Encoding on an SSD

I just ordered all my parts for a new build (i7-4790K, asus maximus vii impact, 16GB corsair, and 128GB XP941).

It's overkill for most of what I do, but I encode quite a bit with Handbrake, which is why I wanted the CPU power. Anyway, I just realized I can't change the Temp directory on Handbrake, and it's not possible unless I move all the Windows Temp files to another HDD.

I plan on having a second small internal drive to move Temp files to, primarily Handbrake, IDM and Newsbin (IDM and Newsbin can be moved in the Program settings), and house a VM data file. However since I can't move Handbrakes Temp folder within the program setting, will a good deal of encoding kill the drive quickly if it's using the XP941?

I'm not sure how many writes exactly, but I thought encoding writes quite a bit during the process. Are SSDs these days equipt to handle it?

How many handbrake movies are we talking here? If you're ripping a few DVDs a week, it'll still fall well below the mark for "light" use (10GB/day.)

Even if you're doing fairly heavy encoding, I wouldn't worry about it.

I'd like to convert my entire DVD collection to mkv's, several hundred so I can get rid of them all and regain the space they are taking up. But I suppose after it's done encoding will go down to very little, so over time it should average out. Maybe I'll try encoding on a VM, see how much longer it takes, I don't think I can give a VM the full CPU resources but I'll setup a new one and try when it's built.

Thanks.

I encoded all my DVD's... probably 500 or more with Handbrake/SSD, I didn't give it a second thought. I don't think my SSD is any worse for it, I bought it to use, not last forever.

No offense, but you dumped a bunch of coin on the rest of the system.... and got a 128GB SSD? a ~250GB SSD will give you better write performance.

It's an m.2 PCIe x4 slot, only card on the market, only the 128GB was readily available, the 256GB would have had to come from RamCity in Australia. The 128GB write shouldn't be much slower than normal SSDs and the reads are double. I'll upgrade eventually, but this will get me up and running now. Since I will upgrade eventually I might as well try encoding on it and see what happens.

AH! I didn't recognize the model... my bad.

I bought a 128GB Crucial M500 and was surprised at the difference in write speeds vs my 256's.
