely stunned, and the next thing I heard was my guest informing both of us that he had to use the restroom. Our 'kind' tour guide informed us that the restroom was out the door and to the right.
Well, as we wandered out of the auditorium and to the right, we apparently went 5 feet too far and were shouted at and promptly escorted to the men's room.
After this interesting visit, we went to the family history museum and it seemed as if we were being watched like we were scoping out a good bomb site or something.
Overall, I must say that as a native Utahn I am extremely embarassed and I think the LDS church should be ashamed of itself.
