Enabling DMA

My new Northwood System is running perfectly fine ..

Though my Primary IDE drives are only running in PIO Mode. I change it to DMA if available. Still no go. My Seconday IDE drives are running in Ultra DMA 2!

Was running bios 1004 but now running 1005

exactly what devices have you got on that channel??

I did a registry entry, didn't help.

Can't find IDE Drivers.

In my Device Manager, my Direct Memory Access Controller has no drivers installed.

Try uninstalling the Primary IDE controller (it's now possible in XP) and restart. When it re-installs, change the it to use DMA. My Cd-rom would only show up as PIO mode 4 and even if i changed it to use DMA. Upon uninstalling the Primary IDE controller and restarting Multi-word DMA was available. Also, make sure you have UDMA enabled for your primary ide channel in BIOS or set it to Auto.

Make sure you are using an ATA/100/133 cable and not a regular ATA/33 cable.. the regular IDE cables can force your computer to run in ATA/33. (their max transfer)

ATA/100 or newer cables usually have blue and grey ends which is suppose to identify the mobo connecter, primary, secondary etc.. (slave, master) They also have much thinner wires within the ribbon so it's very easy to identify... so make sure your IDE's are up to snuff.. that'd be my first suggestion after reading this post.

I am using the Cables that came with the motherboard.

Xboxlpu, Your ide cables should be 80 wire-40pin, as defined by the previous post, although I have had MoBo's shipped with the 40 wire-40pin cables,Plumber

Well I will check the cables sometime.

I do have other cables that was in my old PC

Anyway, I uninstalled the Primary IDE Channel and still no DMA.

I am gonna also clear my CMOS.. i think it may have to do with a Bios flash.

Fixed the problem!

Asus Bios 1004, would disbale DMA. I updated to 1005, didn't fix the problem. I Just cleared my CMOS.

Still in my Device Manager, it says PIO Mode but I Load Sandra and it says it is running Ultra DMA 5.

And plus I Know it is. Before in Quake 3 Demo, the game would stutter for a few seconds and sucked to play. Game runs smoothly now.
