Update 5/29/12:
Below is the naive musings of a 22 year old who knows nothing about SF. However this naive 22 year old lucked out and found a good place to live in SF through a friend. Huzzah!

This thread is apparently now about whether or not ATOT believes me. But really, I'd like some life advice from those of you who have gone through the college to professional transition. What did you wish you had/hadn't done in my position?

OP 5/14/12:
I am single, 22, and managed to find an excellent (for a fresh college graduate) job in San Francisco proper. I accepted the offer two days ago and now need to find a place to live. I start work June 30th.

I know nothing of the different neighborhoods/districts of San Francisco. I basically know nothing about SF except there is a suspension bridge, hills, sourdough, and some pride parades

My job is located near the Bay bridge on market street. I want to minimize commute and am willing to spend more on rent to do so. My budget allows for up to $1000/m in rent. My job requires a car on some days, as sometimes I will need to get to Emeryville in a timely manner.

So I guess some of my many questions are:
1) What part of SF would be a good place for me to live? (young, single, car owner)

2) What areas will result in SandEagle advising me to, "move out of the ghetto"?

3) Where are good places to meet people? I'm not an Apple toting hipster and I hate coffee.

4) Other general life advice for a young guy with his first "real job" moving to the city.

Thanks guys.

Sounds exciting, congrats! When I was that age, I transferred to NYC, sort of a similar situation. And it was a great decision to go to, awesome experience.

$1k in LA puts you in the ghetto...can't imagine what it would be in SF. I'm guessing you'll end up in the burbs close to BART station.

Up to $1000?

At your max of $1000, SF will get you nothing. Have you visited SF before? It's a super densely packed city.

You'll probably end up in Richmond area in a super small bedroom with 2-3 roommates (far better than ghetto areas of Tenderloin or Castro)

It may get nicer if you are outside of SF proper. Many people live in areas like South San Fran, San Bruno, Daly City.. which are 30-40 mins south of SF. They commute to city for work by taking BART.

I lived about 3 blocks from the Glen Park BART station from 2006-2009. Glen Park is a residential area with plenty of street parking, something not true in many neighborhoods in the city. Even back then, rent was just under $1,000 a month with one roommate. I haven't followed what rents there are like now but $1,000 a month definitely means you'll have roommates and won't be anywhere near the Bay Bridge.

IMO stick to areas near BART for the easiest commute; MUNI sucks balls and takes forever to get anywhere.

Yeah, my buddy literally, and I mean LITERALLY rented a walkin closet for $1500 a month in the late 90's early 00's. I attribute some of that to the first Internet bubble but I can't imagine it has gotten cheaper. Boston is stupid expensive too. 1bd room with a kitchenette? $2300.

Sounds like your office is in a good location. I used to work just off of Market on 5th then 2nd streets. For $1k, you might be able to find a room in the Tenderloin District. If you don't mind living in the East Bay(you'll be closer to Emeryville). You might be able to find a small place in the Rockridge neighborhood in Oakland. It's young, hip and borders Berkeley. There's a BART station and you can also take the casual carpool into the city. It's also an easy drive to Emeryville. I used to live there and would take the casual carpool into SF and take the BART home.

Wow - you best up your budget to $1500 and what do you plan to do about parking?

Add in utilities, laundry, dry cleaning, internet -

I too have known people who rented walk-in closets, I know people who are using a 1bdrm as a 2bdrm, the LR becomes the 2nd bedroom in order to offset costs and get to that magic $1000/M for each person.

Good luck kid - check Craigslist and look for a room-mate!

I've seen apartments for $1000 in the Sunset or Richmond. But that's probably all you can get. Any more lively neighborhood, and I'd say $1200 min.

Sorry but if you're looking for SOMA area, you're gonna be SOL with that budget LOL.

Found a place! Haight-Ashbury area. Close friend's aunt is renting a penthouse apartment and was willing to rent her two downstairs bedrooms to me for 900/month. So 900/month, two rooms, dishwasher, laundry, fully furnished kitchen, haight-asbury area and 5 miles from where I work. I lucked out big time.

Now just have to find things to do and people to hang out with in SF, but man it feels good to have a place to live setup

LOL.

if you are wiling to pay "up to" $1000 on rent just to reduce commute time, then you are looking in the wrong city. Since you will be in Emeryville part time, just look at the East Bay for a place to live.

And why Emeryville? You working for Pixar?

Thats a major score. Heck, I would take that place in a sec for twice the price (if parking is included), and commute down to the valley. But a big part of that is the prospect of hooking up with hippy chicks.

Oh to be so young and naive ... again. OP, one day you may look back on this post and wonder what you were thinking.

A few years ago on a flight from Minneapolis to Orlando I found myself sitting in a bulkhead seat ... right across from a flight attendant's jump seat. Just before takeoff a cute Jap/American woman sat down in the jumpseat and buckled in. Over the next 3 hours we talked about a number of things ... one of which was how it was to live in SF. The girl had four (yes 4) jobs including her gig with Northwest AL. It took everything she could make to afford her half of the rent for a miniscule 2 bedroom apartment.

Good luck OP ...

Do you believe everything you are told? If so I've got a bridge to sell you ...

I have a co-worker living in the city that has rather cheap rent, and her landlord occasionally comes by to pick it up--though she's rarely around at the same time.

This means that she maybe pays rent every 3 or 4 months. And landlord doesn't care--he prefers this than having her mail it, pay in advance, or any of that.

all things are possible in this city.

Oh...and talk about believing everything you hear.

4 jobs to barely pay rent in SF? have you ever lived out here? that is absolute bullshit.

You were asking about a bridge? I can put that on layaway for you.
