Can someone give me some recs for a cheap but energy efficient laptop?

Larger screen would be a plus.

I don't plan on doing anything demanding with it. (Just internet web searches and email. No gaming)

Right now I am considering this $379 model at Fry's, but if something else would give me better battery time for less money I'd like to hear about it.

Thank you very much.

For under $400, the only thing that's going to give you good battery life is a netbook and possibly a CULV laptop, if you can find one that cheap.

Look at the Acer Timeline series. You might be able to find on around $400 with a single core SU4100 (I think that's the model). Make sure to get a larger battery, if they offer options (3 cell, 6 cell, etc.)

I am a big fan of these new M-series processors from AMD. K10.5 architecture like the Phenom II. No longer based on the K8 which we've had for many years now.

You should get around 4 hours of battery life with this, I think, if you go to Power Settings and put it on Power Saver, and also undervolt a bit. It's very easy with K10Stat, and these new M-series processors undervolt quite well.

Energy efficient and larger screen are somewhat of an oxymoron. An efficient notebook will get 6+ hours of battery life. It will have a LED screen and a SSD, and no more than a 14-in screen.

under 400$ your choices are extremely limited.
netbooks and some CULV models.
if you want a larget screen and weight and battery life is secondary, go CULV. if you want all of the above then you need to be ready to pay 1000$ for an i7 CULV (the i5 CULVs have been delayed)

My choice with those parameters would be one of the Acer Timeline or Asus UL series notebooks. They use CULV chips and are available with various screen sizes.

tigerdirect has, from time to time, acer/asus (can't remember which) refurb 14" laptops with su3500, decent enough with hardware acceleration for most flash (excluding hulu), for $400. even cheaper with bing cashback
