I then went to Walmart and bought the cheapest CZ I could find. I think it was about $19.86 after tax. I proposed to my wife with the Wally-world ring and she was estatic.

Since she passed the 'I better get a big rock' test I gave her the real ring.

That's a pretty good idea.

That is a good idea! I am going to have to squirrel that idea away for the future.

How is it a good idea to not have any idea if your g/f really loves you before you ask her to marry you?

Maybe a better idea is to figure it out slowly over time, then get engaged when you're sure and don't have to test her.

As another poster below this referenced, I think it would be a somewhat funny thing. The girl I have been dating for a while now wants a Tiffany ring (she is not yuppie or spoiled, but that is just one of her 'dreams' in getting a Tiffany which I am cool with) however because she would like to have a Tiffany ring I think it would be great to propose with a cheap Wally-World CZ ring then pull out the Tiffany after that. She has a sense of humor so I think it would go over well, but I imagine some people would get pissed.

But it should be 1-ct, should be H color or better, and should be SI1 or better (SI only eye clean...do not want to see ANYTHING with the naked eye).

The diamond does NOT need to be one carat or larger. I bought my fiancee a .51 carat princess cut , VS2 clarity, F color, excellent polish, VG symmetry. The Depth and Table proportions, while not terrible, could have been better, but the diamond still sparkles very nicely nonetheless. I set it on a cathedral style 18K white gold solitaire band. From Mondera.com, the whole setup cost me about $1400 or so.

She would not have wanted anything larger. She tells everyone that to this day. Particularly with the way it's high mounted, a larger diamond would really be kinda gaudy. With her fairly small hands/fingers, the .51 carat size is absolutely perfect. You DO NOT need to buy 1 carat minimum. But do make sure the setting compliments the diamond. If the ring or setting overwhelms the diamond, it's going to look too small.

IMO, expensive diamond rings are a waste of money.

Who the hell made it a standard to give your wife to be a 5K+ diamond ring and why should I follow this standard?

If someone really loves you, you don't need to spend a fortune.
