I just spent the time since I first posted my question googling EMO, I must say I am out of touch with this genre of music, or at least what it stands for/represents. Since I have no experience with it I cannot critique it objectively. Now CRAP, err I mean rap on the other hand is something that I deplore. I believe it is one of the things that is ruining the fiber of this country. It's whole existance has turned violence into commenplace and demoralized the younger generation. And yes, I am a 40ish white male that grew up listening to what is reffered to as "classic Rock" today.

Well trucker, i'm 19ish (well actually I turned 19 just a couple of days ago) and I listen to blues and classic rock. But, mind you, not all classic rock is good. To me, the best classic rock is that of which is heavily influenced by blues i.e., Led Zeppelin, Cream, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Doors, etc. Lately I've been on a Skynyrd binge. They are an amazing amazing band.

If that's the case then hopefully you realize those are all "folk" bands. EMO is strongly based on folk and has its very root in it. As is rap.

-edit- pick up Skynyrd's box set. Amazing.

I already have the box set. And yeah, its amazing.

The ability to play three chords > the ability to use a rhyme dictionary

Emo > Rap (by a very small margin)

No way there is even a contest. Emo sucks so much more by a large large margin.

However there is debate as to which stereotypical following is worse. I'm not sure if scene kids or wiggers are worse.

I have no idea what EMO is, other than some sesame street dude.

But if you put it in the same category as RAP, it MUST suck!

emo has become synonymous with "music i dont like" for what appears to be 90% of the population.
the good thing about that, for the haters, is the music isnt aimed at them. its teenage kid music, plain and simple. no more or less whiney than any of the stuff that came before.
its really just time to accept "im no longer a demographic for what is popular." im pretty sure half the bands that get tossed into the emo category are there because of association.
plenty of whining existed before the genre emo became public enemy #2 (usually, as demonstrated here, second due to the longevity of country or the supposed offensive subject matter of rap)
it will come and go and the bands left will be talented, most of whom probably never should have been there in the first place.
there are anomolies, of course.
i think one of the reasons emo doesnt bother me is because i have the special power of being able to change the station.

emo sucks too, but there's nothing less 'musical' than a big black dude (or white wannabe black dude) grunting into a microphone about how he had to kill dozens of people who dissed him, while loads of pimply white kids listen to it and wish they were black

Rap and Emo both suck... i hate them with a passion... But i must say Emo sucks more....

In all emo you have lyrics about sad sh!t and how they want to kill themself, there is an anorexic drummer, a nerdy bass player with big glasses... Also there is the loud screem; every emo song has to have the screechy long screem....

Emo sucks

LOL @ both of those descriptions...

However, there is some rap I can listen to...and I had a roommate two years ago who absolutely loved emo (and therefore listened to it all the time)...I must say, the emo I've heard is basically just whining and screaming, which is more annoying to me than most rap.

Now if only the Emo bands would actually kill themselves instead of just singing about it, the problem would solve itself.

you guys really aren't listening to the right emo.

it's like writting off Johnny Cash because he's shelved in the same genre as Toby Keith.
