I am about to pop the question and want to get a fantastic ring. We have looked at places like Jareds, Helzberg and what not and have found a lot of nice items. However, I only have arounr $3500 to spend on it.

Where do you guys suggest I get a ring and diamond at?

Suggestions? Concerns? Yes I am still going to do it regardless of what is said here.

Mine is being made right now. I found the jewler on diamondring.com. Of course, my ring has no diamonds in it, so it won't be as much of a waste of money.

Why not buy a "gently used" ring? she will not know, and you will be able to get a bigger, better diamond that way. Diamonds do not wear out, so why not buy one like that?
Check around on craigslist, ebay or even the FS forums here. Other than that, bluenile.com has great prices on lose diamonds and settings.

Best jewelry shopping experiences I've had have been at Shane Co. I regret that I let my wife and her mother pick where we'd shop for her wedding ring.

LOL. I emptied my bank account when I got engaged. Still in college with no job yet and had a whole $400. It's still my wife's favorite ring.

In all serious notions, please don't try to be funny here. This is stressing me out lately, but I want to get something great for my money.

if you're set on a diamond, then definately look online.. there's some good prices and lots of information..

my fiance decided she didn't want a "blood diamond" so we went the moissanite route.. works for me!

oh, and we bought it at helzberg...

It really depends how much you are comfortable to spend on it, its not really the price tag that matters.
Then again, 1 carat should be a good starting point and try to get something with a nice color d-f range, and a somewhat decent clarity.

I am usually a cheap person on other things, but I decided to go all in on the engagement ring, 3500 does seem low but if you can't afford more, keep in mind that quality > size.

yeah, seeing the movie Blood Diamond really made me think twice about getting a diamond ring. in case she needs convincing:

10 Reasons Not To Accept A Diamong Ring

it seems to me that a really nice platinum ring could be just as nice, and even more practical (no need to worry about getting mugged, etc) but I wish you well on your search, no matter what you choose.

Uhh...no dude. I spent $1k on my fiancee's engagement ring, and that was the perfect amount.

Remember, she's not marrying you for the size of the ring or how much you spend, she's marrying you for the person you are.

If she is marrying you because of the size of the ring or how much you are willing to dish out on a ring, I would have some second thoughts before proposing to her.

I suggest going to BlueNile.com. They also have 10% coupons from time to time. This store was Forbe.com's pick for getting jewelry online. $3500 is definitely not bad. My brother and another friend got their's for around $2500+. Although, someone mentioned that the rule of thumb is twice your monthly salary. In that case, my diamond ring will only cost $50... joking ...

lol if all you people never bought products from businesses who exploited people/children/whatever you would have no cloths/food/shelter/technology/etc. Don?t give the blood diamond BS, just say you?re too cheap to buy a diamond.

estate sales, maybe bankruptcy sales (not sure how your state's exemptions work, so maybe or maybe not), antiques dealers. a diamond broker as a last resort.

You forgot peer pressure, I'd rather to have my wife wear the nicest engagement ring among her friends than to hear her bugging me for a better one for the rest of my wife.
