Encrypt / Lock a DVD+R?

Is there any software which will lock a DVDR so it can't be accessed without a password? Encrypting all the files isn't necessary, but wouldn't be totally bad either...as long as one file can be decrypted at a time.

I wouldn't trust anything to be remotely secure except for 'known good' tools like pgp or gpg.

"remotely secure" is relative. I just need enough security to stop an amateur (amateur computer user, not amateur) hacker from getting to the files. My drive isn't a plextor...

The free version of Private Disk can create an encrypted image and mount it as a drive. You can just make one 4400MB and add data to it and burn it.

Of course in 6 months when you've lost your password you'll be posting again asking for a crack

NTFS file encryption.

A) I doubt Windows will let you format a DVD-R NTFS.
B) You would need to export and carry around your account's key on seperate media

Thanks guys...truecrypt and privatedisk are exactly what I was looking for...I might go with truecrypt because it's free.

Wow truecrypt is great...amazingly fast once the partition is formatted. Although it took about 7 secs to format a 100mb partition.

I saw privatedisk light but I think truecrypt is better...a) it's more robust than private disk light and b) since it's open source and not some company's 'free project' it will get more updates.

Yeah, there is PGP Desktop but that ain't free and has more schtuff you prolly don't need.

I had not heard of TrueCrypt before and it looks really good.

Ah, I missed the part about it being a DVD-R. The simplest solution in that case would be to zip all of the files into one archive and password protect it.

TrueCrypt is what I need. Actually with truecrypt I don't even need to store it on a DVD except for backup. But TrueCrypt will allow you to mount an encrypted image that has been burned to DVD in WinXP...I think it said the only problematic OS is win2k. You can read up on the docs.

You can zip the files into an archive but the filenames still aren't encrypted and it's slow.

I have through the documentation and truecrypt is really amazing.

The win2k limitation is that NTFS cannot be used on ROM discs (requires write access). I discovered that with PGPdisk but I don't know if it is actually win2k itself or more specificially its version of NTFS at fault (win2k has 3.0, XP has 3.1). So you use FAT32 instead. I have messed about a bit with TrueCrypt and am considering using it instead of PGPdisk. The Traveller feature is nice ... being able to run on any machine sans installation (even from the same disc the encrypted data is on). PGP Desktop can make SDA's (Self Decrypting Archive) though. I have not tested XP NTFS on a ROM disc yet but, unlike PGP 8, it does work on RAM discs (don't know about PGP 9). TC is missing convenient tray access (although the third-party SecureTrayUtil is available); and a container file cannot be set to use a particular drive letter (has to be chosen every time or opened via a custom batch file); and it does not offer folder mounting which is particularly convenient for email databases and such.

And then change the file's extension to .rar or hide the contents using Camouflage (when you open a camouflaged file, it opens a .jpeg file instead).

It wouldn't take more than a minute to realize that it was just a renamed file. As for Camouflage, I wouldn't be willing to trust it without some extensive testing and I can't do that since you didn't post a URL for it.

I wouldn't trust Camouflage either

Here is a place to download a comouflage program, but it is fairly old and I can't find a newer link. The manufacturer's website doesn't work any more either

EDIT: Here is another link to camouflage, it is no longer being developed or supported it seems
