here a tip. encode the source wth contant quality 25 (try to use the highest settings possible) . if you like that quality but not file size try a higher constant quality (higher number means less quality). if you don't like thw quality lower the value.
its far far better to mess with constant quality then bitrate unless size is you main concern cuiz with contant quality you know that it will look the same quality throuhout the movie AND there won't be sections that look plain crap cuz they were too complex to be encoded correctly under the setttings you specified.
al;so visit doom9 for more info .anandtech is not really the right place cuz most here aren't into this..
i'll also tell you something else. if you a noob to x264 options (like i was) get te megui+x264 pack fropm doom9 that has the profiles included. those are really helpfull.
