Patch notes
here.
I never really had problems before other than the occasional stuck army bug and playability seems to be rather hit and miss with it judging by some posters who found it unplayable. My working theory is people with large amounts of ram saw far fewer problems than people with 2GB but that's just speculation. My vista 64 box w/ 12GB has had perhaps one game crash in over a dozen full length campaigns (100+ hours).
This is still my favorite game of 2009 and if you enjoy turn based strategy games then I recommend it highly. Each turn is intended to take far longer than a turn in a game like Civ IV, so if you are impatient and want to rush through a campaign then you probably won't get as much fun of it. On the other hand, if the idea of fighting the battles out yourself sounds fun, then you'll love it. Building armies that you are going to actually be using really adds a lot of fun to the game for me.
The primary difference with this patch IMO is the increased difficulty. Now the AI trades techs between itself very often, scatters well in naval battles, is more aggressive overall on the campaign map, and recruitment costs jumping up steeply as you increase the difficulty level.
