Oh...and talk about believing everything you hear.

4 jobs to barely pay rent in SF? have you ever lived out here? that is absolute bullshit.

You were asking about a bridge? I can put that on layaway for you.

Oh, you got me ....

Congratulations!

TY!

This thread is apparently now about whether or not ATOT believes me. But really, I'd like some life advice from those of you who have gone through the college to professional transition. What did you wish you had/hadn't done in my position?

Blow money and have fun. Really. Do this. You're going to be in San Francisco and you can have a ton of fun. Find events, concerts, museums, and women. Cross the bridges to enjoy things outside the city. You have so much to do, see, hear, taste, and fuck within driving distance. Enjoy!

Good advice. Take it from an old fart: have lots of fun.

rent a room in houseshare, hit the bong, have a beer, ask around.

Well, if you have to ask...

But really what kind of ”fun” are you into? And, what's your budget for fun? There's a website that organizes activities for yuppies, like you, to frolic amongst each others and perchance to procreate.

Procreate? Surely you jest.

Go visit those "Vietnamese Coffee Shops" in San Jose... you can thank me later... :sneaky:

Everytime on my trip back from MicroCenter (Tustin) I always take a coffee break at one of those Coffee shops in OC before the long drive home... :whiste:

Update 5/29/12:
Below is the naive musings of a 22 year old who knows nothing about SF. However this naive 22 year old lucked out and found a good place to live in SF through a friend. Huzzah!

This thread is apparently now about whether or not ATOT believes me. But really, I'd like some life advice from those of you who have gone through the college to professional transition. What did you wish you had/hadn't done in my position?

OP 5/14/12:
I am single, 22, and managed to find an excellent (for a fresh college graduate) job in San Francisco proper. I accepted the offer two days ago and now need to find a place to live. I start work June 30th.

I know nothing of the different neighborhoods/districts of San Francisco. I basically know nothing about SF except there is a suspension bridge, hills, sourdough, and some pride parades

My job is located near the Bay bridge on market street. I want to minimize commute and am willing to spend more on rent to do so. My budget allows for up to $1000/m in rent. My job requires a car on some days, as sometimes I will need to get to Emeryville in a timely manner.

So I guess some of my many questions are:
1) What part of SF would be a good place for me to live? (young, single, car owner)

2) What areas will result in SandEagle advising me to, "move out of the ghetto"?

3) Where are good places to meet people? I'm not an Apple toting hipster and I hate coffee.

4) Other general life advice for a young guy with his first "real job" moving to the city.

Thanks guys.

1) At $1000/mo you have to rent a room. Pretty much no way to get an apartment...maybe a tiny studio but I doubt it. Most Muni bus and light rail lines run to Market St so don't limit yourself to BART. Caltrain station is not convenient to Market St so I would avoid that. Affordable neighborhood options are Potrero Hill, Mission (semi-ghetto), Glen Park, Haight (semi-ghetto), Sunset (far, bus only), Richmond (less far, bus only), Marina (expensive), Pacific Heights. Parking is hard anywhere and you are not going to get a garage spot with most rooms. Glen Park and Sunset prob have best parking of that list. Might not be as big a deal if you are not using your car often...if you drive enough you'll find spots anywhere.

2) Stay away from the Tenderloin (west of Union Square), and Bayview/Hunters Point, Balboa Park, Excelsior. Mission is weird and both nice and ghetto.

3) Marina area has a lot of singles. The grocery store there is known as Singles Safeway.

4) Save your money - going out gets expensive. SF has a reasonably priced bar scene if you avoid the expensive clubs. Giants games are fun and cheap if you plan ahead.

Why would anybody living in hippie hill rent you a 2 bedroom fully furnished place for $900 a month when they can rent it for $2500+ to somebody else? It makes absolutely no sense.

Live in Oakland and take Bart. Or split a place in the mission with a person. I never actually lived in SF when I worked in the bay area but its an interesting place. If I get an opportunity again I'd probably live there next time just because its where everything is to do in the bay area

Why do you need advice of this nature?

Just go out and live and figure shit out for yourself...that's how it works, bro.

Ah shit--I keep forgetting this generation has been raised by the internet.
