Find a local designer!!

It takes a few weeks but is well worth it.

My wifes anniversary ring for this year came out spectacular and costs less than any "prefab" ring I found.

My sister (12 years) ago had her engagment ring designed locally as well and it sure as hell looks better than anything else available "staright up".

Uhh...no dude. I spent $1k on my fiancee's engagement ring, and that was the perfect amount.

Remember, she's not marrying you for the size of the ring or how much you spend, she's marrying you for the person you are.

If she is marrying you because of the size of the ring or how much you are willing to dish out on a ring, I would have some second thoughts before proposing to her.

You forgot peer pressure, I'd rather to have my wife wear the nicest engagement ring among her friends than to hear her bugging me for a better one for the rest of my wife.

What'd she get you, a nice studded collar?

I can just hear the whip cracking right now.

You'll get the best deal if you find a used ring from a private seller. Diamond rings depreciate like crazy (usually upwards of 40%), so let someone else take the loss.

Just make sure you and the seller have the ring appraised at a REPUTABLE jeweler (GIA or AGS certified) before you plunk down your cash. You want to make sure the diamonds you are buying have the expected size, cut, color and clarity.

Check around on craigslist, ebay or even the FS forums here. Other than that, bluenile.com has great prices on lose diamonds and settings.

I agree, my fiance got my wedding set at a pawn shop. It doesn't matter where it came from, as long as she will like it. I love mine!

Don't give us the "too cheap" BS. Just admit you've swallowed the DeBeers marketing campaign hook line and sinker. A real woman isn't going to expect someone to drop a small fortune on a flashy piece of carbon. If they do, then you can be reasonably sure that they'll have no problem taking everything else you own either (as most men find out sooner or later).

I spent $2K on a good quality 1/2 carat diamond at bluenile.com and she loves it. Just find a girl with small fingers and you can save a lot of money

There is no point. I just wouldn't recommend to anyone that they spend that. I could have gotten a ring just as nice for 1/4 of that. Your best bet would be to ask around locally to family or friends to see who they would recommend and TRUST. You don't need a shady jeweler trying to pull a fast on one you.

i'm not cheap and i'm not naive-- i know there are lots of industries in the world that exploit people. but I certainly don't laugh at their expense and i can't ignore it once i know about it.

if we're laughing out loud, let's laugh at ourselves: it's a rock that sparkles.
that's what all the fuss is about. it doesn't feed us or clothe us or keep us warm at night. and it certainly isn't a good indication of love or how long a marriage will last.
and god forbid your wife have a smaller sparkle rock than her friends, then you'll hear about.

it feels so arbitrary and pointless to me.

i'm not trying to make you feel bad, OP. i just found rdubbz420 particularly insensitive.

You monthly pre-tax salary x 3 should be about right.
Unless you work in fast food, thats a bit on the low side.

You gotta be fvcking kidding, right?
No fvcking way I'm spending $15K on a friggin ring, I don't care who it's for...
BTW, taking into consideration that I have to use after-tax income to buy things, that comes to 4.25 months of after-tax pay. Fvck that.

Are you around a Bailey, Banks and Biddle? They run the gamut (inexpensive to expensive) and you can usually find something very nice on sale. I bought a $6K ring for $$2500. It's worth a try. Good luck!

Right now, I make $2300 a month after taxes, insurance, 401k and all that BS. I think $3000-3500 is about right.

Don't you?

I didn't buy into any marketing crap, I was married for 10 years before I bought my wife a modest 3/4 ring that she didn't ask for.

I'm in the same boat right now. I've been looking at bluenile.com and found a couple I like. I like the idea of no sales tax. That right there saves some $$.

Its whatever you are comfortable with, if you think 35 is your comfort level, don't let other people bother your decision.
Then again, take a look around you circle of friends, get your wife something thats comparable is recommended.

The amount spent is entirely up to you, I think that the three months salary stuff is all out of line.

And your budget is reasonable. I sold someone a 1.01 stone for $2500 last month, he's having a custom setting built for it and will be into the project for less than $3500 and it will look damn good.

BTW - I sent you a private message. Top left hand corner of the screen.

I recently bought a ring from Bluenile. I went with one of their signature ideal cut diamonds and I'm glad I did. I spent quite a bit of time looking at local jewelers in my area (smaller, mom and pop type places - retail chain stores are worthless, only good for a laugh). I was a bit wary about buying something I couldn't see, but their return policy is there if you need it - grab one and then compare to what you've seen in the stores. It was far and away the best diamond I found, the way it sparkles is simply amazing.

Good Luck
