Is $3500 cheap?
Uhh...no dude. I spent $1k on my fiancee's engagement ring, and that was the perfect amount.
Remember, she's not marrying you for the size of the ring or how much you spend, she's marrying you for the person you are.
If she is marrying you because of the size of the ring or how much you are willing to dish out on a ring, I would have some second thoughts before proposing to her.
You forgot peer pressure, I'd rather to have my wife wear the nicest engagement ring among her friends than to hear her bugging me for a better one for the rest of my wife.

Why not buy a "gently used" ring? she will not know, and you will be able to get a bigger, better diamond that way. Diamonds do not wear out, so why not buy one like that?
Check around on craigslist, ebay or even the FS forums here. Other than that, bluenile.com has great prices on lose diamonds and settings.

lol if all you people never bought products from businesses who exploited people/children/whatever you would have no cloths/food/shelter/technology/etc. Don?t give the blood diamond BS, just say you?re too cheap to buy a diamond.

You monthly pre-tax salary x 3 should be about right.
Unless you work in fast food, thats a bit on the low side.

Don't give us the "too cheap" BS. Just admit you've swallowed the DeBeers marketing campaign hook line and sinker. A real woman isn't going to expect someone to drop a small fortune on a flashy piece of carbon. If they do, then you can be reasonably sure that they'll have no problem taking everything else you own either (as most men find out sooner or later).

lol?
i'm not cheap and i'm not naive-- i know there are lots of industries in the world that exploit people. but I certainly don't laugh at their expense and i can't ignore it once i know about it.
if we're laughing out loud, let's laugh at ourselves: it's a rock that sparkles.
that's what all the fuss is about. it doesn't feed us or clothe us or keep us warm at night. and it certainly isn't a good indication of love or how long a marriage will last.
and god forbid your wife have a smaller sparkle rock than her friends, then you'll hear about.
it feels so arbitrary and pointless to me.
i'm not trying to make you feel bad, OP. i just found rdubbz420 particularly insensitive.
