Enabling AHCI completely wrecked my o/c stability

Had my new i5 750 system up to 4400 MHz @ 1.425v stable. Backed down to 4200 @ 1.35v because of temps. Completely stable, 24/7 prime, temps mid 60s. I decide to enable AHCI so I can hot-swap my HDDs out of my Easy-SATA drive bay and KABLOOEY! BSODs like crazy. Can't even run Prime for 2 seconds - instantly crashes. What gives? Anyone else run into this issue?

Shut off AHCI and went back to IDE compatability mode and now completely stable again.

PS - I had already fixed the Windows registry to enable AHCI. Windows was loading fine.

I did that when I was W7 RC, and I was getting some random freezing issues even though I also did the registry modifications. Some seems to be just fine changing to AHCI post OS install, but I end up reinstalling my OS.

Did you install Intel Matrix Storage manager? Those are the AHCI controller drivers for intel chipsets.

Win 7, ASUS P7P55D (P55).

Just checked the Intel website. Downloaded the lastest driver. No good. Won't let me run it.

PS - I guess this does not belong in the O/C forum. I thought it did but at first but it seems like a driver issue. Sry.

I think the Intel AHCI drivers probably refuse to run because it thinks your system is still running IDE-mode. I don't really have any other recommendations I can think of atm.

However, here is another on-going thread about this topic under the storage section.

This. It's a driver issue, not anything to do regarding stability and your overclock. There is a registry hack to change from IDE to AHCI after an OS install, google it.

Did that. That's what caused all the trouble in the first place. After I did the registry hack I booted into windows with AHCI enabled and everthing went to hell.

Have you tried upping the platform voltage a tad? Considering that is where the sata controllers are, it would seem like a logical guess.

I'd just start from stock settings and try to get bac kto where you were with ACHI enabled. Hot swap is pretty boss hog.

Booting windows with AHCI enabled, but at stock speeds, will tell you what's the problem.
