Got an email today that you can get 1.4% back on all purchases with their card. The condition is that you have to have $10,000+ in the savings for six months before the return rate goes from 1.25% to 1.4%. The rewards get deposited into your savings account.

Can anyone explain to me, is the 1.4% (assuming $10k+) card an actual credit card or is it a type of debit/checking card from Emmigrant? Also, how would its billing work? Will I be receiving a monthly statement that I can pay using my checks from my normal checking account, or will it be automatically deducted from my Emmigrant account? Finally, if it is deducted directly, what is the grace period (or whatever it is called)? Thanks!

I just tried signing up with Emigrant, and for some reason it says:

Thank you for your interest in opening a new account.

Unfortunately, we cannot process your application at this time.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact Customer Service at 800 836-1997 or email us at emigrantdirect@emigrant.com.

Hmm...that kind of sucks...

Always a good choice. I might just do that.

and why stop there. I also have HSBC and Presidential (for checking). Swtiching between them isn't very hard once the accounts are setup, and the added paperwork each year is minimal.

why have all 4? Why not just stick all your money in the one with the highest rate? Unless your capping at presidential you make 4.62% on up to 35k with their savings account

I like the idea of that 1.4% back on ALL purchases. I have a 5% back on gas, groceries, and pharmaceuticals Citibank credit card that rocks, but it's only 1% back on everything else and it doesn't automatically go into your savings account. I think I'm gonna have to set up with Emigrant and use the 1.4% card for non-gas, groceries, and drugs purchases.

I do stick nearly everything in the one with the hightest rate, subject to the caps... I just don't close the others...I have all open in order to switch back and forth depending on who has the best deal for the period of time I wanna bother to move the dough.

Also have use the diff accounts for different purposes sometines, just an easy way to keep stuff separate balacned against the slight loss of interest 'tween one and the other.

Just a heads up to the community that its possible Emigrant's email list has been compromised. I had signed up with 2 different unique email addresses (one for the initial application and another when the account was created). Lets just say the email addresses were highly unique and had never been used outside of Emigrant's website.

Today I received junk email on both unique email addresses on the same date.

It was basically a stock scam made of picture with the ticker: AGAO

Same here. Reported it this morning asking if they sold my info or if they were hacked. Either way, I told them I was not inclined to do business with them as a result, and asked for a good reason I shouldn't move my money immediately before someone else does. :/

Just an update, I am working with them now to try to figure out what exactly happened. I will post updates as I have them. If anyone else saw the same thing to a unique e-mail, feel free to forward it to emigrantdirect@emigrant.com for their reference. Please include the full message headers if possible.

There are a ton of places to read about the differences. There's this thread as well as a gigantic Emigrant thread over on the FW finance forum. When it comes down to it, it's about five things:

1.) Interest rate
2.) Interface
3.) Speed of transfer
4.) Customer service
5.) Website\Account security

To me, I don't mind the ugly interface (getting revamped next month) as long as the interest rates are higher. I haven't had to deal with customer service and my account has never been compromised (that I know of). The speed of transfer is about the same for both. So in the end, I park my money at EG.

Dang!

I have $8,000 waiting to clear my Credit Union (3.25%) before I can transfer it to Emmigrant!

With the forthcoming increases from the Fed, I would expect to see Emmigrant at 5% by the end of the year, if not sooner.
