What does that have to do with it? The algorithms are all that matter.

The sponsorship opportunities are hilarious too:

Siri dives hard to the inside of Cortana but Google Now missed a braking point and smashes into Siri. Siri drops from pole to 7th but has plenty of race to make up time. Google Now receives a drive through penalty for the racing incident.

identical cars, identical computers. makes it less interesting. If it were competition between different companies that might be interesting. Who cares about "algorithms"? Is this for software engineers or regular people to watch?

Physical Capabilities need to be different. This is just an ad for nvidia's hardware, not entertainment. They might as well do a 4 minute video summarizing the whole thing and say "powered by nvidia" at the end.

The team will TEACH the car and the best teacher wins. That is the purpose of this race, to teach the car and then the car will race alone.

What? It is about AI. And AI is all about software. Sure you could use AMD CPUs and AMD GPUs but then you would finish in the last position...

I think you're overestimating how much of a difference computing hardware makes and how little difference the software itself makes. Putting it in easier terms, a computer with a nvidia graphics card can run Civ V and Grand Theft Auto, are those two things too similar for you?

They were doing the racing season prior to nvidia becoming a partner, it was announced over a year ago. They will allow teams to adjust physical hardware like electric motors, batteries, and other stuff in the second season - this is the same way Formula E launched. The first year was essentially spec, the second year teams brought their own powertrains.

I'm talking about what would make it more interesting for viewers. If you take out the driver all that's left for racing fans is the hardware and that's all the same. cheering for software is going to be a bit less interesting

This is a spec series, not much to write about. Is it a feat that you are the sole supplier of tires, because there is only one supplier? Same deal with tires, oil, and gas, or batts...

The prototype mockup does look freaking cool though. It just needs a drivers seat now lol.

This is a spec series....

Exactly, I don't think some people know what a spec series is... Everything is the same vehicle-wise, which puts driver's skill as number one priority (in this case, driver's skill = software). Spec series may not be for everyone, but it does make for some great racing.

I think they should have at least one vehicle with a human driver, just as a comparison to see how much better/worse the AI is. I don't see that happening with these vehicles, though.

Now now, don't sell NV short. They do have CPUs so they'd be able to compete, they just wouldn't be able to stack up to AMD or even Intel.

Umm, there's a natural fanbase already, just look at the people who already cheer their company on like a sports team.

I think its amazing. I think its an honor to observe the ancestors of our future friends at work. You may have to one day answer to someone when they ask you, "Why did you have so much hatred for my ancestors and why should I deny you the same attitude?" You should watch your attitudes and think twice before you disrespect these cars or any current automated technology. You are literally insulting what some may consider their grand father.

Coolish. I suspect it could be one of the oddest races one could see. Some cars could act erratically, some drive slow, others fast, and possibly some regularly hitting other cars.

Might be interesting to watch, might be boring, might be disturbing. Only one way to find out.

This is a great platform to show how differently a computer can drive a car.
I hope that each wheel has it's own engine and turning, should allow some fantastic things when computer can control them independently etc.

I would expect them to be faster than humans quite soon.

The concept is interesting enough that I'd definitely watch one or two races to see how it plays out. What would be an absolute deal killer for me would be if they used that god-awful fake drama that seems to infest every "reality" tv show these days.

If they play it straight and present it like any other race, with good on track analysis of how the different team's approaches are playing out, without ginned up drama, it could definitely be entertaining.

what you mean teach? its not like they have an endless pool of settings to pull the track is a confined place that you need an optimal grip with the optimal gas setting and nothing more plus some cameras around for the cars not go all projects cars on the brakes and become a massive pile of carbon fiber

also there is a very good reason as to why they choose tracks with almost non existense height variation

To be fair so is F1, and that is pretty damn popular.
formula E is much closer to that than f1...if you had an f1 with no driver no one would gonna watch it there is no fun no one to admire who will you admire on a driverless car? who is gonna get the prize?

Exactly!

plus, how will they program in risk taking, or knowing the exact timing to dart to the inside line for a pass.

I am typically not a huge fan of one class spec racing, such as nascar. This is basically that, but with no drivers :/

Maybe now that Crashtor lost his F1 seat, he'll get a chance to race against the robots.

My point is that you could to a large degree take all the drivers in F1 and randomly distribute amongst the teams, and the same cars would win as before.

In other words the car makes a much bigger difference in who wins in F1 than the driver does, thus it is largely a technological show off. Even if FIA would like you to think otherwise.
