I had heard the two months' salary thing, and was willing and able to spend that much, but in the end I just bought the one that my wife wanted. It was $1.2K, IIRC.

Rent Blood Diamond and watch it together. Then propose and go pick out an engagement ring with her.

She'll hum and haw then walk away with nothing in hand and you can buy $5000 of toys

My budget is going to be $3K MAX when I start looking for my girls ring which is going to be pretty soon.

On this topic if there are any girls responding to this thread ... do you think it would be corny/bad idea to propose on my girls birthday? I had planned on doing it either on our vacation to cancun next month (July 18th - 25th) OR doing it right before. her birthday is on July 12th.

For the chicks out there, do you think that would be a good or bad idea and why?

Ok, just my thoughts:

I would be expecting something on my birthday and i would not like that. I would suggest doing it on vacation. Just because it will make the whole holiday more memorable. You could do soooo much to really surprise her.
Like, a few weeks before, you could joke around and ask her things like "her name, will you do me the honor of... passing me the butter"... do that a few times when she will start to get annoyed.
Then, when you plan that nice picnic dinner on the beach in cancun, really ask her, "will you do me the honor of marrying me". She will be surpised and excited.

Even if you don't want to do the asking thing ahead of time, i suggest doing it on vacation.

My wife was always thrifty and would have kicked my ass if I spent too much on a ring. She isn't big on jewelry either.

$600 .5ct Solitaire engagement ring
$350 nice Amethyst wrap wedding band

I done good She always gets lots of compliments on it.

Sorta like THIS, but with the Amethyst asymetrical with a few tiny diamonds.

Why would it make you angry if it was a joke? I would like to hear what, in particular, is offensive about it.

My question and survey is this:

How much did you spend on an engagement ring?

How many crts was the diamond?

What do you think I can get for $5k?

1) I spent enough so my now-wife is very happy with her ring. The key was figuring out what she really wanted.

2) The main stone is a sapphire, not a diamond. There are several small diamonds as well, taken from jewelry that was in my family.

3) No freakin' idea what you can get.

I know a guy that paid over $18k for a tiffany engagement ring. Best part? He's going to spend close to that AGAIN on a wedding ring. He probably makes something like $40k a year. What a tool.

you folks realize there's such a huge markup on diamonds it's not even funny.. if you must try to find a friend or friend of a friend who can give you a nice offer, slight markup over wholesale price, which is 100s of % less than you will pay retail for the same thing.

Yes, some of us actually know this.

I'm picking up on your subtle implication of veracity, so I asked her again. It's 1.5tcw, and the re are some sizable diamonds on the band. This is what we used to inspire the design. The center round is probably more like ~1.25ct or so. I'll have to check.

[edit]Oh, got it from a jeweler in Atlanta. We used the design in the image for inspiration and had the jeweler source the diamond.[/edit]

My friends dad owns this store.

Boone and Sons

They have 3 stores now and my friend runs one of them. He's the one I'm going to go to shortly when I actively start looking. He already told me he'd give me a good deal.

If I ever get engaged, I'm going to get a sapphire, or some other stone that's less boring than a diamond and doesn't carry all the baggage (well, as MUCH of the baggage).

Plus, I've already broken four diamonds at my workplace, so I no longer think of them as mythical forever-stones. The bloody things are entirely too brittle, and they cost WAAAY too much for a simple carbon matrix. IMHO diamonds should be purely industrial, their physical properties are much more interesting than their properties as gemstones.

I'll point the g/f to your post when I try to convince her of this.
